Seeking Advice on Games for the Wii

My husband and I are thinking about getting our boys a Wii for Christmas. Our boys are 13 yrs, 9 yrs, 9 yrs (yes, they are twins!), and 5yrs. What are good games that they could play together or in at least teams of two? What accessories do you recommend and how many (for example, do we need four numchucks or is one or two okay?). Our families want to help us purchase this so please be specific about what are "necessary" items for them all to have and what items are just extras. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank-you! Thank-you! Thank-you! The suggestions were fabulous! We plan to look for a bundle deal and a variety of games (Lego, Sports, and Car games are favorites for our boys). We plan to get four controllers, four numchucks, and two rechargers (or enough to recharge four controllers). Thanks so much for your help. I LOVE this site!

The LEGO games are a lot of fun, and I didn't see them mentioned yet. We have LEGO Star Wars, and one of the LEGO Indiana Jones games. They are multi-player, and nice for the younger ones because you can "lose a life" (fall off of a cliff, etc) as many times as you want and all you do is lose the pieces (nuts and bolts if I remember correctly) that you have collected so far, and it puts you right back where you were (i.e. at the top of the cliff, before you jumped!) Hope this helps!

Definitely get extra controllers/nun chucks. Our family enjoys Smooth Moves; Game Party; Mario Party 8; Wii Deca Sports and the new EA Active. Of course Guitar Hero and Rock Band are GREAT!

I, too, think you'll find you need a total of 4 remots and 4 nunchucks. Good games with a good age-range that we've enjoyed are Wii Sports, Mario Carts (need steering wheels, but so worth it!), and Playground.

I definatly recommend that you will need 4 remotes and at least 2 numchucks. I also recommend you ask for extra batteries or a charging system. We also we able to find differant color covers for them. That way they can have their "own" remotes. Have fun playing.

I hope everyone is still doing well in GC!
Anyway to the question...
We have Guitar Hero, but some of the songs are questionable & you need a guitar (2 player, Caleb has been able to play it since he was about 6), the same about the songs goes for Rock Band (4 players: guitar, bass, drums & microphone).
We also have... Boom Blocks & it is a favorite with everyone even with Eli (4yo next month) (4 players all need nuchucks); Mariokart (4 players) you can get the steering wheels, but controlers work fine; Happy Feet (2 player); Wii Play (2 player) has lots of fun games; CARS Mater-National (2 players w/ nunchucks); Monster Jam (4 players) monster truck competions; Sonic & the Rings has party games (4 players); Bust-a-Move Bash! (up to 8 players w/ nunchucks); Wii Fit (1 player at a time & the board is needed) is a fun balance competion, but you have to get out of your profile before someone else can play or it messes up your scores (we have a family competion, but Eli can't/won't play it); Super Mario Galaxy (2 players with nunchucks) & then there are lots of Game Cube games that can be used... we have Tonka Rescue Patrol that your 5 yo may like (1 player) & Sonic Heros (2 player). The problem with the Game Cube games is that you need the Game cube controllers that give you about 3-4 feet between you & the Wii & you need the Game Cube memory cards. I also like the fact that you can download older 2 player games such as Super Mario Brothers (1, 2 & 3) & other 'out dated' games. We really like 'GOO' (or the world of goo, I can't remember). It is a 1 player game, but is competitive. You try to get somewhere by sticking black or green 'Goo' balls together.

I hope this helps! You can always e-mail me if you have any questions about my game suggestions!

God bless!

We are a family of four and have a Wii. We have four controllers and numchucks. There are games that all four can play together, but they each need a controller. My kids love the mini golf games, and there is a Disney's Think Fast, Summer Sports, Winter Sports. Our family fave is the bowling game and tennis game that comes with the Wii. We can all play together. Hope that they have fun. Good luck and God Bless.

Wii Resort is a great game for families. It has lots of activities like bowling, wakeboarding, canoeing to name a few. You will need the new Wii motion remote cases for this game. I think you could probably get by with just two remotes and have everybody share, but if you could get four, that would probably make it easier so you don't have to remembe who's using what remotes. You really don't need the extra equipment for this game especially. We also have the Wii carnival game that my daughter (4yo) loves, and Wii Play is a good one also. I think this is a great game system and you and your family will love it!

I'm not trying to sell you anything but I can HIGHLY recommend this Wii docking station and 4-way charger on E-bay 140350775778. It's only $29.99 w/ free s/h. I bought a recharger for 2 initially and decided it wasn't enough when all four of us started playing. I positively LOVE this docking station. It keeps all the remotes together AND you don't need to use batteries as rechargable batteries come with the docking station! It also has a built in fan which is REALLY necessary for the Wii because the fan inside the Wii is not really acceptable for the heat it draws...which means if you are playing for an exceptional length of time the game will freeze up/lock and you will have to shut everything down until it cools off...so the docking station or a fan like 280421113534 is really needed. It TOTALLY rocks (the 4-way docking station) and is SOOOO worth the money!!!

Of course, you will need 4 nunchucks to go with the remotes. Beyond that you only need accessories if you are really into certain games. Sports games like tennis and golf make having the accessories nice but not necessarily necessary. I should warn you the regular Star Wars game has light saber accessories you can buy...they are nice but you MUST have a large room to be able to use them or else expect damage to your lamps and any other breakables (LOL).

As for games. My kids are 6 & 5 and the LOVE LOVE LOVE all the Lego games. We have Indiana Jones, Star Wars and Batman. I think Indiana Jones and Star Wars is probably my son's favorite. I saw the Star Wars lego one for under $20 at Wal-mart recently. A new Indiana Jones Lego game is coming out just in time for X-mas too. Bakugan is also going to be hot on the Wii this year as they have just released the game. I have it for my son for X-mas so he hasn't played it yet but it will give the kids a more realistic version of playing the popular game. My son also loves the Hot Wheels racing game. It's really cool because it gives you the feeling like you are actually IN the toy car (running the tracks, around bedrooms, through mini-golf courses, etc.). Not terribly hard to learn although all the games take a little patience initially to get the hang of the remote.

I guess the biggest thing you need to be aware of is where you will draw the line at violence. My son is NOT a violent person (he does not hit or bite others and is always polite and nice) BUT he DOES LOVE to blow things up and beat people up on the Wii...I'm guessing this is a boy thing as he will laugh maniacally over it. If this doesn't bother you then you have LOTS of games to chose from...and of course your teen will want more of those instead of the younger games the twins and the 5 yr old will be playing.

DeBlob, Carnival, Wii Sports are all good games for 4 people and are non-violent. I think all the Mario games will play 2 player as will the Lego games. Many of the quests on the Lego games will require having 2 people to be able to solve the problems or acquire all the treasure out there, you can also play them SIMULTANEOUSLY which is really cool...my husband and son played them for HOURS last year at X-mas.

I have Guitar hero and my kids aren't interested. My BFF has Rockband and his kids weren't interested in it after the first 10 hours...so I would recommend looking into used versions of these if you think your kids would be interested...otherwise, it's not worth the new cost.

My recommendation for best bang for your buck is to look on ebay. Bundles are your best way to go...especially if you can beat the prices in the store. I shop often on ebay and will often buy multiple pieces from the same seller if they offer free or discounted shipping on multiple items. Many will just charge you for the flat rate box if they can make it all fit in. You may also be able to find a bundle of used Wii games at reasonable prices online.

Games I don't recommend because my kids found them difficult or hard to understand/manuever...Madagascar, Bee Movie, Speed Racer, Ben 10 (very hard but maybe good for the 13 yr old), Space Chimps, George of the Jungle and Alvin & the Chipmunks. My recommendation would be to get the Legos games and a game or 2 that 4 people could play and then rent some from your local Movie Gallery or Blockbuster (you can also get an online membership to GameFly...basically Netflix for games) and try out different games. It's worth the $4-5 a week rental fee or a monthly fee (as least short-term) to try a game before you are stuck with something that stinks. Trust me...I've spent HUNDREDS on games and have had more lemons than I care to count. Recommendations are good, but unless you have seen the game in action or seen if your kids can grasp it and understand it, it's just nothing but words. You can also purchase used games at GameStop.

I wish you the best of luck. I think you will be really pleased with the game system and will have many years of good use from it. Just remember to estabilish your rules early...otherwise they will be at the system all day long. Ok during the holidays, but a nightmare once school starts! Ours has to periodically go away on a "vacation"...LOL...saves my sanity, ya know? Any other questions, just drop me a line!
