Rice Crispy Treats

For something so easy I don't know how I screw it up but somehow my rice crispy treats don't "set." It is like the only way I can get them to set is to leave them out a day to make them stale and hard...before that they crumble and fall apart instead of being a solid mass. Any idea what I am doing wrong??

What can I do next?

Real butter.
Melt marshmallows on low heat. Do not use marshmallow creme.
Brand of cereal is irrelevant.

don't mix the rice krispies in until ALL of the marshmallows and butter are melted and gooey....

make sure you are using Rice Krispies and not a store brand? I tried using a store brand once and they sucked....I use the small marshmallows not the big ones....

DO NOT melt the mashmellows on HIGH. Do them slooow.

It took me YEARS to figure out why they would get so hard. The sugar crystalized--DUH!

is it possible you're using some type of "spread" instead of butter or margarine? Some margarines contain more water than others, and some of the products called "spreads" are not suitable for anything other than spreading on a piece of bread. You might try making them with real buttter and see if that makes a difference.

If they are crumbling and falling apart you don't have enough marshmallow goo in them. Too much goo is bad too. I never make them according to the recipe but instead make the goo and add rice crispies until it looks right. Like when you stir it everything should be connect with stringy goo threads.

Butter, not margarine.
Brand has nothing to do with it.

Use butter not margarine. Some of the margarines don't allow the treats to set up properly.

I don't know for sure, but maybe too much margarine to the amount of marshmallows?

Here's my recipe and they always turn out great! 5 cups of rice crispies, 1/4 cup of real butter and a package of mini marshmallows.

Which recipe are you using? I always used the peanut butter recipe. You need to stick the peanut butter ones in the fridge.

I've never that this problem, just the opposite that they set too fast. My guess is that you may be using too high heat.

Use very low heat. Melt the butter, then add the marshmellows, stirring frequently. After all the marshmellows have melted remove from heat and add the cereal.
