Rash!!! - Lubbock,TX

At about six weeks old my daughter had a HORRIBLE rash that covered her entire head, ears and all. The doctor couldn't ever figure it out and it went away after about three LONG weeks.
My daughter just turned five months and the rash is back. It's not as bad yet, but I want it to go away as soon as possible for pictures. Any ideas as to what this could be? She's been on food for about a month and it doesn't seem to be a food allergy.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I just want to thank everyone for the replies! I took her to the doctor and she just said that she's got sensitive skin. She gave me a mild steroid cream. It already looks better today. We'll see I guess. I think I'm going to stop using fabric softner for a while too.

I'm assuming the Dr. ask about what soap & shampoo you may be using, and also detergent. My daughter had a problem with the soap I was washing her clothes in. So it could even be her sheets? She also broke out on the face and ears bad from a medicine the Dr. had gave her that she was alergic to, that I guess was unusual. YOu may try taking just one food away, and see if it makes a difference, and then put it back in and take away a different one, just in case she may be alergic to one.

I would request a referral to a good dermatologist from the pediatrician. Then, think about any products such as soap and lotions you are using - have you changed anything? The same goes for laundry - have you changed detergents or fabric softeners? Also, remember to wash all new clothing before using. The other possibility would be to eliminate all food, and start reintroducing one at a time to see if she reacts to any one food in particular. Good luck! D.

Hi my name is S. I have a six year old daughter now but when she was almost a year she started to get this horrible rash on her face and body it looked like someone had taken a red marker and was playing connect the dots but had not connected the bright red dots yet. She ran a little fever took her to the doctors they ran test they thought she had ruematic fever sorry mispelled. She had pnemoneu and fifth disease it is a rash that appears and is contagious before they get the rash. I know it is really weird. Does your baby have little swirly rash on the arms and legs or is it just rash. The doctor was stumped took her to another doctor and he was able to find out what she had. Goodluck

Is it only her head? My baby broke out in a bad rash when she was 5 months old. Through a process of elimination, we figured it was a reaction to the rice cereal she was eating. I stopped the rice, and I am nursing her, so when I ate rice, she broke out again. It took about 3 weeks to clear it up. We have avoided rice, and she has been fine. Well, about 2 weeks ago, she broke out again. I finally figured out what triggered it, just last night. They were giving the babies Honey Nut Cheerios at daycare, and I bought a box for my son last night, and read the ingredients, and it has rice bran in it. She itches horribly, and we have to have prescribtion ointment to clear it up. The first break out was worse, it was from the top of her head to the bottom of her feet. This time, it was mostly her face and she got a horrible diaper rash too. I would look moe closely at food allergies. It can cause a rsah, my baby has ezcema, it can be caused by food.

An old family ritual we have done for generations is to rinse our babies in salt water. I prevents newborn peeling & keeps their skin soft.
My grandson has has eczema really bad since he was just a few months old in his hair, his feet, legs arms, well just about everywhere, finally at 20 months we dicovered that bathing or rinsing him in sea salt has cleared up all of his rash. And we have stopped using baby lotion as well.
We still use baby wash gotta have that fresh smell, lol.
Not sure what your baby has but you might give it a try.
Good luck & God Bless.

There is no way to tell what the rash with out seeing it first.
You need to take her to a dermatologist asap.
Sometimes with girls especially...the mothers hormones come up through the skin causing this for the first 6 months or so.
But it could be anything.
Until then bathe her only in a collidal oatmeal product(aveeno or store brand). No soap. Aveeno makes a rash cream that works great.
Good luck!

It is hard to tell when they get on food if an outbreak is a food allergy. My doctor told us that it can take two weeks for a certain food allergy to show up so he put us on a schedule to only introduce a new food every two weeks. You might also see if they can run a test for "fifth disease". I'm a teacher aswell and it can run through our school pretty fast. I had a co-worker who came down with it while she was pregnant and they watch her little one pretty closely :) They ran a test on me when I was pregnant to make sure I had already had it. It really is just uncomfortable:)
Hope this helps:)

Hi, If you do end up having to have your daughters photos done you can always touch them up with Photoshop but if you don't have it I would be happy to touch up the photos free of charge if they are digital and you can email them to me...

As far as the rash goes, My 1st son was ALWAYS getting rashes and we never knew what most of them were...He got Hand, foot and mouth, roseola, 5ths disease, and those were the ones we knew of the other rashes we did not know what they were. I would think if it was an allergy she would have it all over not just on her head unless it was shampoo but i use the shampoo on the body as well...

Good luck

Has your daughter had a cold or virus of some sort before the rash showed up? My children had a rash sometimes after they had a fever (from no where) or a cold. I took the first one to the doctor and it was called a Xantham (sp?) rash. Nothing to worry about, it just had to run it's course. It did not seem to bother the kids at all. Hope this helps.

I'd take her to a pediatric dermatologist to have it checked out. From my experience, our pediatrician is not the best for skin problems. Good Luck!

I have a skin care, health and wellness company.

All of our products are botanically based and have a number of other benefits to them.

We have a GREAT baby care line. My daughter has eczema and I use it on her. The diaper rash cream is great for rashes, hives, bug bites and anything that itches.

The products is called ABC Baby Line.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Tak4e care and God bless!

Hi D.. My daughter is 12 weeks old and had the same type of rash from about 4-7 weeks until I changed her soap and lotion. We were using Huggies brand then tried Johnson's but it wasn't until I switched to Aveeno bath wash and lotion that it cleared up. I am nursing and have not altered my diet so I assume that the change in product is what made the difference. The rash didn't seem to bother her, I simply wanted it gone, ya know. Good luck, I hope you have sucess!

Watch your laundry detergents and fabric softeners. My daughter was allergic to Downy, but we can now use snuggle fabric softener. I love the smell, but sometimes they do put harsh chemicals in the laundry soaps etc that can cause rashes. I even went so far to just using vinegar and hot water for while until we could get it out of the sheets and clothes, but now that she is older, we have no problems. Good Luck

Hi D.,
I have 4 wonderful children and my last son is 3 yrs old and when he was 5 weeks old I woke up one morning to find that he had this horrible rash that covered his little body from head to toe (including his scalp, inside his ears and just all over)I took him to the doctor and she told me that it was a heat rash. Well I call La Leche league and spoke to a consultant and she told me to research Eczema. SO I did and that is exactly what it was. 4 months later my sister had a baby and the same thing happened to her at 5 weeks, since I already went through it all with my son she was able to tell her doctor what it was so they would give her cream's for the ezcema. What really worked for me was Fluticasone cream (not sure if that is the correct way to spell it). I hope this helps you. Blessings. C..

This might be far fetched, but thought I'd ask...

Are you still breastfeeding? My friends daughter had a rash on her face all the time as a baby. They couldn't figure it out. Thought it was excema, were prescribed creams, ect. Come to find out that her daughter (when she tried eggs for the first time) had a severe reaction. Her mother loved eggs and ate them every morning. The daughter is deathly allergic to eggs and it went through her moms breastmilk and gave her a rash. Like a said, this isn't probably that common, but I thought I'd mention it. Good luck!

Hey, D.!

Instead of the doctor, you should really go to a dermatologist. Let the receptionist know, when you call for an appointment, that she is a child and ask if it is ok. She should get tested for allergies of any kind in case it is something that worsens later on in life to swelling of the throat or something scary like that. I don't know why your doctor didn't tell you about that. It also could be exima or roseacha. I thought I had acne scars on my cheeks since 8th grade. Found out in college it is roseacha.

Hope it helps!! Sorry, I can't spell either of those words!

It could be craddle cap. My daughter had it on her face, neck and even some on her sholders. I knew about cc, but I thought it was only on the head. Not so. CC can have a yellow look to it and it can smell weird. It's easy to treat. If you haven't asked your dr. about it, try and see what he/she says.

Good Luck!

Take your daughter to a dermatologist, if you haven't already. Michelle p.s. it doesn't have to be a pediatric dermatologist. Sometimes it takes much, much longer to get an appointment with a pediatric dermatologist.

I would suggest going straight to a pedi only dermatologist to get it checked out rather then a regular pediatrician. Not sure where you're located but there is a great one on Hwy 26 almost to 114..I'm guessing that would be Grapevine.
