Sales Tax Holidays

Ok, I'm I the only one bothered by this. In CT, we have a "tax exemption" week in August for back to school clothing sales. All the stores and newspapers promote it to the hilt. Last year our local paper had a huge front page story of a woman shopping at Old Navy and she was saving so much by waiting to go shopping this particular week. Here's the thing that makes me angry... she saved nothing. Articles of clothing (each article) under $50 are tax exempt all year long. For the special week it goes up to articles of clothing under $300. To the best of my knowledge Old Navy doesn't even have clothing priced over $50. Also, I don't know of anyone who buys an article of clothing (other than footwear, a business suit, special occassion, or a winter coat) that cost $50. I just don't like being deceived.

What can I do next?

It does not affect me because I don't generally buy clothes that cost more than $50 a piece, but I have family members with teenage girls that regularly purchase shoes and clothing that does qualify (75-150 each item). So, for them, it will be a small savings. Old Navy, however, seems to just be using it as a marketing ploy.

VA has the 'tax exempt' weekend where all clothes $100 or less are tax free. All that really means though is that you get a 5-10% discount depending on where you shop.

I just went to Kohls, they are having a big 40-50% sale, with a 15% email coupon... hmm. Let me do the math...

I am in Texas. It is a game for retail establishments.

Really, How dumb are we????

Tax free weekend, hello in TX is 8,25%. We mistakenly went to the mall on "tax free" weekend...you would have thought it was Christmas. NO parking anywhere. We figured it out.

Everyone thinks they are getting such a great deal but really???

Stores have their mark ups... then deals.....then no tax.. NOBODY is benefits except the store sales. Gimmick galore. Gees, you do better with coupons from the newspaper.

Go buy wisely with what you can afford (CASH) and be done.

Don't buy into the game that is advertised.

We have one of those here it's a weekend and it's only useful if you're buying something like a computer, etc. Something high dollar.
I just avoid the stores at all cost that weekend.

I know what TF is talking about. I'm in Texas too. My friend has 4 kids and REFUSES to go shopping on "tax free weekend." She says that deals are better during the regular day. "I'd rather get a shirt at 50% off plus tax than buy it full price and then get 8.25% off."

In Texas, there is no dollar limit that I know of. But sounds like Old Navy is trying to appleal to the stupid who know nothing about the tax free weekend there in CT. They just want those people to come in the door and feel like they got a good deal.
