My daughter is 30 months old. Her name is Destiny. We went to the emergency room on Monday and they told me she has an ear infection and a throat virus. Every since Saturday night she has complained that she can't sleep, too hot, doesn't want to eat anything at all. I don't know what to give her so she doesn't lose too much weight. The doctors gave me antibiotics for 7 days, motrin and tylenol for the fever. She gets a fever every 6 to 8 hours. I feel like she is dependent on the medicine bc the fever will not go down. Also for two days now she has a fever blister on her upper lip. My poor baby is sad and suffering. She is a little happier since I been giving her the antibiotics but still will not eat. I'm going crazy worrying and can't sleep. Any advice.

Try Popsicles mom. I know they dont have much nutriental value but it will help her throat and cool her down at the same time. Hang in there, this to shall pass.

As long as she's drinking, and stays hydrated, there is probably not much to worry. If you want, find something she enjoys doing, and feed her while she is destructed. When my son is sick, and doesn't want to eat, we give him to play his favorite game on We, and feed him at the same time. You can try to read her something interesting, rent a movie, make her laugh. Laughter is the best medicine. :-)

Give her cool baths, and keep a cool wet towel on her forehead (not cold. that will raise the fever). Let her eat popsicles, yogurt, jello, applesauce, mild soups and drink plenty of water and liquids. You can make your own healthier popsicles by freezing juice or fruit smoothies in little cups with a spoon or popsicle sticks in it. Fevers usually are at their highest at night.

Definitely keep her on the antibiotics, that is most likely for the ear infection, as viruses cannot be treated with antibiotics and need to run their course. If she loses a few pounds from being sick, she will gain it back shortly after. You can put ointment on the fever blister to help it. Just go to the pharmacy and ask what the pharmacist recommends for her age.

The tylonal and motrin can be alternated so you are actually giving meds every 4 hours.
Cool Compressis
Cool things to eat or drink.
Hugs
If she is not better the last day of antibiotic call pediatrician. She may need a longer course or antibiotics.
Wash her hands alot
when she sleeps keep her elevated, buy a wedge for her matress

Good Luck lots of kisses

Don't worry about the not eating. She'll make up for it when she is feeling better. Thats what our fat stores are for. As long as she is getting water, thats all that matters for the short term. I disagree with the advice to give her Jellos and pop cycles. They may offer her temporary throat relief and give her calories, but with all that sugar (sugar lowers your imunity) she will likely be sicker and feel sicker for longer.

How long has she been on the antibiotics? She should be feeling better after 3-4 days of the doses. She might need something stronger.
Fever is a GOOD thing. It means her body is fighting something. Just give the Tylenol or Motrin as needed/per her dosage.
In our house the rule is if you're sick--you cn eat whatever and whenever you want. Popsicles, jello, ginger ale for breakfast it that's what my son feels like. The fluids are the most important thing.
Cool clothes, cooled herbal bag for her head, lots of rest, extra cuddling, movie times, etc.
Hope she's better soon.
Sometimes with a bad ear infection, if they gave her amoxicillan, it might not be strong enough and she may need a second course, or a stonger antibiotic. Just a head's up.

A fever is actually GOOD for her. Just keep it below 104 and she should be ok. Of course, you want to use common sense in this area too. I would give her some meds to take it down so she's comfortable while she's awake, but if she gets warm while she's sleeping, it's ok. It's her body's way of fighting off the infection on its own. Don't worry about getting her to eat. Keep her hydrated. Popsicles, juice, pedialyte, ice cream, chicken broth, jello water, are all great things to keep her fluids up. Praying she's better soon!

For an ear & throat infection, it CAN and probably will take at least a week for the antibiotics to really make her feel better.

As for the not wanting to eat... If she's drinking, you can try Toddler Formula in a sippy. It's got the calories and all the vitamins and minerals her little body needs. She's not going to want to eat. Also, if it's hand, foot, and mouth (viral throat infection), all she'd be able to deal with is yogurt, bananas, milk, ice cream... Anything dairy really and cold and mushy. That virus doesn't go away until about 10 days after symptoms first start.

And my opinion on the fever... If it's not higher than 101, let it go. That's her body's way of fighting the infection. I alternated Motrin and Tylanol for my son's fever when he had hand, foot, and mouth. He didn't eat anything except yogurt, bananas, and pudding for a week... So he got toddler formula.

I know that when I have a sore throat and ears hurting... I don't want to eat. She'll be ok.

My girls just went through this although the ER never said what the fever was from. She got a fever of 102.8 a couple of weeks ago and they prescribed antibiotics. We gave her the antibiotics for 2 days and kept her fever down with alternating Tylenol and Motrin. It ran about every six hours also. I quit the antibiotics as I realized that she had a virus. Anyway she wouldnt eat, fussed and complained and also had what my husband said was a fever blister. I also noticed a large sore on the side of her tongue, but I thought that it was a cut as she is cutting her molars.
My mil called me as I was on my way home and said,"This baby has Thrush!" She was right.
I thought that thrush was little spots on the inner cheeks or tongue, not one big spot. The 'fever blister' was also thrush. When we finally got rid of it she ate almost a whole, adult sized bowl of Double Noodle soup that daddy made for himself. Twin sister got the fever and thrush also with about a weeks delay from sisters onset. Her thrush is still bothering her.

Whatever is going around does seem to take a week to get over the fever, but I would get her mouth checked for thrush. It is painful even without trying to eat.

If she has an ear infection, the antiobiotic should start working in 24 hrs.It could be that she needs somrthing stronger. Ammoxicillin dosent seem to work that well any more. Is that what they gave her? I would bring her to the pediatrician today. Its been a week now.

sounds like she could also have Kawasaki Disease. My daughter had it and it was awful. Fever wouldn't go down, she wouldn't eat. we did Mortin and tylnol every 3 hours. let me explain. Mortin at noon, then tylonol at 3, then mortin at 6 pm. alternate every 3 hours. When she had that, their were only a few sores in her mouth but the fever was insane. she didn't eat anything for days. She lives on ice pops & orange gatorade. Do not give her anything red. Good luck!

It is so hard when your baby is really sick! My toddler daughter had a bad one a few months ago and I was a wreck from the stress. Motrin and Tylenol alternating every 4 hours finally got the fever down. It was about 5 days of antibiotics before I had her weaned off the fever medication.

Can you get her to drink something hot like chamomile tea with honey or chicken soup/broth? Heat will help the ear & throat feel better for a little while. My kids like chicken soup when they are sick. I make it with a chicken Ramen and a little cut up carrot and celery (plus a bit of left over cooked chicken if I have it).

If the fever blister is really a cold sore then lysine supplements help it heal faster (you can also get ointments with lysine in them). I have gotten very bad cold sores sometimes and it always makes them go away faster (sometimes keeps them from fully becoming sores if you catch it soon enough). As and adult I take 2-3 tablets twice a day but a toddler would be much less. Maybe half a tablet to one tablet crushed in food (when she is eating again). Lysine is an amino acid (part of many proteins) so I am not aware of it causing any problems especially if you take for only 7-10 days at a time.

My youngest had a really bad flu bug when he was little over a year old. The was throwing up, diarrhea and fever. I remember them telling me not to give him anything after he threw-up for 2 hours, then 2 tbs, well, that wasn't good in my book. My poor little boy was throwing up all the time, and then had the dry heaves, it was horrible. My sister who's a nurse agreed with what the doctor's office told me but she said she gave her sons Popsicle. It worked, he would at lease suck on it, get some liquids off it.
You are getting a lot of good advice and I know it's so hard watching your baby be sick, pretty soon she'll be back to normal. Hang in there momma!

My daughter would get sinus infections that would go to her ears and then her throat. She ended up having tubes put in her ears this past May and is on Singulair for the allergies. She gets maybe one fever a month now when the weather changes abruptly.

Pedialyte, Gatorade, and chicken broth in a sippy cup worked for my daughter. Also, warm baths bring fevers down.

If she is not getting better go back to the doctor. As them to do blood work and recheck her. Ask about "Kawasaki Disease" Symptoms of are high fever for several days, blisters in the mouth, red peelling hands and feet (the bottom) and the white part of the eye turns red. That is not the blood shot look but like someone dyed the white of the eyes with red easter egg dye. It is often over looked because it is rare. IT IS TREATABLE! but it can have long term effects if not caught. If she is not better today (oct 2) go today and get her checked again. God Bless and I hope she will be better soon! A.

just make sure she gets the fluids down, if she's running a fever she probably doesn't feel like eating. you can get pedialyte in numerous flavor's, and maybe try ensure (comes in different flavor's too-check the ensure, if it has milk in it you probably don't want to give her this while running fever-will sour in her tummy and make her sicker), these are hydrating drinks, that have all the daily nutrient intakes a child needs. I also alternate these drinks (mainly the pedialyte) or mix them with sprite or 7up they make them a little funner to drink with the carbonation in them. until she breaks her fever, don't push to much for her to eat...she don't feel good mommy, just push the fluids and she'll be fine.

I would definitely go back to the doctor. If she has been getting a fever
every six to eight hours since Monday, she needs to be seen and rechecked. Good luck.

If the antibiotic is working, you should notice a difference within about 36 hours. If your daughter still has symptoms after 2 days of taking the antibiotic, she either has a virus, which the antibiotic will not affect, or she needs a different antibiotic.

Ok, this was my situation. I had to stay home for 2days to take care of my son. This has happen to him many times. :( (Daycare) :(

I would give him a warm/cool vicks bath. They sell the bath kind. Then I would apply the jar vicks all over. put pj's on him.

Next, I was told by HIS doctor to give him Tylenol and Mortin every 4 hrs. Nomatter if he has the fever or not for 1 day. I would even wake him and give it to him in the middle of the night like clock work. He went right back to sleep. By the next day the fever always breaks for him. I would do Tylenol frist round and than the Mortin on the 4 hr. (Not to gether-just want to be clear). :) It's a looooong night but it worked for me. Try to see if she would eat yogurt. I know its hard but they need something with all that medication. And lots to drink.

Like always ask your doctor first. If this is the way you should go. Good Luck! :)
