My daughter will be 2 1/2 next month and we took her to the ENt today to get her x-ray results and she has large adneoids. The Doctor recommended removal so now we are trying to decide what to do.
I was wondering if anyone has had their child's adenoids out by Dr. Miller with ENT Associates in Clearwater Florida off of S. Fort Harrison? Is he a good surgeon? One of my friends recommended him but I really don't know much about his surgical skills. Any help with this would be appreciated.
We are in a delima with this as anyone would be. We want her to have relief she has had constant congestion and it is so bad she snores when she is really stuffed up and then her nose runs constantly. The school that she goes to called me on Friday to come pick her up cause they couldn't keep up with the constant wipping of her nose. She is not contagious just miserable. So we want her to feel better but at the same time are very afraid for her to have surgery. I know it is a common surgery but still when it is your first and only child you hate to make these decisions!
Thank you for taking the time to write back!

So What Happened?

Well my daughter had her adenoids removed yesterday by Dr. Cressman an I can't say enough about him. If anyone needs to have their childs removed he is truly the best. We were out of there by 10 she slept until 1:30 ate, drank and the was jumping on the bed by 2!!! Truly amazing. Looking forward to her feeling so much better because they are finally gone!!! Yea, now she can sleep good!!! Thanks to Kim and her post directing me to the best Doctor for this!!

My daughter had her adenoids removed and ear tubes put in February of this year, she was 2 1/2. It has made a world of difference. She finally sleeps well at night and she has only had two colds since the surgey. Both cleared up quickly and did not require antibiotics. It was a hard decision and of course we were very hesitant to have her put under anestesia but all went well and I know we made the best decision. Her quality of life is so much better now. I hated having to give her antibiotics so frequently. Her recovery was very quick. She was up and playing and asking for food the same day. Real food too, not just ice cream! By the next day it was as if it never happened. Little ones are so resilient! We had the surgery done at All Children's by Dr. Andrews. Overall, our experience there was great.

I would recommend the ENT team Orobello and Andrews out of All Children's Hospital. They are the specialists for children. Our daughter had her adenoids out and tubes put in right after she turned 2. She was better for the most part, except that her tonsils grew so large within the year that we still battled the infections. BUT...I would really consider going to a children's doctor b/c the anatomy of a 2 year old is so much smaller than an adult.
Best of luck!

My daughter is now 7 and she had hers out a couple of years ago. It was the best thing we did for her. She was always getting step throats and colds. They took her adenoids and tonsils out. My daughter was always snoring. the surgey was done at all children's hospital and she was home the same day. The surgery lasted all of 15-20 minutes. they told us longer but it wasnt. She will bounce back the same day.
Good luck and let us know how things go.

A friend of mine had her 3 year old adenoids out and will tell you it changed his and their families lives. He sleeps better, eats better and isn't as sick as he was. It was a smooth procedure and he stayed overnight. His mom and dad were given cots to stay by him. I'm not sure where she had it done, but I can ask if you want.

Best,
S., Robby (17 months) and Baby Girl (due 1/18/09)

R.,

Both of my boys had their adenoids out for similar reasons, but we did not use the doctor you are referring to. We were referred to Dr. Wade Cressman by several doctor friends/family members that we know. Dr. Cressman is great and his staff is great with children. He is a very straight forward man and doesn't like to do anything rash if it isn't completely necessary. He has an office in clearwater - 2 I think. He has done several surgeries on my boys (ear tubes several times, adenoids for both, and a frenulum (spelling?) surgery). I have never had a problem and have referred many people to him that have also been very satisfied with him and his staff.

I can say this - my oldest was born premie and had several surgeries. No matter who you choose, you need to feel comfortable with them yourself!!! If not, then it will worry you to death and your daughter will see it in your eyes!!!

Good luck - the surgery is not bad. She will never know what happened and depending on how she does with the anestesia, that may be the hardest thing to deal with - the waking up part.

Sam
