I would like to make a donation of gently used toys, a few children's books, and clothing to an organization that will accept them on behalf of families in need. I do not want to donate it to salvation army or any other organization that will tag it for resale. Does anyone know of such a place in the Chicago area or very near suburb? Thanks for your help!

What can I do next?

I would suggest you can look into donating it to a church. Some churches have a missionary ministry (such as mine) in which they yearly go to country's such as Mexico, Haiti, Domincan Republic, India, etc..and they take things to give to people that are less fortunate. If interested, my church, New Vision Community Church located on 21st & Rockwell in Chicago, does frequent missionary trips. We have an orphanage located in Laredo in which our pastor frequently sends things to. If not interested, as I said before, many other churches have ministries such as these & it would be a good place to make a donation.

S.,
You should consider donating them to a Children's Hospital. They are always happy to receive donations and they make such a difference for sick children! You can try the Children's wing at Lutheran General or Children's Memorial downtown.

I understand if you are looking to give them to an organization which is large and active, but if you are into giving it away privately I would love to see what you have. We are struggling financially and I always am looking for used or donated toys and young children's stuff for our daughter (2 yrs old). If interested I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you for being so sonsiderate whether you choose this option or simply go with another organization. It is very kind of you to be generous with your used stuff.

There is a place in Oak Park called the Economy Shop www.economyshop.org. This is a resale shop, but all the procedes go to local organizations and orphanages. Otherwise I would contact your local church. My mom's church had a girl who was 18 and pregnant when I was pregnant...anything that my daughter out grew or I didnt want or end up using, I donated it to the church and they gave it to her. They also use the basement of the church once a month for PADS. The provide shelter and food for homeless there that night. I have donated blankets, bottles etc there for any homeless parents to use while there. And some churches have nurserys for the parents to bring their kids to while they attend service...they are always looking for extra supplies. Hope this helps!
