Should I File an Income Tax Return?

I haven't filed a return since I've been single and on SS disability. I met with a CPA and was told it wasn't necessary to file since the only income I have is non-taxable. I receive Child Support and Social Security Disability. Also the amount of money I earn isn't high enough to warrant a return. Well, it's been several years since then and I've begun to wonder if it could be to my benefit to file. It seems odd that I would be eligible for any type of a refund, since I'm my income isn't taxable, but perhaps I would qualify for one. Does anyone have any ideas? As far as deductions, I would be able to claim my two children and I have some child care expenses to deduct. Also depending upon insurance/medications..I might be able to deduct some there. Please let me know if I need to be filing AND if filing might yield a refund of some sort.
Thanks!

At the very least you may be eligible for the Michigan State Homestead Property Tax Refund; if you rent or are in a mobile home park, you may still be eligible. You should be able to download the form from michigan.gov, fill in the blanks, and see for yourself if you are eligible. You may be able to go back two years, plus the current year (2007) if you have not claimed this in the past. Best wishes.

Hi M.,

I'm a tax preparer working on my Master's Degree in Accounting. The best rule of thumb is if you made ANY taxable income and you paid in ANY income taxes, you should file a return. At worst you'd get the amount of taxes back that were withheld. At best you would qualify for the EITC (Earned Income Tax Credit) for both Federal and Michigan, and you could get a bit back. At the very least, it's best to file if you aren't sure, that way the IRS won't wonder ... LOL. I hope this helps.

Yes, only because of President Bush's economic stimulus payment of $300 to $1200, and maybe a property tax credit or renters credit for the State of MI. If you want call Accurate Tax and Financial Services @ ###-###-####, or www.accuratetaxandfinancial.com, they can prepare your return for under $98 if you are getting the State of MI credits and less, say $46 if you are just filing for the economic stimulus amount. Also the return can be possibly prepared over the phone and mailed to you if you cannot make it in easily. In certain areas pick up and delivery is free.

M.,

We just completed our taxes. We made about $10,000 less last year than we had the year before and we are getting more back in taxes this year than last!

I think it won't hurt anything if you choose to file taxes. Worse-case, you will break even. Highly doubt you would owe anything, and you may qualify for some return due to your deductions.

I did not work after June last year, and did not qualify for unemployment. We did receive food stamps and we claim my stepson, as he lives with us.

Hope this helps!
