Have any other moms read the articles on MSN and Yahoo today? http://health.yahoo.com/news/ap/baby_products_chemicals.html

Do any of you know if Burts Bees products are better? Or can suggest other all natural products that aren't supper expensive.

I am not sure if I should believe this article... so I just want your (moms) thoughts.

Thanks

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone. I definitly will look into Burts Bees. I was just curious if others were as concerned as I was when I read those articles online yesterday. It's hard enough being a new/first time mom, the fact that companies are putting harmfull chemicals in products doesn't make our job any easier.

Here is a website I found after reading about the Phthalates ("thah-lates")in baby items; but it's not just limited to baby items...the on this website you can search by brand name/Company name. http://www.safecosmetics.org/

I'm a SAHM mom of a 3 1/2 year old little girl & I also have a 14 year old son and have been married for 5 1/2 years.

I use Johnson & Johnson products on my five month old. There are no harmful chemicals in it that I can find. Very little odor to the lotion and other products I use.

Whole Foods or Trader Joe's both sell products you can use for babies that are natural. We just use oatmeal bar soap (99 cents at t.j.)on our 2 boys and Avalon Baby Soap (5.00 at Whole Foods) for thier hair. Good luck!

I think unfortunately in this day and age our children will be exposed to chemicals no matter how careful we are to shelter them. I find the pollution we live in sadenning, but it cannot be our dialy focus. Our children will be surrounded by chemicals every day of their lives. I am concentrating on the dangers I know I can control. When it comes to the baby soap I doubt I will rush out to replace my Johnson and johnsons.

There is so much junk put into baby products. As a mom of 6 I was appalled when I found out several years ago. I switched to Arbonne baby products. Not only do they do them without the junk but they are also nut and peanut free. I have used them for almost 9 years on my 2 youngest. I am an Arbonne rep now because I loved the products so much and saw such a difference in our familys skin. You can view the products at www.aia.myarbonne.com If you get your own membership for $29 you can buy the products at 35% off and because the products don't have additives, they last a long long time. Very economical.

Okay, that was an interesting article. Personally, I believe there MIGHT be something to it. However, I do find it disturbing that these "professional" researchers didn't know enough to 1. Have a control group (pretty much the first thing you learn your FIRST year of science classes) and 2. Test the baby care products for the presence of phthalates. I have four kids, always have used baby care products and haven't found any of these things to be true. Having said all that, though, I would probably use less and read labels. It can't hurt. I love Burt's Bees, but haven't even read their labels. They do recommend in this article that you don't need all the powders and lotions or very much shampoo. That was actually what I did with my babies. I can't remember ever using powder, rarely used lotions and used very little shampoo/baby wash. In the winter, I didn't bathe them completely every day, either.

Burts Bees does NOT contain phlates. I just went out today and spent 30$ on new baby products. I'm not sure how valid the article is, but I don't want to put my kids (3 mos and 4 years) at risk. I've been using the Burts Bees lotion on my 3 mos old anyway, and I really like it. Target carries Burts Bees and California Baby which is also toxin free (but I don't like the way it smells!).

You are wise to be concerned about ingredients in not only baby care products but all skin care products in general. A lot of people are not aware that skin care is a very loosely regulated industry in this country. In some European countries, it is illegal to have petroleum based derivatives such as mineral oil in skin care. In the US it is in 95% of everything sold. Artificial dyes and fragrances, which are the most common cause of allergic reactions, are found in abundance in many baby care product lines. Although I am sure that there are other decent lines out there, I am a consultant with Arbonne International and I know that their baby care line is superb. If you have not already been in touch with someone, I would be happy to send you some samples and information. I can be contacted at ###-###-#### or by email at ____@____.com. Thanks and good luck.

I agree with Melissa! We stay away from those aisles in the grocery store. I have switched to natural alternatives a few years ago after discovering the harsh chemicals that I was using every day. Even the laundry detergents are full of ingredients that are known carcinogens. It is really scary! I use Shaklee for my cleaning products, laundry, dish soap, etc.. For bodycare we use Dr. Bronners and we also use homemade products from a store in Riverview called Flower Child Herbs. Jill is the owner there and she takes great pride in her creations. We also use Fuzzi Bunz cloth diapers and I make my own wipes. We have saved so much money and they are way cuter that plastic diapers. You can find many alternatives out there. They may seem more expensive, but I have found that a little goes a long way. And aren't we worth it! You can view the Shaklee products here. www.livinggreenandlovingit.com

Hi Lisa, I am a speech pathologist and recently went to a seminar on brain development. The speaker had looked at the latest neurological research and did say that the worst environmental offenders for the brain are the chemicals in plastics and flame-proof clothing. Burts bees are probably pretty good- there are many companies that make more natural products. Do a search on the internet. Two good websites to google are Dr. Mercola and the Weston A. Price Foundation. L. M.

I have a few articles saved on my pc as well. Your skin (and your baby's/childrens') is the largest organ of the body - and it breaths just like we do for air. I believe, as my family does, that what you put on your skin - goes in. Therefore, we use botanical based products from Arbonne, purchase them at wholesale and know that we're doing something every day to be healthier. I'd be happy to send you samples if you're interested. ____@____.com

You will learn so much being a mom, not everybody will agree with the next person, that is when you trust your gut. It's always right.

Hi Lisa, I am a mom of a 2 year old little girl and we all use natural products. I do completely agree that the toxins in everything can't be good or healthy. Soaps and lotions are absorbed by the skin. We also eat all organic when possible and although this is a relatively new lifesyle for us (about 2 years), I think it has been beneficial to our health. My 2 year old daughter hasn't been sick for a year now, and I can't tell you the last time my husband and I have been sick, it has been so long. I know this isn't the only indicator that these products are working, but I can't deny the good health of my family. We do spend a lot more at the store, but it has been worth it. I don't really have a favorite product, but Whole Foods has MANY selections... and I will often get what is on sale. Soap and shampoos for my daughter seem to last a long time, and for the extra money, I do want to support the natural products

Hi Lisa,

I agree with your concerns. As moms, we have to be as careful with what our family uses for personal care as we are with what they eat. I highly recommend the Arbonne Baby Care line. There are no dyes or chemical fragrances (often the source of phthalates), and no mineral oil.

Arbonne products are infused with healthy herbal and botanical ingredients, and they are also vegan, hypoallergenic and pH correct. And they helped clear up my daughter's rash on her arms. I would be happy to send you a sample, which includes hair and body wash, body lotion, herbal diaper rash cream, body oil, and sunscreen SPF 30. I especially like the sunscreen because it doesn't have any funny colors and doesn't make my kids break out.

Thanks for sharing that artical. My mother in-law insists on using Burt's Bee's products. They are natural. There are other natural products on the market too. Meijer has some. You can always find them at Natural food stores as well.
They do tend to be more expensive but I think it's worth the piece of mind.
