*Seeking Advice on Potty Training a Girl with Spina Bifida

My middle daughter has told me she doesn't want to wear diapers any more. This is great! The part that was hard for me was when she asked me why she cant wear big girl panties. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to go about potty training? I did put a pair of panties on her and put a maxi-pad inside and she was so happy because she was not in a diaper, but putting her on the potty every 30-45 minutes can be hard....

What can I do next?

I would definitely talk with her therapists/doc about this. Do you think she may feel the sensation of a full bladder or having to go at all? I wonder if one of those bed wetting alarm systems might help get started, I know they have alarm systems that alert the individual and also the parent/caregiver even when they are in another room.

I would get into the rehab programs at Children's Hospital. They are wonderful. One of their doctors has to order everything, I think. I'd call them. I took my granddaughte for years and it was great. They deal with everything there and have some programs in Westland and other places besides the medical center.

I don't a lot about this ability hindrance but think it would depend on if she has bladder control. If she does, at her age, other than the fact that it will a LOT of work, it will be the same as training any other child. If she doesn't have that feeling then you need to talk to a therapist. Please ask for help at this time from afamily member or friend or take the other kids to a daycare so that you can give her you full attention.

I would contact the physician who sees her for spina bifida or a nurse in the office. It would be dependent on her ability to control the muscles of her bowel and bladder with the spinal cord impairment.

Does she have control of her urinary tract? I am B. and I have worked in PT for 30 years or more. People that have paralysis from the waist down can be put on a bowel program for the BM issue. It is a matter of training her body. I'd have to know a little more to help anymore than that.
you can email me if you want.

Hi C.,

You might want to talk with her dr about whether it is possible for her to have total control of her bladder and bowels. If not, would your daughter feel better about putting little girl panties over the diaper? Just a thought.
