Yes, this is very common. I never had one until I was pregnant! Monistat will be fine. A little Hydrocortisone cream will help with the itching, too.
Are yeast infections and the medication used to treat them safe for baby?

Dear L.,
Yeast infections are the miserable! Monistat is not absorbed that much systemically, so very litle, if any, will raech the baby. You are treating the infection topically, which is the safest way. But feel free to call your doctor/nurse and let them relive your worries. As a side note, after my baby was born and I started breastfeeding, I quickly (within a couple weeks) developed a yeast infection on my breast and had to treat it with monistsat. It was safe for the baby, and I was instructed to just wipe it off and let her breastfeed. This drug has been around a long time, so pretty much all of the side effects are known. I'm hoping that by the time you read this your infection is gone.
I did not get my first YI until I was pregnant. I started drinking Danactive- 1-2 a day it helps to regulate your good bacteria. And you get some extra calcium, and it is a lot nicer than the lovely creams you have to insert!
Trust your doctor - they would not have you do anything that could harm the baby. Your mucus plug is there to protect the baby from outside stuff. I am assume you are still intimate with your partner, aren't you? That is invading that same space.
Good Luck...
My advice is to contact your doctor to see what they suggest.
I take a dietary supplement that is natural and definately safe for the baby. It kills that bacteria that causes those pesky infections! Let me know if you want to know more!

L.,
I had a yeast infection w/both pregnancies. The told me to use an over the counter medication but to not insert it in all the way, only part way or half way. Also eating yogurt actually helps w/the problem. So maybe start eating a yogurt once a day. The cultures in yogurt actually help keep the yeast that we have on our bodies already, in check. I would consult your OB and tell them you concerns...thats why they make the big bucks, right??? :) good luck to you!
Hi L.-
I didn't have this problem but my baby girl did for the longest time and they had me putting her on some yeast infection creams. So I would say it should be fine for you b/c you aren't actually putting it into your baby's system... Your baby should be protected pretty well in there but I am not a doctor either. I would call your OB and ask to feel better about it.
It is normal and can happen. When you put the medicine up there only put the applicator in half way. That way it doesn't do anything to the baby. (This is what the doctor told me when it happened to me.)
L.,
I have monistat and agree. My doc tells me to ramp up my servings of yogurt with live accidophillus (I may have misspelled this). You can also buy accidophillus (natural bacteria in our bodies that combat yeast infection) at a healthfood store. I haven't had to use monistat for years. I try to eat several servings of yogurt a day and its good for the baby anyway.

Baby will be fine. Don't worry about taking the meds. Your first medication may not work though! With my second child, I was a walking yeast infection (and never had one for my first child). They had to try several different ones on me. Believe me, and I speak from experience, when a yeast infection gets bad, it will bring you to tears so use it quickly! :-). If it does not clear up for you in the proper time, call you doctor immediately so you can try something else. Good luck!!

You definitely need to treat the yeast. I can't believe you've never had one before. You have been blessed!
Dear L. R,
Understand that your hormones are going crazy, and yeast infections are common during pregnancy. Follow your doctor's advise and also try eating lots of yogurt to help balance the good vs. the bad bacteria in your system. This will help keep the yeast in check. Don't let it go too long, though, as I did and ended up with thrush, a yeast infection in the mouth. It was very uncomfortable! (It felt like severe chapped lips.)Good luck. PS After having 4 boys, when I experienced all these problems I found out when the baby was born that I had been carrying a girl! No wonder my hormones were going crazy:)

One treatment that is not only safe, but also helpful for baby if you are nursing is to ensure you are getting enough probiotics to help the good bacteria in your body. Take a probiotic supplement (like acidophilus) or eating a yogurt that doesn't have sugar (sugar encourages the yeast infection). The link below has a number of articles related to yeast infections. Dr. Mercola has a quality probiotic supplement that is good to take all the time to promote a good immune system. Hope this helps.

Hi L.. Unfortunately, this is normal. When I carried my third child I was in the same situation as you. It was bad enough to experience my first yeast infection while pregnant but the uncomfortable feeling of placing that cream inside me was even worst. All in all I gave in. As you know the feeling is not that great. But it worked in the long run. In just two days I was feeling better and the baby was fine too. She was beautiful healthy baby girl, born 8 lbs and 13oz. Good Luck! I know everything will work out for the best. Congratulation on the new bundle of J.! J.
Try Yogurt. You can eat it, or buy the plain stuff and apply it directly. I had the same thing, and have never bought the medications, just used yogurt and have had no problems. Good Luck.
Hi L.~
You'll actually have a harder time keeping the medicine up there rather than having to worry about it going further up...LOL...and even then, it won't reach the baby. Yeast, on the other hand, can get way out of control and it's possible to have yeast throughout your body...it's miserable and hard to treat exept with oral meds. Yogurt will help, too, a LOT!
Hope you are feeling better soon!
