Seeking Advice of Other Moms Who's Child Has Had a Kidney Infection!

My 4 year old son started running a high fever 2 weeks ago. He then had a febrile seizure and after a trip to the ER, they determined it was strep, as the culture came back positive. He received a shot of Rocephin, however, 2 days later, the fever was back, and he complained of lower right back pain. We took him to our GP, and discovered he had a kidney infection. He has had 2 shots of Rocephin, a week of Amoxicillan, and 3 days of Bactrim, but is still running a fever, and still complains of kidney pain. Does anyone know when I can expect improvement? He was slightly dehydrated and I have pushed the fluids as best I can.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I appreciate everyone's advice, and I took my son to see a urologist who ordered a CT scan. Good news is, his kidneys are fine. However, the CT scan showed multiple lesions on his liver, and a small mass adjacent to his rectum. We did an ultrasound this morning, and are waiting to talk with a general surgeon to discuss the findings and what will happen next. My worst fears are entering my mind, of course. Again, thank you to all that posted advice. I took it all to heart. Now I wait and pray.

Hi C.,

I was just looking up information about kidney infections for myself this past weekend. It said that some people are more prone to having them and sometimes will take 2 rounds of antibiotics to get that stubborn infection to go away. Take care.

do you know if they did a urine culture? that would tell what the organism is & what meds it is sensitive to. it may not be completely accurate due to the rocephin shot he had previously received for the strep (throat - i am assuming). but it still might help some. also, are they planning any further studies...renal ultrasound &/or vcug? also, this could be a post-strep type of thing. might need to see a renal doc or an infectious disease doc to sort it all out.

My daughter had a kidney infect when she was 3 months old..i think the daycare didnt clean her well enough. We had to go to ou childerns for a die test to check for reflux. But when i was 4 i had kidney infections and they check for reflux i didnt have any but they did say it was what i was eating. Foods with a lot acid well do it. I give my daughter cran-grape juice or straight cranberry juice that flushes out the kidneys. Good luck. We havent had another one yet.knock on wood!!! Lol

It is difficult to say what the real issue is. It could be one of many things ...... further diagnosis is needed.

He probably needs to see a pediatric kidney doctor (nephrologist) who will recommend or do an ultrasound (imaging) of the kidneys and also do urine culture.

You need to take him to a Pediatric Urologist. The infection should have cleared up after all of those meds. Those are some pretty strong antibiotics. I had a similar experience with my 3 year old (recurring kidney infections). It turned out after doing an ultrasound that one of her kidneys was very small and shriveled which they believe had been like that since birth. Make the appt. as soon as possible.

my son had the same problem when he was 6months old, after few days in hospital, we went in for further testing, at which time they learned he only has 1 kidney, the other one either never developed or was shrivled up by the kidney reflux he has. I would definitly take him back to the dr, and see if you can get in to see a urologist, we use a great one who is out of OKC but he comes to Tulsa a few times a month. Let me know if you would like his information and i will get it for you. Best of luck to you & your son :)

It's possible it's not just a kidney infection, but a kidney stone. it can lead to what seems like an endless kidney infection in younger kids (i.e. my daughter when she was 6). push real cranberry or cranberry blend juices (no cocktails), no carbonation, limit caffeine and let the GP know that he's still running a fever. I'm sorry I'm of no more help...we did get some stuff for the UTI pain but it tastes nasty.

My son also has kidney problems. You should probably take him to a urologist.
