I have to agree with previous posts. The dyson is the best. It is amazing how much it picks up. It is a little pricy, but watch for deals or try Bed Bath and Beyond and use one of their 20% off coupons.
Can anyone out there recommend a good vacuum? After I had my kids I have become a clean freak. I have hardwood floors through out my entire house and now I am moving into a house that is completely carpet, white carpet at that, and I have a black dog that sheds worse than anything I have ever seen. Any recommendation of a good vacuum or vacuum to stay away from will be helpful. Thank you.
Thank you all!! I was leaning towards a dyson, but didn't know which one it sounds like the animal has it! I can't wait to buy my new vaccum.

You should try a dyson animal. Talk about suction power. I have 3 boys-- a 6 year old, a 2 year old and an 8 year old black lab retriever. I know what you mean about dog hair. The dyson sucks it all up. I have 2 to prove it. One upstairs and 1 downstairs.
I hear you there!! I have a black border collie-chow mix, She leaves puppies worth of hair all over my light beige carpet! In the two years I've had her I've gone through 3 vacuums that couldn't handle the job. Now I have a kenmore progressive 300 from sears! This thing works so well that when I'm done vacuuming you wouldn't even know I have a dog! Plus it doesn't get clogged with her long hair, or mine, or my girls! It even gets the stoborn shorthairs from my cat out of the furnature. As a side note you would have to plan ahead for replacement bags, they don't keep the right size in stock at sears so you need to order them.
I bought a Dyson last year and I LOVE IT!!! You would not believe all the stuff it pulls up.. Its very strong..I also love that the canister is clear so you can see if you vacuumed up a toy..lol. Before I bought the Dyson, I had one that I got thru a rep.. Very similar to a Kirby or Rainbow.. and it broke 1 yr later and they didnt want to help me when it was time to get it fixed... But in the last year since I have had the Dyson, I have called them a few times for vacuuming help, tricks... and they have been great.. I know its an expensive vacuum and we ended up getting the one with all the bells and whistles too (normally $549) but we got it on sale at Sears and it was over $100 off, got a $25 sears gift card and came with an extra set of tools that you normally would have to buy seperate... So there are some good deals out there for them.. Good luck!!!
I love my Rainbow vacuuum. Some one asked the same question a while back, try looking for it there were alot of suggestions on it.
You can't go wrong with a Dyson. We have purchased many vacuums in our house and none compare to the Dyson. Others wear out quickly, don't seem to pick up as well and/or get clogged, especially if you have pets. Dyson was also great about replacing an attachment that we broke. The Dyson is well worth the expense.
We maybe can help each other. It's the opposite with me. I just move into a house with hardwood floors and they are getting scratch up all ready. How do you take care of them? To your question, good vaccums are hard to find.I have went through several. I got fed up buying them. The best one is the Kirby but they are so expensive I'm talking 1200 or so but, everything you need from a shampoo machine to lent remover is there.N ow it's one that comes on tv that I heard works wonders Orbeck or something like that, that runs about 300. I think that still is outrageous. Then their's the Dirt Devil bagless runs about 159. I hope this has help you somewhat. Just with the dirt devil the hair might clog it.
I love my Dyson! I have the purple animal DC-15 "the ball" model. Very easy to maneuver, it zips right around furniture. It will do carpet and bare floors. Came with a lots of attachments. I also got it at Bed Bath and Beyond and used a 20% off coupon.
I have never used a dyson, but I love my Panasonic.
RAINBOW! It uses water in a basin attached to the unit to collect dust, dirt, hair, yuck. NOTHING can get past the water, unlike even the best filters. Filters block particles, and air goes through it. Think about it...there are the smallest of particles that ARE going through the filter. Those are the ones that settle on your carpet and furniture later on. Buy one that's most recommended by these other ladies, paying attention to the return policy. Then get a Rainbow demonstration and you'll see what the Rainbow picks up that your brand new machine missed. And it works on Hardwood floors too!
This might be out of the way but the Hoover outlet at 12 mile and evergreen in southfield has always been good to me. they just came out with a new vacuum that is better then that 1500 dollar kirby. so you might want to check them out. (plus they were really nice to me and didn't treat me like I was stupid for being a women. you know how men can be sometimes. I give that store and A for respect!)
Good luck hunting!
White carpet + black dog = Kirby! Kirby! Kirby! Also...since the white carpet belonged to someone else first...a Kirby can actually get all the dirt out through regular vacuuming. Without a Kirby, you will actually be living with someone else's dirt!

My vote is for ORECK. I love my lime green colored Oreck. Best vacuum yet. It is so light weight I can carry it with one hand up my stairs. I use it at least once a day so I can ditto the clean freak status. My kids are 3 & 7 so the trail of crumbs seems to follow them.
Good Luck

i would go with the oreck or the dyson both are great
If you have the budget for it, I highly recommend the Dyson Ultimate Animal Vacuum (DC17). I have one and I have 2 kids and 2 cats. It sucks the cat hair right off the carpet and doesn't lose suction unless you accidentally suck up something too big which clogs the hose. It is extremely easy to use and required very little set up (attach hose and it is ready to go).
It has a 5 year warranty and there is no need to replace filters. All the filters on the vacuum are washable. They recommend washing them in cold water every 6 months and then allowing them to dry completely before putting them back in the vacuum.
It uses a cannister rather than a vacuum bag and the canister is terribly easy to empty (just push a button).
I obviously think very highly of my vacuum. I think the vacuum is worth every penny that we paid for it.
My carpets have not been this clean ever, at least not since they were brand new which was long before I moved into this house.
I do highly recommend any Dyson vacuum, but I particularly like the DC17 Animal vacuum.
I agree with Katie,
Kirby's rock! In addition to being able to vacuum, you can use it on your kitchen/bathroom floor, your couch and chair AND shampoo with it!
Actually, my vacuum stinks!! But I have a good pet fur trick. To get it to release from the couch/furniture, first spray with Static Guard (prob. any static spray) then vacuum it off. The spray breaks the cling and the fur actually comes off of the couch instead of just getting pushed around. As far as vacuum cleaners go, I've heard that Dyson is the best, that's what I will buy next.

I have to agree with some of the other ladies, Dyson is the best vacuum I've ever used! Before we bought ours a friend brought hers over and first we vacuumed with our old vacuum and then went over again with the Dyson..I was amazed (and totally grossed out) by what STILL came out of the carpet. Also, we have 2 cats and a dog and a friend of ours always used to get really sneezy with allergies when he was here but since we got our Dyson he said he can breath much better! I'll never go back to a regular vacuum again!
I LOVE my Dyson. I have the purple 'Animal' and it's great for carpet and even hardwood. I also have a 80lb extra-HAIRY Golden Retriever and my Dyson just eats up the hair it is amazing. It's a bit pricey but I got mine at Bed, Bath & Beyond and was able to use my 20%off coupon and it saved me quite a bit. It's a great investment. Hope this helps.
Hi T.!!!
My husband and I purchased a Dyson recently and we absolutely LOVE it!!! Although it is more costly than alot of vaccuums, it is well eorth it - it has a 5 year warranty on everything except the filter. It picks up everything and has an attachment for wooden floors. It is so easy to use and - all I can say is the last few vaccuums I owned seemed to only last about 1 year! Good luck!!!
We really like our Electrolux. It was what Consumers Reports recommended. It is cheaper than a Dyson, but more expensive than what you would find at KMart or Target.
We have a vacuum curse at our house. Every vacuum cleaner we have ever bought breaks. So, we broke down, did the research and invested in the Electrolux. When we bought ours, they only had a display model left. We got a great discount and bought it anyway. It was missing one piece. I e-mailed the company and they sent it to me immediately. Then, six months later, a wheel fell off. I called the company and they sent me a brand new vacuum cleaner! It was great! So, even if our vacuum curse continues at least I know that the company stands behind their product. Good luck! Let us know what happens!
Dyson brand animal vac....if you have pets make sure you get the one designed for animals - I have it and LOVE how it picks up the FUR of my three cats and one dog!
