Recommendations for Sippy Cups

Good morning! We are trying to transition our 14 month old from the bottle to sippy cups. We're still doing four feedings throughout the day. She has been using sippy cups since around 9-10 months, but just for drinking water and such. She loves those and no problems there.

I bought new ones that mimic the shape of her bottle and with a soft spout but no luck. I thought the Nubby would work great but it leaks when she sucks on it, unless she holds the bottle a certain way (and she doesn't like to be told how to do it <smile>).

Would love to hear your suggestions/recommendations. Thank you and have a great day!

So What Happened?

Thank you moms for all the wonderful advice, suggestions and recommendations. No more bottles! I returned the leaky Nubby ones and got it replaced. We bought a couple of others - Playtex and the tumblers. She likes them all but prefers the Nubby for her milk and learned to "sip-suck" with it, similar to what she was doing with her bottle. We're also trying the tumbler and the lil one is pretty receptive to that too (never did think about the speech associations). Thanks everyone and have a wonderful weekend.

Just choose a brand/type.
Bear in mind, I was the type that used any "cute" one I saw at the store, and brought it home. My kids got used to seeing/using any type. They had no preference.

Leave the cups around the house on a coffee table or play area etc. She will get used to it.
I did that with both my kids. I had several that I would leave out, with water, where they could get it and reach for it at will.

To me, using a sippy cup does not have to be taken out only at certain times, or used at certain times. Why? They should be able to drink from it, whenever. Even in the car.
Plus, it just gets them used to it.

As she gets older, she'll get more adept at using the cup.

All the best,
Susan

Hey!

I like the gerber ones that have the dual side handles. How I got my son used to the sippy cup was by taking out the stopper to let him suck a minute so he knows what is in it and then I replaced it. He uses them all the time.

C.,

One thing I know from experience is stick to one kind of cup. I used NUBY and got the one's with the hard top lid so, that there was a difference between the bottle and cup. Find one your little girl can use and stick with it.

Also, a suggestion Susan made on here was to keep them around and available. So on the coffee table, at meal time and just arounnd the house so she can see and grab them when she wants to. I gave this suggestion to friend and she says in a week her little one was more apt to pick the cup over the bottle.

Just be consistent and be excited about it and she'll get it.

I agree about the Nubbys, they leak! I used the Playtex soft spout sippys with the handles to transition my daughter. My son went straight from the bottle to hard spouts, but she needed soft for quite a while.

Playtex. When they start to leak buy replacement valves.

Yes, definitely steer clear of the Nuby cups! They are cheap for a reason (and I tried like 3 different kinds of Nuby cups until I finally learned MY lesson! LOL).
I think Playtex and Gerber cups are the best, in my opinion :)

Hi! My son, 11 mos. old drinks primarily from a Nuk brand "orthodontic" cup. It has handles which can be removed to promote drinking with a regular cup and the part where the mouth goes is soft and rectangular in shape. It doesn't leak at ALL. It's an awesome cup. We bought it at WalMart for about $5.00 or so. He prefers it to any other cup we've offered (won't hardly touch the others, and when he does, he makes a mess) and he has even used it to go down for a nap. Good luck!

Hi C.,
Above all, go for the BPA-free cups. I think my mother-in-law purchased some at Target :)

I'm in the same boat as you and have decided to try different ones and the best I've found so far are any of the Playtex ones because I never have a problem with them leaking and my daughter has no problem drinking from them. I especially like the insulated ones.

What' s the rush? 14 months is so young why not let her enjoy her bottle for a little longer? I am a mother of 3 very successful young adults who enjoyed their bottles well after their second birthday. The only rule I made after the second birthday was that you don't walk around with the bottle all day long. You can have it when you wake up or when you are tired but in one place and when you are done you put the bottle on a chair next the kitchen counter (since they could not reach the counter at that age), or give it to mommy.

My son would drink everything else but milk from his sippy cup. What I did was put a little bit of milk in a sippy cup everyday and give it to him. For about 2 weeks he would just drool the milk out of his mouth. The day he actually drank the milk from the cup I got rid of all his bottles. Just be patient she will come around. Not great advice, but very simple.

Why not use the same sippy cups that she already uses for water?

With the Nuby's, the spout thing needs to be correctly aligned. Those indentations need to totally match up or the seal isn't tight and it will leak on the sides.

Playtex are the best for no leaks. But after awhile it becomes tedious to get all the "gunk" that forms inside all of the little valves and holes.

Both my kids hated the Avent ones.

DD likes the Nuby ones, although they do leak a little. When she was using them, I would just have to make sure that she didn't drop them and that they were right side up. They make BPA free ones now.

Right now we are transitioning away from sippy cups all together so she just uses the Toss N Go cups with the sippy lids or straws. She is almost 2.

I have straw cups. One is by Thermos and is stainless steel-BPA free. I am actually looking for regular BPA free cups but Babies R Us only carries sippy cups. If anyone knows of a place I can buy some it would be most appreciated.

I had the same problem with the nuby cups as you did. We use the gerber sippy cups that change color with temperature and tall, slender playtex cups. We have had the same ones for 2 years now and they still don't leak. We love those two brands and they have been well used! Good luck!

We used Nuk bottles and they make a great sippy cup. The spout is different than the bottle but does not spill if she turns it upside down. Our daughter is 14 months and has been using it since she was about 10-11 months. It has two slits that when sucked on open up.

I used Avent sippies, but feel they all leak a little . The only ones I have that don't leak I bought at costco, but they don't have handles, so not good for starting out.

Get the new ones by First Years...It's at target and babies r us. it has a har tip spout but the center is like a nuby...so they can't bite it and make it leak. Plus no inside parts to take off and scrub sour milk out of.

Hi C.,
As an early interventions teacher I have a favorite sippy cup that I try to get all my families to use. It is called the "Coolster Tumbler" and I love it because the child has to use the exact same lip closure as what they would use on an open cup, which is important for speech. You don't want the sippy cup to have a soft nipple, or encourage sucking similar to what is done with a bottle or breast, you want it to teach sipping. The preferred cup does come with a graduated stopper inside, one flows slowly, and one flows freely. I usually toss the stopper and use the top naked. It will leak that way, if turned upside down, but that is the point, to teach controlling the liquid by sipping, and tilting the cup gently. The stopper is OK for starting tho. and good for transporting the cup so it won't leak. One thing I don't like about the cup is that it is huge, but the lid fits on many other brands of sippy cup, so you can use it on a two handled one if that is what your child needs, or a smaller cup if she has little hands, etc.The lid has a small hole, and is recessed, so that the upper lip is not on the cup lid. You'll see when you find it. It is at Target somethimes, or Walmart, but you can always find it at Babies R Us. It is expensive, costs about 4.99 for one and 7 or 8.99 for two, but it is worth it if it gets the little mouth ready for speech. Good luck.

Hi C., I would do away with the bottle completely, and fill her sippy cup and leave it where she can reach it. Most kidsd don't want to be told how to do something specially liyyle girls, their so independant, but if you just set it somewhere she will get it on her own, I wouldn't do four feedings anymore, I would give her 3 neals a day plus snacks, and just have her cup available during, at least until you start potty training. Hope this helped. J. .

We like the Take and Toss cups and have been using them since my son weaned from nursing (I had nursed him for a year). They can be found at Target, Babies R Us, and Walmart and are fairly inexpensive that they can be tossed and replaced as time goes on.

The NUBY sippy cups with a "STRAW" are the best! They don't leak and my son went straight from the bottle to the straw. She might like that better.

The Nuby is our favorite, but they do leak. I love how easy they are to clean and put together in a hurry. We also like the Playtex...especially the thermos style because they keep her milk cold for hours.

i know what you mean with the nuby cups. the trick with them is that theres 2 little nubs on the spout piece you have to get those in the little indents on the plastic ring that holds it on or it drips. i love the platex cups because i like the valves better then the gerber cups.

Try a straw cup, playtex makes great spillproof cups with a soft flexible straw. The straw is better for developing speech muscles and doesn't coat their teeth with juice or milk like a sippy anyway :)
