Seeking a Reputable Moving Company

My family is going to be moving soon within the L.A. area from a townhouse to a house and we are looking for a reputable, inexpensive moving company. We are going to do the packing ourselves but with 2 kids, we need someone to load and unload the truck and do all of the heavy lifting for us. The last time we moved was 10 years ago and we did it all ourselves back then. That's not an option now. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

If its the kids that youre thinking about (getting in your way) then why dont you see about someone watching them?
Then plan a moving party w/ your closets friends/family members.
We have never been able to afford to hire moving people to help us move.
In fact, when I moved from Wa all the way to Ky, my husband packed up the biggest UHaul and drove over 2000 miles!
Since moving here in '99, we have lived in 2 apartments and bought and sold our 1st (starter) home and currently in our 2nd home.
The 2nd time we moved, my husband paid a boy in his late teens for a couple hrs of work..mainly for the heavier things as we had moved the majority of the smaller things ourselves.
We didnt have that much stuff from living in the apts but we noticed after living in our 1st house that we had more than what an apt would hold...lol!
This time we had his parents (his Mom and I stayed and cleaned), their neighbor friend, 1 of our friends and my husband.
We had intended on buying pizza's for everyone that was helping but they all decided to keep on moving stuff till it was all done...what a bunch of troopers!
We couldve had a new home party but because we moved to this house 2 weeks b4 Thanksgiving, we gave them a little gift card to a local restaurant!
We got it done fast and cheap.
You all might have more fun having a social gathering especially since you have kids and the weathers nice!

I've used Delancey Street Foundation a couple of times moving within Los Angeles County (we also moved from a 3rd floor condo on the Westside to a house in La Crescenta after our 1st child turned 1 year old). They came highly recommended and it's a non-profit organization (for former drug users, ex-convicts (! - hee-hee!) and homeless who are trained in different vocational fields - you can read more about them on their website). They have been on Oprah, Discovery Channel, and other news stories regarding their graduates and success.

Initially, we had bids from 3-4 reputable moving companies, including Delancey Street Foundation. They were the only ones who showed up in button-down shirts and TIES! Very professional and gave us great quotes for our move. They were on time, worked efficiently, protected our valuables very well, and even finished the move in less time than they estimated. And when I tipped them, they were not allowed to keep them but it went to the foundation as a donation so I received a tax-deduction letter!

Give them a try! You won't be disappointed. I like them better than Starving Students (who dragged their feet when they were working because they were getting paid by the hour and even broke my furniture and some glasswares). By the way, most companies will not cover IKEA-like furnitures....Just thought you should know.

Good luck on your move!

I just moved within LA and used Flat Rate. The guys were great. I didn't think they were too expensive but I also had them back my kitchen (two of them because I had a guesthouse). The deal is that they work on a flat rate quoted to you ahead of time. Not hourly like most other companies which can be helpful.

I'm sure there are cheaper but at least I trusted them with my stuff (not to ruin) and they were nice guys.

My sis used them on the east coast and recommended them to me.

Good luck!

We used Delancey Street Movers and they were AWESOME! It's actually a nonprofit and any tip you give them is a tax deduction. The guys were great, friendly and efficient. No breakage and their rate was more than reasonable. It's an organization that allows recovering addicts to work in exchange for room/board. I believe that money earned goes straight to the organization to do job training. It's really awesome. They have a website. I have friends who recommended them to us and we would use them again in a heartbeat! Good luck with your move!!

We also used Delancy Street and recommend them with no hesitation. We moved twice this year - once from Northern California using Moovers Inc and once from Santa Monica to L.A. Moovers (started by former Delancy Street employees and who are great for long distance moves) recommended Delancy Street for our local move. The Delancy Street employees are very hard working, courteous, experienced and competitively priced. Any tip you give goes to their foundation and becomes a tax deductible donation. I also appreciated that you can buy different levels of insurance to protect your belongings and property. We just had new hardwood floors installed before our move, so we chose a coverage that would protect the floors in case anything accidentally scratched or gouged them. Nothing like that happened. There were a few little things that were bumped or bruised and what I really liked about the Delancy Street employees was that they didn't try to cover it up or hide it. They were very honest about possible damage, but nothing was seriously damaged to the point we would file a claim. Just the normal bumps associated with moving. Please don't hesitate to include this company as one of the ones you get a bid from.

Hi K.,
I just moved in January and used Delancey Street Foundation. They were wonderful! Delancey Street is a foundation that helps troubled youths turn their lives around. They were a lot less expensive than some of the other companies i've gotten quotes from in the area and they showed up early and wouldn't let us lift a finger. They can even pack your items for you, which was great because you forget how much stuff you actually have. They worked very quickly and actually wanted to have the move done fast so you didn't have to pay more than you had too. I HIGHLY recommend them.
