Uti/kidney Infection? Me, Not My Daughter This Time

I was on an antibiotic about a month ago for a UTI. I think I probably had the UTI for about a month before finally realizing that I needed to go to the doctor. I didn't have painful urination at all. I just felt a discomfort in my bladder, and then noticed that my urine smelled odd, and that's when I knew for sure that something was wrong. So, I think I may have had the infection for about a month before seeing my doctor, if I go back to when I started feeling the discomfort. My back was also hurting really badly too, but I attributed that to my muscles, or maybe a new period symptom. After reading, I realized the pain could actually be my kidneys (from infection), but I didn't read about it until after I had already seen my doc, so I didn't tell him about the back pain.

I started to feel a little bit better with the antibiotic for a couple of days. I had more energy, and I wasn't so tired anymore. The antibiotic only lasted 5 days though. I had a feeling that it didn't fix the problem, but I thought maybe I was just being paranoid. I finished that antibiotic about 2 weeks ago, or more, and now the odd smell is back in my urine. So now, I know for sure that something is wrong, and probably has been wrong this whole time. Also, the pain in my back is terrible. It hurts to stand for too long, and I'm awake right now writing about it, because I can't sleep from the pain.

It's not like a child birth level of pain, but it's pretty uncomfortable, and today has been the worst day. I'm just wondering, since tomorrow is Sunday, what do you think I should do? I don't want to over react, but I don't want to go into septic shock either... and I don't know at what point that can happen...

Thanks... and sorry if I'm over reacting. It just hurts.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Ok, so this is an updated and revised "what happened":

My doctor called me at 4 a.m and told me to go to urgent care, if i wanted to, in the morning. He didn't seem too concerned, but I feel like something is definitely wrong, and I wish he would be more concerned about this. He said it could have just been back pain from having back pain. I went to urgent care this afternoon, and they took a urine sample and sent it in for a culture. Can I just say, I feel like overall CRAP. Anyway, they wrote 2 scripts for me. One was an antibiotic and the other for the pain. They tapped on my back to see if I had pain, and I had none from the tapping. For that reason, the doc didn't seem to be too concerned about my kidneys. Sometimes I wish I could just be my own doctor and order my own damn tests. Is there something wrong with just ordering the test when I tell you I know myself, and I KNOW something is wrong? They said that my urine had blood in it, and the student doctor mentioned getting some imaging done. The doctor doctor said we would wait to see what the culture showed before ordering imaging though. If they don't order imaging, I am going to refuse to leave until they do order it. Other than the blood, they didn't see anything, but I kind of think that HAS to only be because I drank half of a big jug of cranberry juice before bed (the other half throughout the day) and I have been drinking lots of water all day. I KNOW something is wrong. My urine smelled so funky a couple of days ago, that the whole bathroom smelled like it after I went... even like 5 minutes later when I walked back through. That's when I realized I NEEDED to make an appointment, but I wanted to wait until the weekend was over because I had a get together planned at my home this weekend. After the wine last night, I was in some serious pain.

Anyway, what could the blood mean? That's the part that seemed concerning to the nurse, and I'm just wondering why.

I urge you to call your doctor and talk with the advice nurse or the doctor on call right away. Actually, I think I'd go to Urgent Care or the ER tonight. Two weeks with continuing serious pain after taking antibiotics is a very bad sign. And you first had symptoms a couple of months ago. You've had this infection much too long.

I see that you have also waited to have your daughter seen. Why do you put off seeing the doctor. If it's because you don't have insurance, find a low cost clinic. Figure out why and fix it. It sounds like both you and your daughter are in need of timely medical care. Do not risk yours and your daughter's health.

And...in the future call your doctor before your antibiotic prescription is completely finished. You should be symptom free before you finish the prescription. Waiting 2 weeks is much too long to consider that the infection isn't gone.

My cousin's wife died from an untreated UTI. The infection went to her kidneys and then into her blood because she didn't go to the hospital until it was already that far along. She was unable to get out of bed by the time she went to the hospital. She didn't like doctors. You aren't that seriously ill but you could be in just a day or two.

After your SWH You are not a doctor. Do not expect to know what you have before you call him. It's the doctors job to figure out what is wrong. Now you know that, when you get sick, your symptoms are subtle. Call sooner next time. An advice nurse can help you figure them out.

And...... don't allow yourself to feel bad about calling him this late unless feeling bad will help you call him earlier next time. His job is to be on call. You're paying him for it.

You need immediate care. Either go to the ER tonight or urgent care first thing in the morning. UTI's are not something where you ever want to delay treatment. Tell them that you have already received one round of antibiotics and let them know what it was. Your doctor may want to do a urine culture, in addition to the quick test, as that will tell them what antibiotic will be more effective. They'll give you something for right now, as the results on the culture will take a few days. Also, are you up to date on you GYN exams? You may want to check with your GYN for an exam, as there could be something (i.e. - infection) going on that is contributing to the UTI or reinfecting you. That would require a separate treatment. While you're at your GYN, they can do a urinalysis to check whether you are cured. SInce your antibiotics did not work the first time, you should anticipate that any doctor you see is going to want you to have a urinalysis after treatment to verify that you are cured. Most important right now is that you get medical attention asap.

Update:
The blood could just be a symptom of the infection. If there is no infection, there should not be blood in the urine. DId the pills he gave you turn your urine blue or flourescent orange? That's always kind of freaky. I still recommend going to your GYN, as they often are better at treating UTI than a primary care dr. Imaging can be pretty costly...if they show that you have totally cleared the infection with a urinalysis, I wouldn't push it. If you haven't cleared the infection, you probably need to talk to your GYN and possibly a urologist.

I drink a lot of cranberry juice and I do believe it helps.

It is good that you called your Dr., maybe he can call in an RX for you since you pretty much know what it is.

Personally, I would not go to the ER but if my pain was bad enough, etc, I would certainly go to one of the 24hr Dr places like CareNow, etc. They can test your urine and prescribe an RX as well.

Hope you feel better soon. UTI's are no fun.

Oh my. Listen to the ladies, NJD. I also have a friend who passed out before she even realized she had a UTI. When she fell, she hurt her foot. It damaged a nerve in her foot, and she has had more pain than any person should have to go through in the past 3 years. It has caused "dropped foot" and she can barely walk.

GO TO THE DOCTOR.

Cranberries, blue berries and cherries all have an enzyme that prevents an infection from being able to stick to the linings of the urinary system. It doesn't hurt to drink the juice or eat the fruit now but you need an antibiotic. Make sure you are drinking real juice and not a fruit juice cocktail or beverage. Those contain added sugar and the bacteria will feed on the sugar. Actually eating the fruit is better than the juice.

The simple prevention for UTI's is drinking a lot of water all the time. When you get rid of this infection start drinking more water during the day. Other liquids can be substituted such as coffee and tea but water is best.

Call your doc in the morning. Kidney infections present themselves with a high fever, chills, and pain so it does not sound like you have a kidney infection. Definitely call doc tomorrow. Feel better. I

CranActin and Goldenseal....maybe 2 of each 5 times per day for 7 days. Works everytime....AND completely gets rid of the infection. I'd add PB8 or Oregano oil in capsules to balance out the yeast after the antibiotic.

Ibuprofen puts stress on the kidneys, part of the urinary tract. I'd think twice about this.

LOTS of water. No caffeine.

I'm writing late here but I sure hope you went to the ER or urgent care. Kidney infections are something to be concerned about. My daughter has vesicoureteral reflux (grade 3) of her right bladder so after she goes potty, her urine is backing into her kidney's. I spent 4 days in the hospital in the pediatrics department due to her having a severe kidney infection and put on 2 different antibiotics along with a 105 fever that progressively went down over the days in the hospital. Now she is on a low grade antibiotic every day until February 2013 and she will be retested to see if the reflux is fading.

I only state that it needs to be taken care of because kidney's are vital organs and once infected, scarring can happen and if never taken care of then transplant. Now do I think this is your case? Probably not but I had vesicoureteral reflux when I was 2 and had surgery to correct the problem at 3. I have slight scarring on one of my kidneys and they said had my parents waited to get my surgery, I would have been waiting in line for a kidney transplant.

Get to an ER if possible. Let them test you and request something on your kidney's like an ultrasound. My daughter had that done and that's how they found out she had a severe kidney infection.
