Need Advice Buying a New Vacuum Cleaner - Dyson or Kenmore? or Something Else?

I am in the market for a new vacuum cleaner and I think I have narrowed it down but I would like advice. Consumer Reports favors the Kenmore Intuition canister, which is quite pricey, but in general it seems like there are more reviews out there favoring Dyson, especially the "Animal" model. I have two dogs, one a lab who sheds black fine hair like crazy. I also have stairs so I don't want something too unwieldy or heavy. I have both carpet and bare floor, more floor than carpet. I wonder if I really need to get the more expensive "Animal" or if the cheaper models of Dyson are adequate. Or, if you have another brand of vacuum you absolutely love I am all ears.

GarryVac.com ....cheaper and lighter wght than the Dyson and fits under chairs and sofas which the others dont. Also has life time supply of free bags so you dont dump out the canister and all the junk flies in the air. Also has a lifetime warranty for no hassle replacement if you have a problem. And, the suction rating is better than the others. I think they are also running a special where if you buy it you get the free steam cleaner for the tile floors. It sells for 200.00 vs 600.
Good luck and enjoy!

I have a Dyson (ball model) and have had it for over 5 years. I love it! It has gone through 3 dogs worth of hair and gets the job done. I questioned the "animal" model and decided against it. I would recommend the ball models though for easy "get around". So convenient! They now have a lighter weight model, but mine really isn't that heavy. If you have stairs, you might look into the lighter of the models. Good luck and happy "using"!

Without pets (but in a very dust prone environment adjacent to highways), we have been pleased with our 6 year old Kenmore Powermate vacuum. I've admired the newer version but ours is great, no complaints! The bag offers filtration, along with 2 other filters which don't need changing as often.
As a canister vac, I like how it stores easiler under the bed
and has attachments for floor vacuuming, dusters and crevices. It has a small spinning (the "powermate") adaption which is great for couch cushions.
Just talking about it makes me want to pull it out!
Anyhow, the point is to buy an expensive vacuum that will last you years and one you can readily get bags for, or serviced. Do not go with bagless!

Hi,
I have a canister Electrolux and love it! It is light and quiet and the first vacuum I have owned for several years without buying a new one on a yearly basis. My parents have the dyson and do not like it at all. My dad is always wrestling with it while cursing at it. I think he finds it cumbersome and all of the attachment annoying. We have a good deal of wood floor and that is why i like a light canister as it gets under things pretty easily.

I haven't bought a vacuum in years, but our town has a sew and vac store that's been here for something like 50 years. When I was in there a while ago, it was literally wall to wall with broken Dyson's... I mean, there had to be at least 30 of them in there. And he said it's the one that breaks the most, and that he recommends the least.

On the other hand, I have friends that when their Mother died, the only thing they all fought over was the Oreck!! If I were to purchase a new vacuum, hands down, I'd buy an Oreck - no question at all.

Hope this helps!

Hi A., Having owned many vacuum cleaners over 40 years of cleaning, I feel you can never go wrong with the Sears models - they are efficient and need very few repairs ever! I have also been thrilled with my Orek which is lightweight and does an awesome job. I keep my Orek downstairs (it is an upright) where I have wall-to-wall basic carpeting - not plush. Then I keep my canister vac upstairs where it is mostly floors with some carpeting. I love the Sears models (more the top models) and also now love the Miele canister that I now have that is particularly good on dog hair. Hope this is helpful. E. Taft

We had an Electrolux for 10 years, and I thought it was fine. Recently our son was diagnosed with asthma, so we went looking for a vacuum with a hepa filter. We chose Miele - expensive, but hands down the BEST vacuum I've ever used.

A rainbow is the way to go! Pricy but well worth it in my opinion. You will never need to buy another vacuum in your lif etime. They are pricey and the salesman can be talked down in price! Or have a demo and then get on e off ebay.

You can buy cheaper vacuums, but the Dyson is the best. We had Kirby and Kenmore and Shark, but according to Leo's Vacuum Shop the Dyson is the best. Just don't get the "Ball" Dyson. It seems to have more problems that the regular Dyson. The Dyson also seems to have all the perks I needed. Good on carpets and can be disconnected to a hand vac too. Love it!

Hi A.,

If you can afford to make the investment, the Oreck vacumn is the best, I had my first one for 15 yrs. and just replaced it recently. They have some great deals but are good people to work with and the machine is only 8 pounds so it's easy to carry up and down stairs too.
I am sold on Oreck...

I have a Dyson DC17(not the animal)and I get excited every time I have to vacuum! Seriously, that sounds lame, but I've had so many bad vacuums in the past that when I bought the dyson, it was like heaven. I don't have any pets, but I have a lot of carpet, and some flooring as well and the vacuum does my whole house like a dream. i've never owned a vacuumw that has so much suction power that you can see the carpet lifting from the floor! It's amazing what collects in the canister after a few days of not vacuuming. I was very hesitant to spend that obscene amount of money on a vacuum cleaner, but it was totally worth it in the end! I love my Dyson.

I heard the Dyson is not worth the money. I have the Bissel Healthy home, it was around $200-$250. It works great, it is bagless and has a hepa filter.

M.- SAHM and WAHM and loving it!

I have the Bissell Pet Eraser - it was cheap ($130 at BIs) and it works. We have a black lab too so there's hair all over. And dirt. I couldn't bring myself to spend the $$ for an Oreck or Dyson.

I don't know about those brands in particular, but I can tell you that we hated the "bagless" type vacuum cleaner we had a few years ago. You know the kind that makes a little tornado in the canister, and then you have to take the canister outside and dump it? The seal was never tight enough, and the dirt and dust that you were trying to get out of your house would fly out into the air - yuck. And when we brought it outside to dump it, what a mess, and the filter would get all nasty and clogged, and we had to rinse it all the time and wait for it to dry. Horrible set up. Don't get a bagless kind - just my two cents. Good luck on your search.
