My kids are a bit older, so I don't remember a whole lot of the exact details. But I do know that docs recommend no more than 2 8oz cups of whole milk per day. If they drink more than that, they are not getting enough nutrients through food because their bellies are full! I do remember around 1yr my boys both switched from 2 naps to one. But I can't remember an exact routine! They also recommend switching to sippy cups around 1 year of age. For my first son it was no problem. My second son, though, took quite a while to really be totally weaned from bottles. Good luck!

My daughter turned 1 a week ago and we went to her 1 yr appt last week. She is completely off baby food, has ben for some time now and after her appt I took her bottles away (that day) and switched her to whole milk. She seems to be fine with the change. Our pedi said that a healthy and avg 1 yr old should get 12-16 oz of whole milk a day. I had to debate in my head how to break it up since I also took her bottle. Here is our schedule and what works for us.

6:30-wake up and breakfast (usually regular oatmeal with 1/2 a mashed banana in it with a sippy cup of 4oz milk)
7:30-she goes back down for about 2 hrs
10:00-small snack (generally other 1/2 of banana and 4 oz milk), then I go work out and she plays in the kid's club at the gym
12:30-lunch (grilled cheese with turkey in it or ham and swiss, something of that sort, plus a sippy with water)
1:00-nap
2:30-snack (yobaby yogurt or a pear with cheese, avocado etc )
5:00ish-dinner (pretty much always a modified version or everything we eat-fish, shredded chicken, acorn squash, asparagus, couple of baked sweet potato "fries," etc, 4 oz milk plus sippy of water on hand)
5:45-bath
no later than 6:30-brush her teeth, then bed

This is generally our daily schedule. Usually if we have play dates they're in the morning so I have time to fix dinner and make sure she gets a nap in the afternoon. Since she doesn't go to day care I have tried to make more play dates for her, and me lol. I have been reluctant to join a group since I have several other first time sahm friends. I am not super strict with the schedule but by now it's basically a habit or routine for us. Let me know if you want meal suggestions or ideas. I of course would love to hear yours as I don't want her to get bored! :)

Hi there...I am a stay at home mom of a little boy who just turned one. We went to his 1 year appt last week and I specifically asked the doctor about the bottle issue. He said that the deal behind bottles is if parents let their babies fall asleep with the bottle because it basically causes tooth decay. I told him sometimes my little guy needs a bottle cause it helps soothe him and he said that is just fine. He also said to give whole milk (until they are two) up to 24 oz a day. Here is our schedule:

8-8:30 wake up and I breastfeed him in the morning
9-9:30 I feed him breakfast. Usually he eats 1/2 of a banana with yogurt or oatmeal. Sometimes I add other fruit in the mix in season (berries, kiwi). I give him a sippy cup of water and he drinks a few oz. And on the weekend sometimes we make pancakes (his favorite).
10-11 play time, sometimes I run errands, sometimes I go to the gym with him
11 Milk before nap. Usually 4-6 oz of whole milk. My little guy sometimes gets distracted with drinking milk during the day so we'll snuggle while he drinks.
11-12:30 or 1 - nap
12:30 lunch. I always try to give him one fruit and one veggie. He loves peas, sweet potatoes (I still mash them, freeze them in ice trays - its easier for serving up), applesauce, pears, berries, peaches. I also give him a main course of grilled cheese, egg, pasta or chicken dish.
1 - play again, run errands, I try to get cleaning and dinner started.
3- try to get him to drink 6 oz of milk
4-4:30 or 5 - short nap
5:30 - dinner. Just like lunch for the most part. I always try to offer him what we are eating too, but sometimes its too spicy or he just rejects (like salads). Usually with dinner if he hasnt had a lot of milk I offer him milk with dinner too.
6:30- bath time
7-8 - play time, reading
8:30 - Bedtime. I breastfeed him one more time, but I am going to soon be giving this feeding up. I dont think he needs it.

Good luck and really I think each baby is different and you should be able to see his queues of when he is full.

They don't drink as much milk when they get off the bottle. We just give milk during meal times only and water throughout the day. Just make sure they get calcium other ways. We do lots of cheese for snacks. We even do cheese at breakfast. That is such an easy way to get calcium. Both of my kids love cheese; especially my one year old. You can also feed them yogart for breakfast. As far as a sched. My one year was weaned into taking only one nap; however, she is in daycare. Some kids still need two naps at this age; I am not sure if you are at one or two naps. With one nap we do an early lunch - wake-up around 7am, snack at 9am and lunch at 10:45am then nap until around 1pm or so. Then snack after nap; then another small snack b/f dinner if we eat later that day; however, we usually have dinner b/w 6-7pm on weekdays and b/w 5pm-6pm on weekends. Good luck!

I forgot breakfast - we do breakfast at wake-up - around 7am on weekends and 6am during the weekday.

Hi there! Is your baby already eating table food? If so, that shouldn't change any. My daughter got bored with jarred baby food, so she's been on table food since about 10 months (she's 18 months now). I have an issue with her being under weight, so I try to limit the milk & juice intake. Milk is only 18-24 oz a day and 100% juice is very limited (and, I dilute that with 50% water/50% juice). Here's a rough breakdown of our schedule... breakfast (packet of oatmeal usually) and about 6-8 oz of milk. About 2 hours later have some water (or diluted juice) & some crackers or cheerio's. Lunch is usually left overs from the night before, but to give you an idea of portion sizes, protein is probably equal to about 2 chicken nuggets, veggie is equal to about 4 broccoli florets or 10 green beans, fruit is equal to about 4 pineapple chunks or applesauce cup. She also gets 6-8 oz of milk when done with lunch. Another snack after she takes an afternoon nap of about 2 hours and then dinner (similar to lunch). I always give milk after she eats to make sure she fills up on the food first.

Of course, this is what works for us, and each baby is different. Your doctor should be able to give you some dietary paperwork as well when you go in for the 12 month check-up! Hope this helps (at least somewhat!) and Good Luck!

Hi A.,
I'm expecting baby number 2 anyday now and have enjoyed reading "Along the Infant Way". Its part of a series that helps guide us from infancy to childhood. You can look at it on www.gfi.org. Also, Babywise has a successor called Toddlerwise, then Preschoolwise, then Child wise. You can most likely find those at your local bookstore. There are easily referenced for your specific questions as well as other topics dealing with your baby. Good luck!

hey A.! your posts were interesting and i wanted to write to you mainly to remember all babies schedules are different! i thought i'd share w/you an example of my 13 mos. baby boy schedule, if you're interested: :)
6 a.m - wake up - 7 oz milk
8 a.m. - daycare
9-9:30 - breakfast - cereal w/fruit
11-11:30 - lunch - w/2 oz water (approx.)
3 p.m. - snack (cheerios, etc.) and 8 oz. milk
5:30 p.m. - pick up from daycare
6 p.m. - suppertime
6:30 p.m. - bathtime
7-8 p.m. - play some then bedtime
that is exactly how today went for us! anyway, i'm sure you've already got a schedule going on w/you and your baby, maybe you just don't realize it. i like to look for patterns and i'm kinda a nerd so i like to write things down to see what he's like from day to day, especially on the weekends when i have him all day to myself. even though your baby's almost a year and my baby's a little over a year, i honestly still try to ensure plenty of milk because they are still BABIES and they still need the vitamins/nutrients it provides. a lot of people would probably think i'm a bad mama for this, but i still give him baby food. it's just that i know the gerber baby food has what he needs and i know for a fact that what i eat is not good for him - ramen noodles! lol!
anyway, good luck sweetie! :)

mother of 5 here...As for schedule...What ever suits you and the family is the optimum here...By now the kiddo should be on 3 major meals along w/ family and something to eat before bed. The milk deal? Is he/she eating enough to satisfy the tummy? If so, you're already doing fine. By now meals should be strained food and milk. Just keep the tummy happy. Later, V.

first of all, I highly recommend you get him off the bottle and start the sippee cup if you haven't already. After one year old, it is bad for their teeth, along with alot of other problems they get for being on the bottle too long. MIne ate the toddler foods and drank about 3-4 sippee cups of 2% milk at that age. Just be careful not to let him drink too much milk as it could start making him put on too much weight. You may want to check with his pediatrician and get some of his/her advice also. Hope this helps.

Back when I used to be a SAHM I kept my kids on a pretty regular schedule. They woke fairly early, between 6 and 7 which was fine for the rest of the house was up and around. I had breakfast to them by 8, with a drink, then a couple hours later, a refill on the drink. Lunch was normally between 11 and 12 with another drink. Nap time followed immediately after lunch and by two or three, depending on the day, they were up again and got to have a small snack and another drink. Supper was generally around 6 with yet another drink, then bed time at 8. So yes, I would say that your child should get the same amount. I started with sippy cups shortly after they turned 1. While my kids still dink mostly milk at this point, I would also offer other things like water or juice. My family has a long history of milk allergies so I do not push the milk thing very hard. My son drinks soy because he has such a problem with cow's milk. Remember also that there are other sorces of calcium so the child does not always have to drink milk. It really is up to you as to how much milk you let your child drink.

I don't have my schedule in front of me, but I do remember my Pedi saying the child should take no more than 20 ounces of whole milk per day (he told me the reasoning, but I forgot). I would ask your Pedi...just call and talk to the nurse. I continued to do formula until 18 months...so by then, or consumption had tapered down quite a bit.
