My hubby and I have a ton of old textbooks from college and graduate school. They are very heavy. I want to recycle them or do something with them other than throw them away. Suggestions? We have researched extensively online on how to recycle them and our area seems to have nothing.
Try an online sell back site. Do a search for "text book buy back". You type in the ISBN and it will tell you if they will buy the book. If they will buy the book they will tell you for how much and they will pay for the shipping. All you have to do is pack it in the box and stick on the label. I have done this a few times and made back quite a bit of money on some old books that I found in my closet.
There are a lot of donation sites, where orgnaizations take old textbooks and ship them to third world countries.

A lot of community colleges, universities or libraries host these drives, so maybe contact them. If not, you can try donating them to Goodwill, or even to Half Price Books. Some women's shelters will take them, to give the ladies an interest in maybe going back to school.

Also, what the poster below me said, if the books are still in use they can be sold back, Some are used for a few years, others go out of the system pretty quickly.
Contact your local homeschooling support group. Many homeschooled teenagers are taking college level classes or are at least beyond high-school level and need college level texts to take them further. This gets VERY expensive for the parents and I think they deserve support with this when available since they get NOTHING from the public school system that is receiving the budgeted amount for THEIR children.
I've listed my old books on amazon.com. It's very easy, you just need to make sure you get them sent on time :) Sometimes, students like to get the older books as research material. I've sold at least one of mine already :)
Try freecycle.com to post them. Everything I've ever posted has been taken quickly.

Go to http://www.betterworldbooks.com/ and click on Sell Textbooks under Our Programs at the bottom of the page. There you type in your ISBN # and it gives you a price quote. Shipping is free. You can sell them or donate them to help global literacy. Plus this keeps them out of landfills!
Half-price books will take your textbooks. You might also consider donating them to you local library and taking the tax deduction.

The local Hospital will likey take them. They give them to the kids when they are there for long peroids of time.
