K.:

My son was diagnosed with autism on July 1st, 2008. I am so curious as to whether you found any good playgroups/support groups. We live in the Englewood/Littleton area.

Please let me know.
Thanks!

You might also want to check out Denver Options - they have a lot of different resources and, if you qualify, help you with funding, too. My son was diagnosed about 5 years ago, but we kinda "went it alone" without support groups. Between the OT and various other therapies and extracurricular stuff, there just wasn't any time to commiserate with other people. As it turns out, it was just fine. My son's 10 now and mainstreamed in his 4th grade class and doing well. Like I tell other people, an Autism diagnosis isn't the end of the world. They're wired differently and you'll see how awesome and insightful they can be at times (as his parent, you probably already have noticed this!). Anyway, sorry for rambling...call Denver Options ###-###-#### a starting off point...they'll hook you up with the right people. Good luck!

BTW, love the spelling of your name!

Edit: Re: what Jodi P said. It's totally true. Our naturopath has done more for my son than any of his traditional medical docs. I would highly, highly recommend seeing a naturopath in addition to any other specialist you see.

I have taught a number of students with autism - you might check out Denver Academy for school options (how old is your son?) I know parents of children with autism who have had wonderful results from this camp: http://www.adamscamp.org/. I know this sounds cheesy, but I'm pretty sure Oprah is doing a huge campaign on autism awareness so you might check out her site for resources. I really enjoyed Jenny McCarthy's book about her son too - Louder than Words.

There are some natural ways of treating Autism that have been found very effective. If you are looking to go that route let me know and I will get you in touch with an amazing alternative doctor.

You might look on Yahoo - you can put in your local area and see if there is a group already or even start one too.

That is a great idea! My son was diagnosed 8 years ago and our journey has been amazing. He is now 11 and because he got early detection he is living a great life and you would never know of his early struggles.

I recommend a great book that I have posted on my blog. Scroll down it's on the left side- (out of sync child) the banner will take you to her site. Excellent and helped alot!
Occupational Therapy was the best thing we could of ever done for him too.

Hope that helps!
