School Suggestions Anyone?

I was hoping for some school suggestions for my 9 year old son who will be entering 5th grade next year. He is a very bright child with ADHD and emotionally immature. I recently moved to Dallas close to Midway and Royal and put him at St. Alcuin for 4th grade and it has not worked out at all! It has been so bad that for the 1st time he does not want to go to school and the school thinks he needs a psychological evaluation. Although he has always been a challenge because of his ADHD, he was easily accommodated and I had never had any problems with him in school, before this. He is artistic, very shy, and not particularly athletic. For many reasons he has been in a different school every year since kindergarten and this I must stop! I am looking for the right fit for the duration. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions for schools private or public.

What can I do next?

Have you looked at Fairhill or Winston yet? Both are pretty close by. I live at Royal/Marsh and have friends with kids in both of these schools who have been very happy with the results.

Good luck, I hope you can find a good fit for him.

I'm no expert, but have you looked into Shelton's? They specialize in teaching students similar to your son. A neighbor of mine has her son there and he is thriving after struggling at other schools. She says it is a real answer to prayer. It wouldn't hurt to check it out.

Good luck.

My good friend's son has ADHD and he has been attending Oak Hill Academy since 1st grade and they have been very happy with it. It is on Midway near Walnut Hill. They also tried Shelton for kindergarten and although it is a great school, it turned out not to be a good fit for him. Good luck.

I have 2 kids at Shelton, and we LOVE it. My son is ADHD with mild dyslexia. Call right away to get the ball rolling, because contracts for returning students are due this week. Contracts will go out to new students in the next couple of weeks. If your son needs some support, but not as much as Shelton offers, you could also look at Westwood Montessori or Parish. I know several parents whose kids either progressed enough not to need Shelton, or didn't quite need Shelton, who have been very happy at Parish.

Good Luck,
S.

The Shelton School here in Dallas is supposed to be one of the biggest and best of its kind in the US I believe. It is at Hillcrest and Arapaho. The phone # is ###-###-####. They also give you listing of other appropriate schools in the area if they aren't the right fit, so I would start there.

You are very lucky to be in Dallas! Dallas has some wonderful schools for kids with learning differences and ADHD. Kids who struggle and manage through often get a low tank by 5th grade. Depending on your child's personality I would suggest you look at The Shelton School and The Fairhill School. There will probably be a waiting list so don't delay. You may be able to get in for next year if you look now. Shelton is larger.

If you can afford it I would strongly encourage you to take this leap. These schools understand. My personal experience was with Fairhill. My son was very much the way you described. Public school ruined his self esteem. When we switched him he began to get it back! He is a self-confident college student now.
