Hi, Just wanted to know if anyone knows of any good play groups or Mommy and Me classes in my area. I have looked all over the internet and have not found anything. I would be willing to drive to Burbank or Glendale too. I stay at home with my 20 month old daughter and we want to find some new activities to do together and with other moms and kids.

What can I do next?

Hi T.!

I have two suggestions! First off, I attend a Parent Education (Mommy & Me) class with my 2 1/2 year old daughter at the Glendale Community College. It's free and it's really wonderful. Our teacher lives in Sunland and most of the parents live in the Glendale area. I live in La Crescenta. This semester is winding down, but they will have a summer session. Registration starts soon, so call to get info if you're interested ###-###-####.

Second suggestion...I'm part of an online playgroup called Valley Tots. There are about 10 active ladies from all over the valley area. Some as far as Encino and Santa Clarita and I'm the farthest east. All of us have children that were born in either 2003, 2004 or 2005 but most of us also have older or younger children as well. We get together for play dates and I plan a Mom's Night Out once a month. We just went to the Ice House Comedy Club in Pasadena (it was so much fun). If you're interested, go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ValleyTots/

The best deal in town in regards to play groups/mommy and me's used to be at Sunland Park until a few years ago when they moved up Foothill to the Lakeview Terrace Recreation Center. There are two "Mommy and Me" groups there run by LAUSD Adult Education and are actually "Parent Education" parent-child classes. Each class is once a week for 3-hours and includes learning activities as well as a parent presentation. They're wonderful! Not only did I take my daughter for 4 years until she "graduated" out to kindergarten but I taught them for 4 years, and I can't say enough good about them. There are only two classes over there. One on Monday morning from 8:30 to 11:30 (I think that's the right time) and on Wednesdays from 9:00 to 12:00. The Rec. Center classes are actually branch sites for the Kennedy-San Fernando Adult School, but the best thing to do is to go over there at the beginning of class and talk to the teachers. You'll love them! They run for an entire semester and only cost about $30 total. Glendale College also runs them. Have fun!!

Glendale college has a great mommy and me program. It is through the Life Skills Department. I do not know the age limit but I think it is through preschool. La Canada Presbyterian Church also has a great parent education program. The one at Glendale college only charges parking fees but the one in La Canada does have a tuition. They would both start again in the fall.

Hello T.,

Go on line to Glendale College/Parent Education Classes (Mommy&Me).
Summer registration begins on May 19, if you register on time you should be able to find a class. The closest locations for you would be in La Crescenta/La Canada or Glendale College. The classes are free.

Good luck!

Have you looked into the LAUSD Adult schools in your area, they host Mommy and Me type classes for you and yor child, the class are very inexpensive and are offered by semester. I love ours, my 3 year old things it's school (we are in the valley). We do field trips, art work, play time, song and dance and the very needed adult time where the Parents can share their experiences on a certain topics.

Hi T.,
Glendale Community College has an amazing Parent Ed Program. My son and I did the program since he was a newborn until he was 4. Not only was it an amazing resource and lots of fun, but I made friends that I will know forever. Their phone number is ###-###-####. Some of their classes are even offered in La Crescenta. I can't say enough great things about the program!
Burbank also has a parent ed program, but I don't know their info.
Also, there is Mom's Club www.momsclub.org. You can contact them to find out about groups in your area.
Another resource is www.meetup.com. There are groups on there that you can join for play groups. Another great resource.
All the best! M.

The Mommy and Me classes at the Burbank Adult school are really great. I have taken them with my daughter, who is almost 3, since she was 18 months. They are a great way to meet other moms and kids, the facility is really nice, and the teachers are excellent. It is also very affordable, unlike some of my daughter's activities! The courses are titled as parenting, but they are really mommy and me. Their number is ###-###-####, and the director is named Linda. Good luck!
