Puppy Pee

We have our puppy now. He is so great! The only problem we are having is that he will pee in one corner in our back room. When we would take my Dad's dog while he was out of town his dog would also urinate in that corner. While talking to my ex sis in law ( we bought my ex mother in laws house) she said that is where thier dog always went to the bathroom. So Im guessing even though that spot has been washed countless number of times, the smell is still there and that is why the dogs keep going there. Is there something I can clean the floor with that will get the smell out or smell bad enough to where our puppy will stop going there.

During the day isn't a big deal, I take him out hourly. But at night he is going there instead of waking us up to go out. I know Im going to have to start setting my alarm to take him out regularly during the night until he is big enough to hold it. But in the mean time, if I don't catch him... is there anything that will smell bad enough to where he wont want to go there?

I have put puppy pads down over the spot, but he moves the pad and goes on the floor. We don't have a crate for him, thinking about getting one though.

The floor is cement covered with linoleum.. so I don't have to worry about ruining anything under it.
Yes I do make him face where he pee'd and treats for going outside. :) But we can't put anything large in the spot, its in front of our back door... even though we never use that door its our only other exit to the house.

What can I do next?

def get him a crate he will learn not to pee in it. although there will be times you will have to clean up a mess from the crate and the puppy! i would put a plant or book shelf something big and decorative that he could not move or tear up or ruin when he pees right next too it. also we put the puppys face in the spot (you dont have to rub its nose in it just take his little head and make him face it) then tell him NO! no peeing in the house and put him outside. then when he pees outside lots of clapping yeahs and petting the puppy. thats how we trained all of our dogs. my husband thought this was very mean! but he had lots of trouble training dogs :D

Definitely get a crate to use at least at night. We have a puppy, too, and the crate has been incredibly useful. She peed in her crate at night maybe one week and it's been dry at night ever since. Also useful to have the crate for times like when you're eating dinner or have guests over.

They say Nature's Miracle will get rid of the smell, but so far we haven't seen that to be the case. People rave about this product, though. We've started using NM, followed by Resolve carpet cleaner to really get spots cleaned up. Otherwise, our puppy also seems to pee in the same spot, even when we've cleaned thoroughly and used NM. With linoleum, you may see better results than we have with NM.

Good luck!

I agree--he definitely needs a crate/kennel at night. It will be a transition for him and you might have a few rough nights, but he'll get used to it and he'll eventually feel safe there. This might seem drastic, but if you can afford it I would consider replacing that linoleum. I suspect the urine from the previous dog/dogs has gotten underneath it and no matter how well you clean the surface or what you use you won't be able to get rid of the smell. If you do pull it up you will probably need to thoroughly treat/clean the cement underneath.

Hydrogen peroxide will remove the odor. Not sure what it will do to the linoleum, but we used it in my mom's basement when we pulled up her carpet and poured it straight on the floor. We "treated" it 3 times with the hydrogen peroxide and it removed the odor. Good luck to you and congrats on the puppy.

i fully understand your situation-i have 3 rescues 2 females one male-boy talk about a challenge-use straight vinegar-put in spray bottle and spray whole area-not only does it sanitize but also kills all bacteria and smell-and yep a little kennel wouldnt hurt one bit.good luck

Your puppy doesn't realize that isn't his "bathroom" because that is what it was for other dogs. Good news is he knows not to go other places in the house. Putting him in a kennel at night will help because he will learn not to go potty during the night. They won't go potty where they sleep. During the day leave the kennel open so he can go in there and it becomes his bedroom, shutting it only when you go to bed and when you have to leave for a bit during the day. This will help keep him out of the corner when you aren't there to watch. The smell is probably in the linoleum so you may have to replace it.

We had the same problem when we moved into our house. We used Nature's Miracle twice to be sure we got the proteins out of the floor (apply liberally - we poured it onto the concrete slab, then let it dry naturally). Then we let it dry very thoroughly and sealed it with Kilz.

The linoleum will have to be replaced, of course.

Good luck!
