My daughter goes to the Glendale Heights preschool and she brought home a note about signing up for safety town. They have one-week classes in the summer for ages 5-7 that cover many different safety topics. It's only $15 for the week, so we will be signing up. Their number is ###-###-#### if you want to call and find out more.
Depending on where you are located, there's one in Darien on Cass near 75th. I don't know anything about it, but I drive by it every day. I think they only do classes in the summer because it usually looks empty. The website is: http://safetyvillageofdarien.org/
smart idea to teach your granddaughter about safety early!
Naperville has a "Safety Town". I don't know about any others in the Chicago area, not to say there aren't.
My company, Underwriters Laboratories (UL) is a not-for-profit testing laboratory, and we have a great free safety program for school kids called "Safety Smart". We send "safety ambassadors" to schools at their request and provide fun and interesting safety presentations on electrical hazard and fire safety, for each grade of elementary school, usually during a science class. There are safety demonstrations and free souveniers for the kids. (I presented a few before I had my two babies, now I have no time!). Check with your school or you can call UL at ###-###-#### and ask for Ginger Sommer (ext. 42862) or Donna Kuby (ext. 43012). You can tell them that M. Schuster suggested you call.
I don't know anything about safety classes either like this. but ready.gov and fema have some great safety things for kids online here:

The Wheaton Park District has a great program called Safety City for children 4 - 6 years old.
Safety City
Learning about safety early in life is vitally important, and Safety City helps children gain the basics to make their lives safer and happier. Hands-on teaching includes games, crafts, music, stories, videos, crafts and role-playing. The curriculum includes pedestrian safety, passenger safety, at-home safety, fire prevention, playground safety and "Stranger Danger." There's time to practice safe behaviors on the Safety City outdoor layout that includes buildings, sidewalks, crosswalks and traffic signals. Each session ends with an open house for friends and families. Each child must bring a bicycle helmet to every class. Participants should bring a snack and beverage every day.
Wheaton's Safety City is great. My kids have gone to a week long camp in the summer. They have a once-a-week class during the summer and school year as well. Check out the Wheaton Park District website!
What do you mean by safety classes? Do you mean risk of injury from things in the house or playground, or do you mean stranger danger? Usually stranger danger is covered in depth in school, and your police department could give you info on those types of classes. If it's physical safety (injury, accidents), then the parents of the child should call the pediatrician's office to ask.
I was wondering about what kind of safety you are looking for as well? If you are looking for having them learn safe bike riding and stopping at lights etc, Elmhurst park district has a Safety Town and classes for that. You can check out the classes from the brochure available at www.epd.org.
Good luck.
Hi K.,
The Naperville Jr. Women's Club offers a week-long camp at Naperville's "Safety Town." It is limited to children entering either kindergarten or first grade. I know that spots fill up quickly & registration started a few weeks ago, but hopefully it's not too late for your granddaughter. Some of my daughter's classmates went last year & loved it, so I signed my daughter up for this year. The price is very reasonable as well, in my opinion. You can find out more info & complete registration here:
