Seeking Advive on Housekeeping/meal Prep for Mom with Many Labor Complicationa

Hi,

I'm a few days out of the hospital after having a very adventurous birth of my first baby, Theo. I had to undergo a c-section as well as surgery on my leg and the recovery is a bit rough - I can only walk with the support of a walker and cant carry anything around the house.

We'd planned on a little support from a post partum doula, but as our baby is pretty mellow, and the real challenge is getting housework, meal prep, and errands dones . . .
it doesn't seem like a good fit anymore. Does anyone have a suggestion on the best kind of help to hire in this sitch? We have a good house-cleaner, but she doesn't do meals or errands. I'm looking for someone competent and resourceful but who also won't mind being given a list of things to do when they come in the door on most occasions.

And we probably only need them bewtween 7 and 12 hours a week . . .

is this a part-time housekeeper? And what is the going rate for this kind of thing?

Many thanks!

E.

Hi E.,

Congratulations on the birth of your baby, and best wishes for a quick recovery. What you are seeking is a Mothers Helper. The going rate is about $15.00 an hour. A responsible high school or college student may be ideal. To find someone ,try a free posting on craigs list ,or at your local grocery store- you can also call the student life offices of the local colleges and they will give you guidelines for submitting postings to their student employment office. Good luck in your search. L. S

E.,
Let me first congratulate you and your partner on the recent birth of your son. Enjoy every minute with him, it goes by quite fast!
Now onto your question.... sounds like you may be in need of a Home Health Aide or Mother's helper. I used to do this myself for work and I would arrive at the clients home, do some light cleaning, do some grocery shopping (with a very specific list) and also would just be there as a companion as many of my clients were lonely either due to illness or being elderly and having no family nearby.
I spent apx 2-3 hours 1-2 days a week with each client. Maybe your town/city hall will have some information on a contact for you?
Good luck and congratulations again.

Sounds like a good situation for a Mother's helper. High school kids work!

Hi E.!

First I just want to say that I hope and pray you heal quickly and perfectly... It must be tough for you right now.

I believe the position you are describing can be put into the category of "Mother's Helper". I myself do that right now before my own 1st baby is born. The position requires anything and everything you need in order to make your life easier. I've done grocery shopping, meals, babysitting, cleaning, ironing, laundry, accompanying them on daily outings, helping plant a garden, watering plants, calling the plumber, etc. Every day I go to work there is a list waiting for me when I walk through the door! The position is paid anywhere from 15-25 an hour.

Good luck! I hope that helps a bit!

Since this is summer time, try looking for a neighborhood college student or high school student who wants to supplement their summer job. You could post an ad on craigslist or talk to any neighbors who might know someone.
