I have a 14 month old LLasa Apso who is just great, I am a 1st time dog owner so need a little advice. She gets really excited a piddles a little when she does. (when we 1st get home from work, shopping, etc.. ) I've tried the whole store "pet cleaners", "odor removers" , but none of them seem to take out the smell. I own a carpet cleaner so usually can get to it pretty quickly, the stain will disapear but then come back in a few days.Along with the terrible smell. I've also tried the whole vinegar thing as well. NO LUCK !!! :( So I guess this is a 2 part help me thing... Is it normal for dogs to do this? I've been told that it stops after a year. She doesn't usually full blown "go" just the little presents but 100 of them later I feel as if our house has become a litter box. I have heard if you get them fixed that this stops... Any hepl would be great.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks, We tried many of the suggestions. Some worked better than others. We also found a product called Kids and Pets. Really cheap $5 for a huge bottle. It seemed to neutralize the smell instead of just covering it with perfume/cleaner.

If the stain is coming back then it has gotten into the carpet pad. You need a deeper carpet cleaner to get down that far. Plus you need to soak up as much as possible before cleaning so that when you add water and cleaning solutions you aren't pushing the pee down to the carpet pad.

But, until she can control her bladder completely (this is very normal, especially for female dogs and no fixing doesn't help) greet her outside or in the kitchen, both easy clean ups if there is an accident. My mom's dog has always had this problem and she is about 4 years old now. She has been fixed too. They just always greet Angel outside.

Definitely see your vet! Sometimes these "little presents" are an indication of a genetic defect or infection. The lingering odor also seems to suggest an underlying problem. In my experience with both cats and dogs, dog urine isn't as powerful and shouldn't be difficult to remove. Also, if it's happening when you first get home, it could be that she has a full bladder and can't hold it! Small dogs have small bladders.

A product I really love for all stains and odors is Bio-Kleen Bac-Out, available in the hippie/natural foods aisle at Fred Meyer. It's a Northwest product made in Vancouver, Wash. It's the best.

Hi Liz,

I have 2 small dogs myself. For cleaning up, I can't live without "Nature's Miracle" (found at most large pet stores and is also great for kid barf and kid pee/poo messes). You clean/blot the mess, saturate with Nature's Miracle (I keep it in a spray bottle), and let it dry. Sometimes I'll saturate and blot it up, then saturate again and let it dry.

I've also found BioKleen "Bac-Out Stain and Odor Eliminator" to be fabulous. Same concept as above. Lovely lime scent ... and it's a local company!

As for prevention, I think you need to do some serious crate-training with your puppy. If you're not familiar with the concept, it may seem like you're 'locking her up' but it's really the best for the dog overall - and for your house!

There is a lot of information about crate training on the web, but with my dogs, we basically had them in their crate (kennel) whenever we weren't actively playing or snuggling with them. Most puppy breeds don't have the bladder control or understanding of 'going outside every time' for several months - which means you need to be super diligent and help them get through this stage in their development. Every time you take your puppy out of it's kennel, the very first thing is to take it outside to go potty. Then bring it in and play or whatever, but take it outside again every hour. If you know people are coming over, put her in the kennel. When you leave the house, put her in the kennel. If you are coming home and know she may be out, call and have someone put her in the kennel before you walk in. She just can't handle having a weak-ish puppy bladder AND the excitement of seeing mom!! :)

Those are my thoughts. If you're consistent with potty training and helping her handle excitement while she's still a puppy, she's going to grow up to be a fantastic dog with (hopefully) good bladder control that understands where the right place to go potty is! :)

Best of luck ...
PS: I just saw a comment about Folex - that stuff is ALSO fantastic at carpet stain removal!!!

I used to have a puppy that did that too. you can try getting the puppy fixed but my puppy was fixed and she still piddled. i see that you are a very busy mom but maybe try giving her/him more walks, especially right after you get home. talk with your vet and see if there is anything you can do for your puppy.

to clean your spots, try Folex, this stuff is great. when i moved into my home we had a black spot on my kids carpet and when i used the folex it came out and never came back. it is pricey but works great.

I would definately recommend a product called Nature's Miracle. It was actually recommended to me by a vet and we love it! It does not have much of an odor and it still takes out the stain and the smell. You can find it at any pet stores (maybe even Target or other such stores) It's amazing! Good luck.

Hi Liz
There is a cleaner called Nature's Miracle and you can get it from Pet's Smart. It takes away the smell but I'm not sure about the stains. I've only seen it used on dark carpet. I think what might have happened is maybe the pee has soaked into the carpet pad and then your cute little puppy goes back and pees in the same place and that's why they come back? OR it's just soaking back through from the carpet pad? To my knowlegde home carpet cleaners don't really do the trick in situations like these. I would suggest getting a professtional carpet cleaning and then when you get home quickly let your puppy go outside to greet you. OR hard wood floors work too! I have a dog that does the same thing. When we get home we let her out and say Krystal go potty and THEN we greet her. Works very well. Good luck!

I'm not sure how to get the smell out but it is normal for puppies to do it. We have a friend who is a pet trainer and he said their bladder doesn't fully develop till about a year. I started greeting my dog in the kitchen or outside... he hasn't been doing it much lately and he turns 1 on July 1st so....

Yeah, I would get him neutered. Also talk to you vet, they might have some ideas for you too, and get him checked out. You don't want to punsh him and then find out he has a urinary tract infection or something.

I have heard really good things about Natures Miracle also. I normally use vinegar for those types of things...my mother used to always use it (i think she poured it on and dabbed it off)...the only trouble was that we had to smell vinegar for a few weeks. :( I would try the natures miracle.

Liz,
I don't know where you are located, but my husband and I run an indoor air restoration company our 4-6 hour treatment can eliminate this odor - we are in Oak Harbor, WA but we travel all the way to seattle - our service is able to eliminate odors such as pet, smoking, moldy, but also kills bacteria, mold, mildew and more. There are also a couple of things you can do on your own to help with the odor - just give me a call and I will give you a few tips! ###-###-#### - even if you are not near me :).
As far as the puppy goes that is part of their personality - sorry - when they get excited some dogs can't control themselves - I would have her cheked by a vet to make shure there is not a uniary problem, then it is all about training and patcients!
Be careful with some of the "pet tratments" they might actually just lock the odor into your carpet -
Is there one certian place that she goes or is it all over the house??
Good luck!

Try nature's miracle. It's an enzyme cleaner and sold at pet stores. The instructions are on the bottle for carpet cleaning and or floor wash. I use it in my utility room where my catbox is when there is an occassional accident. Hope that this helps! Good luck! My mom's llasa never stopped peeing, I hope that you can train her quickly. My mom got Kelly when she was older and past the point of house training. What a mess. Good luck to you!

When the puddle is fresh sprinkle baking soda on the soiled area. Let it soak up the pee. Vacuum up the baking soda. You might have to do this 2 or 3 times to the one spot depending on how bad it is. Then I use some vinegar in a spray bottle, lightly spray the area leave for a minute or two and then sprinkle with baking soda again and let it dry and vacuum again. Definitely get the dog fixed. Try and make her calm when you come home and take her outside immediately. Does she go in the house otherwise or just when she is excited? I have always had good luck potty training my dogs. I show them the spot tell them no or rub their nose in it and then take them outside and give them a reward when they do it outside on their own. Take her outside every two hours or so and remember to praise her when she does good. good luck.

Hey I've been having the same problem with my 9 month old. She gets so excited then when I touch her she pees a little. I keep her in a crate while I'm t work and then when i get home I let her outside first. I wait til she is peeing and then do the whole good girl thing then pet her up. Its been working ok. Sometimes I'm to busy when I first get home to watch her pee I just make sure I pet her where it doesn't matter if she pees. I'm glad that other people have this problem to because yeah I started to feel like there was pee everywhere. Gross! But my dog is house broken and I also started wondering about urinary problems. So maybe she'll grow out of it. I hope so. Thanks for your question it helped me too!

We have a Jack Russell/Beagle mix and she use to do this every time someone came to our home. She is getting close to two years old, and now she only does this when my best friend and ex-husband come over. She doesn't do it with anyone else. Go figure! So, she's much better. It's just nervousness or excitement. Like everyone else suggested, just greet her outside or where there is no carpet. Getting her fixed is not going to help. We had Bailey fixed at 6 months old, and she still did it. It's probably not a urinary infection or accidents would happen at other times rather than just when she's excited to see you. On a side note, I use to have a Llasa Apso. She was my first dog and I had her for 15 years until she passed away. She was the best dog (aside from our current sweet Bailey, of course).

Natures miracle is seriously the best stuff on the market. and yes this is normal in little dogs you can't punish it out of them it will actually make it worse and fixing her won't help either it is a submissive thing and in the order of dog world it is acknowledging that you are the alpha. she will get better as she gets older but for now you have to find ways to deal with it let her out to greet you but than she might pee in the doorway or crate her and hope she pees in there first but really you just have to deal with it for a little while and as she gets older she will start feeling more permanant in the "pack" good luck

My husband works @ JonDon on Airport Way. (They are all about carpet cleaning, cleaners, chemicals etc.) You could go in to ask for a product... Tell them H. sent ya. I'll try to remember to ask Dave tomorrow for ya'.
The greeting the dog outside sounds like a good idea. Maybe 99 times to late though, huh? :) Sorry... my dog is 9 yrs old. I guess I've forgotten about those puppy days. -H.

**I found out... it's called UPS (Urine PreSpray) You spary it on prior to doing a cleaning. He said that is what he uses but that there are several different brands @ the store etc. If you are concerned about all natural etc. They have a great selection & informed staff that know the products well. :) Good Luck!
