Does anyone have any referrals to a "Green" carpet cleaner? I really want to get our carpets cleaned before my 5 month old begins to crawl but I really don't want to use harsh chemicals.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We actually decided to wait a little while until our 2 year old is fully potty trained before cleaning our carpets! I did however, decide to go with Vinegar, Borax, and hot water in a steam cleaner. I have been cleaning up potty messes with vinegar and cleaning my kitchen floor with it and so far I love it. Thanks for all your suggestions.

There are companies that use water (steam)...I remember calling companies a number of years ago and learning this...but I don't have any names. Sorry!

I don't know of any specific companies, but you could rent a steam cleaner yourself and use an environmentally friendly carpet cleaning product (like Seventh Generation) in the machine.

If you have your own steam cleaner or you rent one, you can use white distilled vinegar instead of a cleaner. Just test an area to make sure the vinegar doesn't stain the carpet (it shouldn't). Vinegar is not only a great and safe cleaner it also gets rid of any odors in the carpet and the room!

Good luck

I have had great results with white vinegar and borax. I use it in my own steam cleaner. Baking soda is a wonderful cleaner too. I was given a website with homemade cleaners that are safer alternatives that you might want to check out:

I use Shaklee's Basic H2 in my carpet cleaner. It's very concentrated so I only use about 1/2 tsp and mix it with the water. It is safe and it has many other uses. You can purchase it on the internet at www.shaklee.net/dudinyak.

I actually like to use whatever laundry detergent that you are comfortable using on your clothes. Dilute it down and use it in a carpet cleaning machine.
