Hi Mamas,

I'm looking for a midwife for my 3rd pregnancy. I've talked with my insurance company and the midwife will only be covered if she works out of a clinic or OBGYN office. I would really love to do a home birth but I'm afraid that a certified nurse midwife won't do them because they work along side doctors. I would love any advice! Thanks in advance!!

So What Happened?

So it looks like I will have to use the group at harris. Do you have any name or numbers for me? I found out that my insurance won't cover any birthing centers at all. Thanks for the advice ladies!

well I don't know about this area because I had trouble finding one here too...doesn't mean there isn't one but I couldn't find one...however, I use the midwives group out of harris methodist hospital downtown. I'm about halfway through and I love them so far! Friendly hospital staff...great and helpful midwives. They are located in an office building next to the hospital and it's not hard to get to them..there is a parking garage with validated free parking. it takes me about 25 min to get there from Arlington. They are backed with an ob and my insurance covers them. Everything I heard so far has Harris being natural birth friendly and has water births as an option.

I have to second Family Birth Services. They have been there since the 70's and ladies all over the country come down to do thier training with Helen (owner) and the other midwives. I had my daughter at the birth center and my son at home with one of their midwives. We have a friend who has used them twice also. They are a free standing birth center so the insurance would not cover it, BUT the cash price at the birth center is sometimes around the same or even cheaper than your copays/deductible depending on your insurance. Tell them the Meekers said hi!

I used the midwife group at Harris Methodist, too. For both my boys - incredible. Yes, they do deliver in a hosptial, but I did it drug free and minimal monitoring. Totally covered by my insurance and just incredible all around! Worth the drive:)

Additionally, a friend used midwives in Dallasif that feel closer to you - There is a 1-800 texas health resources doctor hotline and ask them which midwives are practicing in your area. . . .

Good luck and congratuations on #3!

There are two birth centers in Grand Prarie- Family Birth Services and Special Beginnings. If they can't help you, I bet they will know who can.

Happy birthing!
