Remove Dog Odor

How do we get rid of the dog smell in the house? We have an older dog that is home most of the day. We bathe him once every 2weeks but we just can't seem to get the dog odor out of the house? Also, we just got all of our carpet changed. Are there any deodorizers, or candles that can neutralize the odor?

What can I do next?

Rub baking soda into the carpet, leave in overnight then vacuum. I also use OdoBan spray (Sam's club and home depot.)

You are bathing the dog to much. Does his whole coat smell? Spray the house? Potty problem? Breath? Glands? Does he roll around outside and track in smells from other dogs/cats? At the dog store they carry a dry shampoo for dogs that you do not have to get them wet. I clean my dogs stinky areas with a dry shampoo, and baby wipes to get his manhood clean.

Did you change the padding under the carpets too?

I vacuum constantly then spray Febreeze.

I, also, change out their dog beds often buying new ones. (Tried washing
the covers....didn't work as well.)

I've tried sprinkling baby powder into the carpet before vacuuming but
never felt it worked that well.

Also, air out your house any chance you get. I open all the windows &
turn on the house fan in order to give it a good "airing".

What I use, and swear by, is the Resolve Carpet Powder. It takes a little elbow grease but it is certainly worth it. We have 3 dogs and a rabbit inside. Anytime the house starts to smell (not from urine or anything, just a warm doggie smell), I put the powder on the carpet and scrub it in really good with a scrub brush. Once it's good and deep in the carpet, I let it sit for at least 30 minutes. Then I vacuum it up. Voila!
Also, if any other rooms are smelly, I use Simple Green. It's pet-safe and smells good. You can dilute it or use it full strength.

I would check with your vet and maybe have him examined. Is this a new problem or going on for a while? I've had dogs most of my life, including two that lived to be 15 and 17, and I don't remember an odor so bad that it made the house stink. It makes me wonder if he has a health condition, especially since he's older. That's pretty frequent bathing for most dogs. There are candles designed to neutralize pet odors, but it might be better to get to the root of the problem. Good luck!

Rather than having the carpet changed, you should have removed it. Can the dog not come inside? I find it unsanitary to have indoor dogs.

First, you take your beloved older dog to the vet for a checkup, to make sure he/she doesn't have a UTI.

At our house there are dogs and cats, and what I use is Nature's Miracle. You get it at your pet store. It's not cheap, but I think it's well worth every penny. You would also do well to get yourself a little black light (I have one that also came from the pet store), so you'll know exactly where the problem is - carpet, bedding, furnitures, flooring, wall, toys, wherever. You need to use the product on the proper places to get the odor out.

Baking soda is a great odor neutralizer. You can sprinkle it directly on to the carpet or pet bedding. Or make a paste with water and rub it into a particular spot... Let dry and vacuum up. Vinegar is also great for odors. A friend of mine will leave a bowl of vinegar out overnight to get rid of fish odor in the kitchen after cooking fish. I tried it in my guest room when I had a house guest ( who has significant medical issues that makes them stink really bad) I just left a bowl (a pretty decorative one) of vinegar in the room on a shelf the whole two weeks they were here, I would change it every few days, when ever you can begin to smell the vinegar the change it to fresh vinegar, it really helped. It may not be a long term solution but it can help. I by cheap vinegar by the gallon and use it for odors and cleaning often!

Steam. We bought the h2o mop x5. You can try that. Or use an air filter where you don't have to replace the screens, just wipe.

One of the best odor absorbers I have found is coffee beans. Set out a few bowls of coffee beans in them. Baking soda, let it sit and vacuum, also. And when you wash the bedding (dog's) use vinegar.
My husband's running clothes started getting that nasty rank smell that just stays in the clothes after a while. No amount of washing or bleaching seemed to get rid of it. I started washing them in non-traditional soap (made my own: fels naptha grated with a kitchen grater, some 20 Mule team borax, and Arm & Hammer Washing powder)... then used plain white vinegar as the fabric softener rinse. Voila! His work out clothes stopped stinking. Even the old ones... that I was ready to throw away.

Wash the dog bedding in THAT. And get it fully dry.

Does he lay on the furniture? Even if it "not allowed", he may be sneaking up there when everyone leaves. I ask because when our house starts smelling like the dog, it means I need to bust out with the carpet cleaner and wash the couch cushion covers. We try to keep a blanket on the couch when we aren't home, so we can just wash that regularly.

You may also want to try something like febreeze. I know many people who swear by it.

are you bathing him outside or inside?
inside might be the problem. If you aren't drying him off completely it might be getting in the carpet.
Also there arm and hammer has a carpet sprinkle stuff that you leave on for 15 mins then vacuum it up.
But you also might want to check with your vet, when my older dog was very sick he had this smell that was really horrible.
