My step-mother works in the school system and one of the Mother's of one of her students is in a disparate situation:

She is a single mother and her son, 12 years of age are homeless, have no money for food no phone and out of work.

Does anyone know of any groups or organizations to help her?

As a mother it is devastating just the thought of that situation!

What can I do next?

Check into the organization Women in Distress. They should be able to help or provide information. I believe they are in Broward County but I am not exactly sure where they are located. You may be able to find them on google or in the phone book.
Best of luck.

I'm not sure where you or she are located.
In Miami Dade County, anyone can pick up a phone and dial
211 for FREE information/help with everything related to
Social Services...this is for everything related to free legal services, food stamps, homeless shelters, domestic violence, community outreach programs, summer camps, food banks, etc etc

what a horrible situation to be in. my heart goes out to her. I wish I could send you to a specific place, but I do know that there are shelters and food banks in Miami dade and Broward where she can get food no questions asked. You can google or try any phone book, there are listing to several resources. best of luck.

Hi L., I wish I could afford to help her, but I am struggling myself.

But I have given to an organization for probably more than 15 years called the Miami Rescue Mission. I give them $20 monthly and I have visted their facilites (probably 8-10 yearso ago) and they have a facility for women with children. I know space is limited, but you could try.

They truly care, and can provide an environment to help her get back on her feet. They have programs to help people who want to be helped.

I wish I could do more, but I can only recommend this. I honestly don't think the State of Florida will do much, but you could try. Unfortunately, I don't have faith in our systems.

Here is a link directly to the women's center:

Wish her luck.

Providence Place in Oakland Park is a homeless shelter for women and children only, operated by Catholic Charities and the archdiocese. It's an excellent place.
