I am currently enrolled in College once again for a (hopefully) career change in the near future. I have been purchasing my textbooks from half.com, but can't seem to get a good deal on one of my textbooks this semester. Where do you purchase yours from?

So What Happened?

It is $180 to purchase one (used) Microeconomics book. I can rent it for $100.

amazon

One thing I found funny is I could buy them on amazon and sell them back to the school for more than I paid for them. :)

In case anyone wants to know how that happened, the kids at SLU complained that they were paying 170 for a textbook, selling it back for 50 and then the bookstore resold it for 110 used. So they came up with a policy if the professor requests it for the next semester they will pay 10 below the resale price. When I am paying 50 for the 170 book new on Amazon....well you know the rest. :)

I use Deal Oz to type in the ISBN, which will provide a list of various book sellers (or renters) so I can find the best deal. Good luck!

Amazon, or you can look at the bulletin boards at the school and people will sometimes sell theirs for pretty cheap... only sometimes you show up for class and the teacher tells you the book isn't necessary b/c he/she wrote their own, or would rather you purchase a different one, so you need to purchase that one. It's happened to us a few times.

Have you tried www.chegg.com? You can rent the text book if you don't want to buy.

www.dealoz.com

You type in your book title or ISBN and it searches tons of websites for the best price (including shipping and any coupon codes that are available). It even includes Walmart. :)

Then you can link directly to the selling site to get the book.

4 kids through college and I rented as many as possible unless it was a book that they would be referencing for their field of study. College book renter and chegg were both great.

Be careful with Half.com-I've had 2 friends have issues with them. Chegg and is a great one to rent or buy. Also, cheaptextbooks.com-you put in the ISBN # and it will pull up that book with the sites and prices. I got 6 nursing school books thru these sites and paid $300-the school is selling the bundle for $868.

My son's school's book store is a B&N. The prices for the used books are pretty good. He spent about $400 in the fall (including well over $100 for a used Calculus book!) but only had to purchase one book for the spring for not too much $$. I averaged it out to about $200 per term which is pretty good. I spent more than that in the 80's for my books. He can sell them all back when the term is over. I know that once he has completed those Calc classes, that book is going right back to the book store!

I am a Barnes & Noble member, so I purchase my textbooks from barnesandnoble.com with my member discount. I save quite a bit of money that way, since I usually buy new & keep most of the books. Good luck in college!

I usually sell my textbooks on ebay. Have you tried looking there? Also if you have Amazon Student they have discounts on textbooks. (In case you didn't know you can get Amazon Student for free for a year if you sign up using your student email. Amazon Student is basically Prime). Good luck!
