Silly Question for Stylistas: Denim Shorts for Boys Tacky or Still Trendy?

I'm buying some spring clothes for my little guy and for some reason I feel like jean shorts are so 1990's. Yet, I think they'd be a cute convenient style choice...but are they tacky?

Honestly, I know it doesn't matter. Clothes don't make the toddler. This is just a curiosity thing. They still sell them but they usually aren't the models on the websites. It's all khaki and plaids!

What can I do next?

omg , it's just clothes and it's a toddler , no wonder why kids are getting complexes at young ages about body image.
He's a toddler he's going to get them full of dirt and likely other gooey things. So worrying about fashion is prob not necessary. no one is going to come up to you or him and say " gah those denim shorts are SO last year!"

I think a denim is ok with a tee for boys...I will say that I have noticed the plaid out and about!!! I LOVE the plaid...then again, I have a girl. BUT, she has a couple of pair of denim and I dont think its TOO outdated, as you say.
Dont listen to the negative nellys....I COMPLETELY understand that its just a fun question to be answered with humor and wit..

Good Luck!!!

So funny! I was just looking online for my son (3) also and saw denim shorts. I think they are WAY out of fashion, for boys/men of all ages. My husband is totally against the plaid, but I think they are cute.

For our little guy, its basketball shorts to daycare and khaki's to birthday parties and BBQs, he loves wearing shorts.

I think they are fine on kids 6 and under. Older than that, and they start to look tacky.

What??? You all are crazy, Im sorry, but I LOVE clothes and my son looks super handsome in his jean cargo shorts! As long as they arent 1990's style shorts, Im confused why jean shorts wouldnt be ok.
And Jessica, its ok to want your babies to look nice. Disreguard peoples ridiculous comments.

I think if you get the right style they are still cute. No rolled up cuffs and no cut off unless they are old and just for play. the best way to to know is to get them from a stylish store. Old Navy, Children's Place, Gymboree, and even Target would carry stylish ones. the new Carpenter jean with the lower pocket on the outside thigh is really cute! They hit right above the knee, not too much above and not below...just hitting the top of his knees. :o)

It's still "fashionable" to put your kid in the ol' stand-bys.. bottom line with marketing is that there has to be a new "fresh" trend to sell. People have an odd need to feel cool and look like they paid to belong.... Companies bank on these trends (obviously).

I'd put my son (and I do put my daughters) in denim shorts.

enjoy-

It depends what it is. Plain denim probably not the trendiest. But I know southpole and brands like that that are not "gangster" have designs on them and look really cute. There are some brands that have darker denim shorts with koi fish and "tattoo" type design like Ed Hardy without the Ed Hardy price. I always go with a darker denim, I feel like light denim looks tacky and old.

We love jean shorts in this house because, like another person said, they go with any top my kiddos have.

My sons wear jean shorts, and I think they're really cute! Plus they match any top, which is convenient.

My husband won't wear jean shorts, but I don't believe men and boys have the same style standards, either. Do whatever you think looks good!

Jean shorts are a classic, I've been wearing them since the '60's. And really does it matter all that much?

What's going to hold up best to mud, sand, grass stains, the occasional bloody knee, the washing, the stain removers, etc?
Denim.
Denim as a fabric has been around for several hundred years.
It'll be around for at least several hundred more years because it is just so versatile, durable, washable and it has stood the test of time.
Don't get caught up in the convolutions of fashion, because you can dress up fashion all you want but it's still the rag business.

I think it is fine to put boys in jean shorts. I get the pairs that the style/cut is like a plaid shorts, loose around there thigh, has a pocket, and has a zipper/look of a zipper. I love to put the jean shorts on my sons when they are going to be outside most of the day because they are less likely to get a hole in them and I have to throw them out. The khaki ones always get dirty and sometimes stain. The plaid one have a lighterweight material and tend to tear.

My boys wear denim cargo shorts and khaki cargo shorts. Those are the only types I buy. I like how they look on them and they like wearing them. My youngest son has a pair of plaid shorts he likes too that a friend gave him. Honestly, I don't really pay much attention to fads since things change so quickly. I just don't have the time nor the money to keep up with them. A lot of our clothing is bought second hand at thrift stores since I just don't see the point of paying $10+ for something that MIGHT last a couple of months. My kids are hard on their clothes! If it's something for nice, such as holiday clothes or Church clothes, I am more apt to buy it new but not necessarily.

None of my kids really worry about "what's in style", etc. and my oldest is 9. If anything, they have a healthier self esteem because of that since they're not worrying what other people think. They're all clean and presentable with no stains or holes and that's all that really matters. My youngest son especially is great because 1/3 of his wardrobe is purple (all shirts and none of them are plain; one even has butterflies on it!) and he'll even wear a kilt. Even my daughter's don't worry. They like their bling, certainly but their clothing is a lot more demure than a lot of their friends. I don't buy anything with visible logos or licensed characters on them, nothing with double entendres, etc. Most little girls clothing is very inappropriate so be thankful you have a little boy to worry about! LOL

Just buy clothes you think your little guy will look cute in! Don't worry about what other people think; especially complete strangers. I'm not sure not seeing them on the models really matter; they're just pushing you to buy what THEY want you to buy, not necessarily what YOU need or even really like/want.

Like you said, clothes don't make the toddler. I firmly believe that the person makes the clothes. I have a friend who wears NOTHING but vintage clothes she finds at thrift stores and even complete strangers are always stopping her on the street and asking her what store is selling it. They're always completely flummoxed when told it's an article of clothing that's probably older than they are! (Mind, it's not that way for me.)

For the last 5 years my husband has informed me that I was not allowed to buy denim shorts for our boys. Okay for girls....just not for boys. I would stick to plaids, khakis, and mesh shorts for boys.

Tell your husband that while "jorts" are most definitely a HUGE faux-pas for men and older boys on little boys they are fine.

Well if you are buying them on ebay and it is a lot from the 70's well then yes, they would be tacky. But you see what the styles are and if they are today's style then go for it.

denim is always fashionable ... as well as practical. My almost 18 year old son still wears the long, board short style, denim shorts and loves them.
