Rice Krispies Treats---Where Did I Go Wrong??

Hi Moms,
I followed the recipe exactly how it's said to on the box:
--3 Tablespoons butter
--4 cups of small marshmallows
--6 cups of Rice krispies cereal.

I followed the directions on how to heat, mix and let cool and they just turned out gross! : )
They're very chewy and sticky and they just kinda fall apart when you pick them up.
They look nothing like the kind on the box, mine were also more skinny in width.

I'm not sure what happened here, this seems to be such an easy recipe and I'm not sure if I need more marshmallows or more rice krispies.

Any tips are greatly appreciated!

So What Happened?

Hi Moms,
It makes sense after reading all of the responses that my problem was most likely the butter. We use a very soft creamy butter and I'll be using Parkay next time around. We used the name brand products for the marshmallows and rice krispies so I'm pretty sure it had to be the butter.....well hopefully next time it wont be a disaster.

Thank you so much for taking the time to help! : )

Add more rice crispies.

It's trial and error on the amount of Crispies you put in the mix. Too much they're dry as a bone...too little...they fall apart, are mushy or sticky.

And yes...stick butter works best for baking.

If the butter is already soft...it won't harden as it cools.

I'm sincerely hoping I didn't just repeat what everyone else said...

I'm at work and didn't have time to read all the responses.

If so...sorry if I repeated...

Smiles to you.

I have issues if I use generic marshmallows so I stick with kraft.

Home made ones will almost never be as solid, compact, and less sticky as the pre-made ones. Remember, they use heavy machinery to mix and form those. Unless you're a body builder with great upper body strength, they're bound to be crumbly. To me, though, that's part of the joy of home made ones. Plus, eating the homemade ones probably have a lot less chemical preservatives (if that's something you care about).

You might also want to try pressing them into the pan harder. I use wadded up plastic wrap so the goo doesn't stick to my fingers. Also, line your pan with plastic wrap before adding the krispie mix. When it cools completely you just turn the pan over, remove the plastic wrap then cut into even squares.

This happened when I used Smart Balance rather than stick butter... my pecan pie was also runny :-(

Good Luck!

Do make sure you are using real butter, even margarine tends to be more greasy. Then, if it is too sticky and falling apart, you need to add more cereal. I do not use imitaion cereal, and it needs to be fresh cereal too, or it can be chewy to eat. Hmm, I do tend to use more marshmallows than it calls for though, GOod luck, I am sure you were frustrated, but try again. ~A.~

OK, here is what my mom says the trick is and it works 99% of the time for me! When you are melting the butter (we use Parkay marg.) and marshmallows take them off of the heat before they are completely melted and just keep stirring until they are all melted and then stir in your rice krispies! It really does make all the difference. Let me know if you try it and if it works for you??

I have had this happen especially if it is humid outside... or if I didn't use real butter. Try putting them in the fridge and see if they firm up
