Question About Formula

I want to start introducing formula to my 9 month old to get him (and my breasts) ready for day care. Is there any difference between formulas? Do some taste better than others? I tried a little similac for the first time today and it sure doesn't compare to breast milk.

Thanks,

K.

What can I do next?

We used similac and we/ my son were happy with it once he got used to it. I would recommend, however, mixing breast milk with formula to get him used to it - start with mostly breast milk, and slowing increased the amount of formula in it. It may really help with his transition. Good luck!

Hi - I just introduced formula to my 11 month old girl two weeks ago as my supply is decreasing since she doesn't nurse as much, even though I am pumping as much as I can.

ANyway, we tried both Nestle Good Start w/DHA and enfamil Lipil w/AHA, DHA and she didn't even seem to notice the difference. I introduced it mixed with her morning cereal, then she drank the rest of the bottle without batting an eye. She is only getting one serving a day, the rest of the time I pump.I noticed no changes in her bowel movements.

Now that I've read everyone elses' responses I am going to get the walmart organic & try it next.I've been keeping organic but somehow forgot to ook for organic formula.

Wow good for you being able to nurse for so long! I fed my daughter breast milk exclusively for 7 months and pumped at work for 5 months before my supply needed help. Since you only have 3 months before he can transition to whole milk, you might be able to pump.

If your work situation does not allow it or if it's not an option I just bought Wal-Mart brand Similac (Organic is best and still cheap) to supplement her bottles. It's half the price and has the same ingredients. I still breastfeed (she's 11 months) at night and in the morning.

Nothing is going to be as good as your own milk but if you start by mixing it 1 part to 3 then 2 to 2 then 3 to 4 your son shouldn't have a problem.

I have found the best is Good Start DHA, ARA! Similac was hard on my sons belly, he also could not have Enfamil.

When transitioning my son, my pedi recommended goodstart (nestle) because my son didn't like the similac. After about a week of really yucky BMs, he did great. I don't know how long you have to make the transition, but you might want to ask your pedi if you can just start him on whole milk - one less transition to make later. He's a little young, but if you have a while to do it, it might work out. (Same thing with using a sippy cup instead of a bottle). Good luck!

Is there anyway you can pump? I've been pumping for my daughter since going back to work at 3 months. She is now 10 months and I am still able to pump w/o using formula at all.

I know that isn't want you asked but there are other options.

I tried Similac and Emfamil with my son, I didn't produce enough milk to breastfeed him. But he had a lot of gas with the enfamil. I ended up switching to organic walmart brand formula b/c I didn't want to give him what I felt was unnecessary added hormones. A friend of mine smelled the organic formula when mixed and said it didn't have the same nasty smell as the regular formula. It seems trial and error on what your child likes and what you like. I hope you find what works for you.

When I went back to work I pumped for a while but it was really tough to keep up my supply with my growing boy! To transition him I mixed the formula and breastmilk at first. He didn't seem to notice! Good luck!

My guy had no issues switching to formula from breastmilk when I stopped producing enough milk to keep him well-fed & satisfied. We started with the WalMart Organic brand (Parent's Choice) but switched to Earth's Best Organic (diary based) b/c I could have cases delivered to the house! Like the previous post I was/am concerned about unnecessary growth hormones & of course the environment and choose to eat/drink organic whenever possible.

Remember that as with medications, etc formula is given to docs through vendor/reps and so they have some loyalty to them...a very little bit of research and you will find what works best for your precious little one.

I know that good start is sweeter, but I used similac - its what my pedi recommended b/c it didnt have sunflower seed oil in it which can cause allergies (something to that effect). But do you currently pump at all? If so, mixing the breast milk & formula will help in the transition.
