My kindergartener is a very good reader and enjoys story time but he's not big on picking up book and reading independently. The one exception has been the "Captain Underpants" series which makes me think he might enjoy reading the comic book format.

Does anyone here have title recommendations? I've read that Marvel has a superhero series for very young readers that I have to check out and I have "Tashi" on hold at the library. My son like space and superheroes a lot. I also plan on picking up Tintin when he's a bit older.

I would appreciate any input! Thanks :)

My son is 7 now but starting at 5 he loved:
Captain Underpants
At 6 he loved Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
This year it is Bogus (and the other ones in that series). I like the Bogus series. It's better than Diary of a Wimpy Kid (less snarky).

Comics he loves are Calvin and Hobbes, Garfield, and Owly. He Owly is something comic book stores might sell or you can special order it. There are a bunch of Owly books. It's adorable. Your local library will have childrens comic book section and they will probably have Owly (ours does). They will also have a bunch of others to give you ideas. Oh....and he also loves Peanuts. I'm probably forgetting a few.

I have a 12-YO boy that reads non-stop. He started out with Captain Underpants in Kindy as well. It took a year to move on but the school librarian was a huge help in finding his next interest and calming my fears of reading Cptn Underpants forever.

Both of my kids still love to read comics or graphic novels. Garfield and Calvin & Hobbes are most popular in our house. There is also a section for graphic novels for children at the library. These are often conversions of traditional novels.

As for some chapter books, my son moved from Captain Underpants to Magic Tree House and Andrew Lost. Both are adventure series with some history and science, respectively, tossed in. Then when he wanted to read Harry Potter but wasn't quiet ready we found the Dragon Slayers' Academy series.
