What about a humidifier? It is so dry out here we run one\
on both my kids room. It has a constant noise/low buzz and
it puts moister in the air which may be good for his skin too.
My 8-month old son is used to sleeping with a fan in his room -- helps mask noises and really seems to help him sleep more soundly. Trouble is, lately, he's having severe dry skin/eczema problems so it would be best to not have a constant breeze in his room. I thought a white noise maker with nature sounds would be a good substitute. Conair seems to be a bit too cheaply made, but others seem to jump up to $50 or more. Advice on what you have found would be helpful... thanks!

My 22 month old when he was an infant received a sound machine as a gift and it is from Sharper Image. We also were running the fan for him and as the weather was getting colder I wanted something else that made noise and here arrived this gift, it was perfect timing! I'm not sure how much it cost but it is about the size of a salad plate and it plays several different sounds like white noise, vacuum, ocean waves, etc., as well as lullabies. It is the perfect size and also good to take if we travel so I would highly recommend it. We still use it to this day for his naps and nighttime. A.
We love the white noise for better sleep too. We have always successfully used a cool mist humidifier. They put out white noise on three different levels, just like a fan, but in the process they are putting moisture into the air, and it's cool mist so no worry about hot steam around babies. Our daughter is 2.5 now, and we still use it for the duel purpose of sound and moisture in this dry climate.
I have one for my daughter with the same issue. I bought mine at Brookstone. It is wonderful. Good Luck.

Hi,
babies r us sells a device that is small and hooks to the side of the crib. It makes different sounds, including that of "white noise". We used it A LOT with our colicky daughter. I don't remember the brand, but am sure we bouth it at Babies r us.
How about trying a humidifier instead?
I have a CD player that has a repeat button. Sometimes I play classical music, but mostly I play sounds of the ocean or of nature. It's a much cheaper option to buy and can be used outside the nursery as he grows older.
We bought ours at Brookstone. We still use it and our kids are 6 and 4! I recommend investing a bit in it - b/c the cheaper ones sometimes have a repeating pattern you can hear.
Using a CD player is a great idea with a repeat button, as she stated they can be used for other things and they are cheap at Wal-mart! If your child has dry skin, you could use a humidifier to help with that and it also gives off some "white noise".
