Hi all. I'm pregnant with my third baby and am considering switching to midwife Holly Grooms at Caring for Women in Denton. Does anyone have experience with this clinic in general, and more specifically, with Holly? I would like a natural childbirth, and have heard this practice and hospital are more supportive of it.

THANKS!!

Kim

So What Happened?

THANK YOU everyone for your honest opinions and reviews! This totally helped me in my decision. I've actually already toured Inanna and it was on my list of possibilities. After reading these responses, I've gone ahead and scheduled a prenatal appointment there and I think I will be very happy.

THANKS!!

K

Hi Kim!

DRMC is behind the times in its handling of labor and delivery. I had a dear friend who wanted to do natural childbirth and planned intentionally for it. Her doctor said he was supportive of it, but once she got to DRMC in labor, the situation was nothing short of a nightmare. Her situation got so bad with the nurses that one of the nurses hand wrote a note and forced her to sign that it saying that it would be her fault if her baby died because she was not wanting pitocin and an epidural. I do not share this story to scare you but to make public to as many women as possible the terrible practices within their labor and delivery department. It is shameful.

Another dear friend used CFW for her 1st delivery. She waited so long to go to the hospital because she was afraid of going to early. She ended up getting to the hospital and discovered she was at a ten so she had a quick and easy natural delivery. However, her midwife was not able to make it in time so she commented that next time they should induce my friend so she could be there for the delivery. That comment along with a couple of others sheds insight into what Susan said about the midwives being more "medically oriented." This is just my personal opinion, but knowing what I know about DRMC and about their midwives being more medically oriented, they seem to me to be more for show to try and drive in a larger population of women rather than truly being committed and supportive of natural childbirth.

My same friend who had her 1st natural childbirth at DRMC, switched to Inanna for her second birth. I have had many friends who have delivered with the midwives at Inanna, and every single story has been one of praise and highest respect for the midwives there. I personally see Dr. Cummings, who is a phenomenal man and doctor, but I have considered the idea of switching to Inanna with my 2nd because of all the amazing things I have heard as well as knowing from my 1st birth what I need to help me be successful in natural delivery.

God's Grace to you,

Lisa :)

I went to Caring for Women until the 35th week of my pregnancy and then (after a lot of research and enlightment) switched to Innana Birth and Women's Care in Denton. The C-Section rates at Denton Regional (and through Caring for Women) are very high and there is no guarantee Holly will actually deliver your baby. Although the staff was friendly and professional, I did not find them particuarlly supportive of natural birth. I was very impressed with Inanna's care and support before, during, and after giving birth. As a first time Mom, I had a 7lb12oz baby girl within about three hours of active labor. I had to have an episionomy and then 3rd degree tare (only 3% of the women at Inanna have to have one), but Jean (my midwife) did an excellent job of sewing me up . . . I have almost no long term effects of it. Hope this helps!

I'm actually pregnant with my first child right now, and I've been going to Caring for Women (specifically Esther Fairchild) for a long while now. I love the practice and the people in it and will probably be looking at one of their midwives for the delivery. I know that historically people prefer Presbyterian over Denton Regional, but I also know DRMC has updated their facilities a lot, so I'm going to keep an open mind. I hope that whatever you choose, your experience is beautiful!

Hi Kim! I am in Argyle too! I have seen Holly for two of my three pregnancies. She is a wonderful midwife. A little more on the medical side of midwifery though. Sometimes that is just what people want and need so it's really up to you on what you are looking for in having a midwife. Holly is very supportive of natural childbirth. As I said, I used her for two of my pregnancies. Well, actually 1 of my pregnancies and then a little over half of my second pregnancy before I swtiched to homebirth with a midwife who does homebirths. Holly was very supportive of my switching to homebirth though. She knew it's what I truly desired and was happy for me that I found that option to be what was best for me. I would not say, however, that DRMC is a very natural childbirth friendly hospital. Not in my experience anyway. Don't get me wrong, I've had two of my babies there but I had to work very hard to have my natural childbirths at DRMC. I am a Doula and I've noticed through the years and my experience that Denton Presby is a little more on the natural childbirth friendly side than DRMC. Have you looked into any practices that catch babies over there? One practice in particular I've had a lot of clients use and have great successes in natural childbirth is Dr. Cummings' practice. Many people say he is a midwife in disguise! Also, I'm not sure if you know this but a new Out of Hospital Birth Center is about to open up right here in Argyle! It's called All About Babies Birth Center. It's owned and run by three Certified Professional Midwives. This is going to be a really great option for those of us who live in this area. Then there is Inanna Birth and Women's Care in Denton. Have you heard of this birth center? I used the midwife, Jean Sala, who owns this birth center for my third baby's homebirth and she is a truly gifted and wonderful midwife. She is a Certified Nurse Midwife. You have so many options! Anyway, good luck in whatever you decide. My biggest peice of advice is to hire a Doula. Again, there are many many options in that department too! You'll have much better sucess at the natural childbirth you desire if you have a Doula on your birth team.

When it comes to having a baby DRMC SUCKS! Sorry that probably was not what you wanted to here. My experience with Holly was not a pleasant on either. She was the midwife on call when I came in to deliver my daughter. At 7cm I asked that my water be broke. The nurse said that she would ask Holly but she was down the hall asleep and she refused to wake her up.

My experience with my last and Presbyterian was much better and my Doctor was Dr. Walsh.

Just to give you some insight to my perspective I have had 4 children at 4 different hospitals (because we moved) and DRMC was the WORST.

That being said I would check out http://www.inannabirth.com I have a friend who had 2 of her 3 children with them and she absolutely loved them.

I have to agree with Susan. DRMC doesn't seem very pro-natural child birth. I went to Caring for Women with my first pregnancy and liked it ok, but ended up with a c-section from what I now think were just too many unneeded interventions. Dr. Finger told me that night I wasn't a good candidate for a VBAC in the future. I went with that for 5yrs, asking every once in a while at my annuals if that was still the case.
I decided in the end to look for another Dr for a second opinion. I went to Dr Walsh who is in the same practice as Dr Cummings and once she looked at my OP notes said there was no reason I could go for a VBAC. She also told me the DRMC won't even do VBACs, which the other Dr never mentioned.
I absolutely love the new practice where I only just thought Caring for Women was just OK. Also they are SOOOO busy all the time, I just felt that I was just another number there.

Good luck with your choice!

I started going to CFW when I got pregnant and had great experiences. Kathy was my midwife, but I also saw Holly and she was in the room with us for most of my delivery. They were both great! I was planning on having an epidural and after 3 failed attempts they both helped me deliver a whopping 9 lb. baby girl without having to intervene with forceps, vaccum, etc. I would have never guessed I could have done this after feeling such a long, hard labor, but I credit Holly and Kathy for getting me through. They are both very supportive and nurturing and really know thier stuff! Good luck!
