K.,
I wanted to let you know my son 8 has ADHD and has been taking meds since he was 5. I take him to Dr. Roger Robinson off of 30 in fort worth. The number is ###-###-####, he has really help my son a lot.
My 7 yr. old son has ADHD and we have yet to find a good Dr to help with his medications. Every course of medicine we start works wonders at the beginning, but before the months end he's numb to it. We found a Psychiatrist that counseled and prescribed. That was of course ideal but that Dr. has one course of action for ADHD and it wasn't at all tailored for our son. We want to find a Dr. that can prescribe him the right medicines and teach our son and us how to live with ADHD (Arlington, Grand Prairie, Mansfield area preferably). We have used a psychologist and psychiatrist, but he missed a lot of school. Its affecting his schoolwork, peer relationships and his self esteem. I appreciate any advise!

I am more than glad to share my story with you. I knew from the time my baby was about 6 months old that she was "different." I worked in day-care 20 years and had seen plenty of kids and knew she was not in the mold of any I had ever encountered. People thought I was nuts. Well by the time she was 4-5 it was becoming more clear there was a problem. I had her tested and she was ADHD supposedly. Now she does not fit that mold either. ADD/ADHD is an umbrella over many different problems and she did not have the learning disability or inability to concentrate, etc. I went to numerous places including the Child Study Center in downtown Ft. Worth. I tried with all my effort to get her help and tried various medications.
Here is what helped us. Two things truthfully. One was OTC I used pediactive available in Vitamin World and Efalex which is for brain and eye coordination and I purchase it from Australia. The whole family takes the latter one.
In addition to that. I worked at JPS Hospital in Ft. Worth and hated the thought of using the county hospital for health care for her; for me was alright, but not her. Anyway I went to a Dr. Jose Silvas. He is the most awsome doctor I have ever been to in my life. He listened to her, to me and did as we asked and never put her on medications I did not want or dosages I felt were too high. She was never spacy or anything like that. I cannot recommend him enough. Please try him and see what you think.

We have not been to him in several years as we lost my daughter's medicaid and I am self employed and have no insurance that they accept. She is on CHIPS and I can only go in Dallas County now. I went to a clinic outside the hospital but it shows he is at the hospital now. I was told his fee was too high to pay out of pocket for and they would not make an appointment unless I had insurance. He takes a lot of time with you and that is the reason he told us that he is willing to work in the county healthcare system. He does not want his patients herded through like cattle. He wants to see less and give them quality treatment.
Good luck and please do let me know what happens,
J.

My eldest is pretty ADHD herself, but when I was getting pressure from her teachers & even to a degree our pediatrician to medicate, I started researching other options. I pulled her out of Keller ISD & put her into Barbara Gordon Montessori in Colleyville. It has been a great fit. The extra $800/ mo for tuition isn't exactly easy to absorb, but my small business provides for the tuition & it has made a HUGE difference for her in all the factors you noted. The environmental change to Montessori from public school can be a great fit for ADD/HD kids.
The Block Center in Bedford is another alternative.
I won't tell you to nix the drugs, but consider them as only part of the solution. We with ADD/HD also need to learn to cope with it, recognise it, and grow despite it. I count myself in part of that mix & tried drug theraphy as an adult w/ no good results. But just being aware of it has helped me. There are LOTS of good books on the subject out there- some pro-meds, others anti, some pro ADD/HD, other who refuse to believe it exists. I'm not sure where I stand on it. As a left brained-artist, with a very bright, articulate, expressive & creative daughter, all I do know, is that we think & process things differently from others who are more dominately right brained; and unfortunately, this is a right brained world. Not everyone responds well to meds- about 25% of Add/HD'ers don't. That's where coping skills & environmental/ educational changes may help greatly.
Good Luck!

I strongly suggest Dr. Kirsten Archer at Mansfield Pediatrics!!! My 8-year old son with ADHD is using the patch, Daytrana, and it's working GREAT!!! Dr. Archer has communicated with teachers and gone WAY above and beyond what I have ever seen any doctor do! She is the BEST no doubt.
Hi K. C.
I really really hope you're still around!!! Please share w me what you found. Have you found someone you recommend? My question is exactly the same as yours and we are in the same area. My son is 11 1/2. I am looking for a Dr or therapist like you described for my son. If you are still on this forum PLEASE please please respond. It's so hard to navigate this by trial and error. I would love to hear your advice!!!
Thank you so much!

I would suggest seeing a nutritionist along with an MD. Dr. Theresa Cook in Dallas is excellent. Studies show that many ADD/ADHD conditions can be reversed by incrasing the intake of fruits and vegetables and limiting processed foods. If you are interested in an easy way to accomplish the feat of getting your child to eat his fruits and vegetables, email me.

Hi K.,
Have you tried any alternative medicines?
I know this is not for everyone, but helpful for many.
I have some ideas if you would like to hear them.

Hi Kristi,
A friend of mine had a son that was 5 and had ADHD. The medication wasn't the best for him so they took him to a chiropractor and within a couple of months her son was completely off of medication and is now a normal, healthy boy. You may want to check into your local chiropractor. Good luck with your search.
