Should I Take My Daughter to the Dentist After a Fall Today?

My daughter (11 months on Monday) fell down today. She was holding a plastic bowl and busted her mouth on it. Her lip is swollen, but I think the blood was coming from her gums around her front top tooth. I couldn't even see the tooth because there was so much blood and was afraid she knocked it out our pushed it up into her gums. After the bleeding stopped and I got a good look, I saw that the tooth was in fact still there but it is red/purple all around the gums. The tooth is not loose. I'm wondering if I should take her to a pediatric dentist and get it checked out? She doesn't seem to be in pain now ...what do guys think? If I should take her to a dentist, do you have any recommendations in the Denton/Corinth area?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Her tooth is fine. Thank goodness. I didn't take her to the dentist but my husband spoke to his dentist who basically said there isn't much you can do about it if the tooth is damaged. If it turns color over time they can whiten it, if it hurts they can pull it, if it falls out they can put in a spacer. Luckily her tooth looks fine and she's ok. And after the swelling went down and I could get a good look, it was her gum above the tooth that was cut on the bowl. I'm sure this is the first of many "boo boo's" now that she is walking! Thanks to all of you for your advice. Oh and I made an appointment with Dr. Keiser for myself since I needed to find a dentist in this area. Loved my old one but he's in Carrollton.

Hi H..

My neighbor's son actually had something similar happen to him recently. Their ped. dentist told them they wouldn't be able to tell if the tooth had been damaged for 6-8 months. Basically, there is nothing you can do at this point. Just watch to see if it turns grey. If that happens, you should go and the dentist may want to remove the tooth. I would wait it out though after what I've heard the dentist tell my neighbor. At this point, there isn't much to do but wait. Good luck!

I would definitely take her. The same thing happened to my son when he was two and, thankfully, his tooth was fine. But if something would've been wrong, we would have known and been able to treat it. It's true that some things don't have a solution other than time, but at least you will know what's wrong and what to expect in the future. It's worth the trip for peace of mind.

It wouldn't hurt to do so. The doctors today have ways to help in the preventative care of baby teeth and gums. It is probaly going to be okay. I usually lean on the side of checking things out, though.

Hi H.,

this happened to us, except my daughter was 4yrs and climbing up the wrong way on a slide. We waited about 4 weeks before we took her to the dentist and the Dr said the root was dead, she treated the tooth with something, because it was turning grey and I didn't want her to have a grey front tooth in pictures. Dr said if the tooth doesn't fall out when it is supposed to (5-6yrs?) that she would have to have it pulled as not to disturb the adult tooth's position when it is trying to come in.

We visited Dr. Unsil Keiser. Her office is at 1199 Bent Oaks Ct,Denton, TX. I was referred myself from another mommy friend and we were very happy with her treatment. The staff was great with her!
