Redness in Neck Area

Hello,
My 6 month old daughter has some redness in the folds of her neck area. I wonder if it's from saliva pooling there (though I don't see that happening, but she is a drooler)... it's not bleeding or anything but it's red and looks like it could hurt soon. I've put baby powder there to keep the area dry but not sure that's the right solution. Did anyone have this issue?

What can I do next?

Hi J.,

Try to keep it dry and otherwise use calendula cream from Weleda or another mild diaper rash(zinc)(Desistin?) cream , the redness will be gone in a day. I would be very carefull using anti fungal creanms and such becayuse it is just a reaction to moisture, not funghi, good luck

It's drool and/or spit-up. My daughter gets the same thing. I bought lots of cotton bibs and trade them out when ever they get wet (this keeps me from having to change her tops all the time.) I also wipe down her neck with a soft dry wash cloth at every diaper change. Babies can develop a yeast infection in these moist folds. If it starts to smell funky. Wipe it down with a little white vinegar. Oh and be careful with the powder, it can cause problems if its inhaled.

Good luck

I found the redness on the creases of my baby's neck as well. So I tried Baby Bee's Dusting Powder by Burt's Bees and she no longer has that problem. Corn starch is an ingredient, but it worked for my baby and I heard it worked for other babies as well. There must be some natural herb in that powder that kills fungus b/c her neck started to smell funny, but after using it, the redness and smell went away. I put it on her after her baths. Make sure your baby's neck is dry then apply to her neck ( I dip a cotton swab into the powder and while she's lying down, I lift her neck and put it on the creases). Now, she even looks up for me b/c she likes the powder. :) I use it on her underarms and even behind her ears. If your baby has chubby thighs, you can use the powder there too. ;) Good luck!

Hi J.

My little one had the same problem. My doctor said not to use any baby powder containing cornstarch because it will just make it worse and possibly create sometime of yeast infection. My doctor did recommend wiping it down and using something to fan down his neck (usually a folded piece of paper) to keep it dry. Also he told me to buy Antifungal cream (I bought the target brand- Clortimazole Cream) which has worked great for him- it pretty much went away immediately. Ask your doctor if he recommends that as well. Just make sure to keep it dry as possible even if that means wiping his neck (get in the folds is important) after every feeding and fanning down his neck.

Hope that works. Let me know if you have any questions.

Marisa

My babies had this too. I think that cornstarch is better than baby powder. I can't remember why, but I think talc isn't so safe. It is from the wetness, so the more you can kind of open up the folds and dry her out the better. And be careful of rubbing it dry because even the gentlest of rubbing can be irritating. Maybe blow on it, and pat dry.
