Hi,
I was bending forward Monday night putting my daughter on here swing outside when she let go and all her weight pulled down on my arms and went straight to a muscle in my back (in the right side middle of my back). I felt like Oooh. But Tues. night it has become REALLY sore. When I went to lift the cereal box this morning (wed.) I couldnt. When I get in the "right" position it REALLY hurts. Should I go to a doctor? I am hoping it will just get better and go away :) Do things like this just go away?? I have NEVER had this type of "injury" before? I am 43 yrs old. Thank you for anyone who know anything.
K.

Good Luck,

Epsom salt is great for this sort of thing when soaking in the tub. It will remove a lot of the soreness and swelling if it is just a pulled muscle. Epsom salt can also be used to relieve the pain and swelling from bruising and twisted ankles. There is also something called Bath Therapy that helps relieve tense muscles.

I had a sudden "pull" on my right arm when I was 45. The pain was uncomfortable for about 4 days and went away...and then just came and went (too short to make appointment and still have symptoms) for a while. Then my daughter came in my bed in the night and her head leaned against my head for the next 4-6 hours. I couldn't get rid of the pain!!! All of the above were related to the same problem. The pain was still there and uncomfortable around lunch so I made an appointment to my general practicioner (Dr.) and the earliest they could see me was the next am. I didn't sleep all night (yes, I took an antiinflammatory with not much affect. Tylenol helped about an hour.
Long and short: alot of discomfort over 2 months and I see a doctor. He figures it out, sends me to a specialist, he shows me my two herniated discs in my neck and sends me to physical therapy. I follow the therapist through the exercises for four months and I am using the RIGHT muscles to walk, stand, I can run without running out of breath for the first time since I was 32! and no knee pain, no other pain, I can stand for an hour and I am not in pain( I used to have a 2 minute limit. I can not do some things, they will aggravate my hernias, but the quaLITY OF MY LIFE has improved. Go see a doctor you trust. If there isn't one, how about a P.A.? If not, go to a friend's doctor you might trust. Then take care of yourself.

OUCH! Been there, done that...but in my neck. Yes, go see your doc. It will get better, but they can give you medicine and some exercises to help you get going. Mine is recurrent, so I now keep a supply of muscle relaxers (Skelaxin is my favorite...doesn't make me loopy), Motrin 800, and Prednisone (if it gets really bad) on hand. Physical therapy was very helpful too. Don't ignore it! Back pains/injuries have a tendency to recur.

Hi K.,

Use Ice and Motrin on a regular basis. To me (as a personal trainer) it sounds like a muscle pull. If it doesn't get better after a few days of ice and motrin go see your doctor. Muscle pulls can take several days to weeks to heal. Good Luck.

Hello K.

You should definitely go to the doctor. You just want to make sure that all you have is a "pulled muscle". Have you tried to put heat on the muscle? If not, you may want to try that. The heat may help with some of the pain.

I know exactly what you mean....I have the same problem only its my chest muscle on my left side. I think it was from carrying the car seat with my son in it who at the time was 5 months and 20 pounds...It got to the point where I could not move my left arm because of it. This lasted 4 weeks and I even went to the doctor and they said that It will eventually go away it was just a pulled muscle. Now I am trying to do mommy and me exercises so that I can stay in shape and not have this happen again.

I would get to a good massage therapist right away and a chiropractor. I have a FABULOUS massage therapist, she's in VB near Mt. Trashmore, if that would work for you email me at ____@____.com and I will give you her info. I also have a great chiropractor but she has waiting list a year long. In the mean time you could use some Arnica, its a homeopathic remedy for sore muscles, works wonders. Good luck!

You should go to the doctor and get some relief! The best "cocktail" for a pulled muscle is valium and vicoden. Not pushing drugs, but I've pulled muscles in my back before and out of everything I've been given, that worked the best! Don't stay in pain. And, used ice or heat, which ever feels better for you.
Hope you feel better soon!

I have been dealing with a similar situation since Feb 3. My diagnosis was a pinched nerve in my neck. I have pain that goes down my right arm and in the beginning I could not lift any thing with that arm. It can be so painful at times. I have a 24 lb, 15 month old son and lifting him causes the problem to be worse at times. I would suggest seeing a doctor. If it is a pinched nerve there is not much than can be done except for pain management. I take an anti-infamitory and muscle relaxers each day and if the pain is really bad the doctor has given me some pain medication. I have also been going to physcial therapy twice a week. A massage therapist or a chiropractor may also help, but I would seek the advice of a doctor first. Good luck. If you have any other questions, feel free to email me.

hi K.-I unfortunately have done this same type of thing numerous times. It can be extremely painful! And who has time for that? Your best bet now is to ice the area once an hour for about 15 minutes. I know this is a lot so try at least a few times a day..more is better though.Get some Advil(the liqui-gels are the best) take 4 every six hours..if they don't bother your stomach. If it continues to get worse of course call your doc.

Most pulls and strains in the mid-back are caused from weakness in the lower back and core/ab muscles. If you are working your abs make sure you are also working your lower back and streching...yoga is great for prevention!

I used to be a personal trainer...now have an 8 week old..I need to take my own advice about the core work!

Hope this helps.. Take care of yourself! Let me know-J.

as a massage therapist, to me it sounds like a pulled muscle. i am not a doctor and can't diagnose, bu want to let you know, if there is injury, know that there are hundreds of nerves that go into your spine, which could effect your arms legs and wherever. (get it checked to be on the safe side, because you mentioning you couldnt lift a cereal box could possibly mean there could have been nerve damage (especially if pain is radiating down your arm. i am not a doctor, but do suggest to be on the safe side and get it checked out. i hope its nothing more than a pulled muscle, but you never know, only the doctors can tell you whts going on.

Also, use an ice pack. When you pull a muscle it also inflames it. Ice versus heat will help and do it for no more than 20 minutes. You can buy the packs that are gel filled and flat. Keep one in your freezer and puul it out when needed. In the mean time use frozen peas.

Hi, back strains can be very hard to heal, I know this because I have a "bad back." If I were you I would start with Motrin 800mg twice a day and a heating pad in the evening. If your back doesn't feel better within the next week you should go to your Primary Physician to be evaluated.
I hope you feel better soon K.!

It sounds like you have pulled a muscle in your back. I did the same thing just opening a window! It will eventually go away but the doctor can give you something to tolerate the pain until then. I was given skelaxin and ibuprophen, it made a big difference and I'm glad I went!

I agree with Olivia C. I'm another massage therapist, and if you'd called me up for an appointment, I'd send you to a doctor first. Icing your back for 15 minutes at a time, and/or taking an over-the-counter pain reliever, can help you cope until you get to the doctor's office, but you want to have a medical professional rule out more serious injuries. I know it's hard to believe that you could've injured yourself seriously just by holding your daughter, but this is your back that has to support you for many more years; you don't want to ignore it or try a treatment that will make it worse instead of better. Then once the doctor has given the OK, a weekly massage for the next 4 weeks or so should get you back into good health.

Sounds like an injury that could be helped by chiropractic. Try it. A good chiropractor will give you x-rays and see what is going on with your back. Good luck.

Dear K.,
I'd get in to see a doctor just to be sure it's just a pulled muscle. I'm a 62 year old very active woman who has also pulled a muscle while bending over to put on my pajamas one night. I found that alternating hot and cold compresses helped. The lifesaver for me was Shaklee Physique. It's an all natural sports drink formulated especially for muscle recovery AND IT WORKS. Here's my website link: http://www.shaklee.net/lolahilton. Follow this path to find the product that US Olympic teams use for muscle recovery:
Once you get on the page, on the left side you'll see NUTRITION, follow the path to SPORTS NUTRITION, PRODUCTS FOR SPECIFIC NEEDS, and you'll see Shaklee Physique for Muscle Recovery. No kidding, the product is very good for you and is 100% money back guaranteed. If I can help you more, please call me on my cell phone (it's on my website). Warm regards, L. H

Oh, I've done this! If you can't even pick up a cereal box, then yes I'd definitely recommend going to the Dr. - see if your GP or someone you know can give you the name of a good Chiropractor. In the mean time, I'll tell you what mine told me - never put heat on a muscle injury, always ice it - ice on for 20 minutes, off for 20 minutes, for as much of the day as you can with a little one running around. Take ibuprofen, and make the appointment asap. I hope you feel better soon!

I'd go to a dr a chiropractor or to get a massage. If you go to the dr, they will knock you out. They'll give you pain killers and a muscle relaxer. If you go to a Chiropractor or to get a massage, you will have to go back several times this week. But it is a lot better than being in a fog.

any time you have a sore back and can't lift simple objects, you should go see your doctor, because one small pain can become one big problem. (not to scare you, but) my cousin had a sore back (just a twinge) but woke up one day a couple days after he injured his back he couldn't walk. He had to go in and have emergency surgery on a herniated disk in his back, so...just a thought. You don't want a little problem to become something that requires surgery.

try soaking in some EPSON salt bath you might have a pulled muscle and from experience you need to keep your back and abdomen muscles strong they work together if it doesn't get better inthe next few days go see a doctor. I have also had acupuncture done and it does miracles and I can't stand needles. I am 42 and I feel in pretty good shape and health but I make sure I try to exercise with something at least a couple times a week. and I don't eat fastfood (rarely)

Try a chiropractor. I had my husband go when he had a similar problem and now he does not think I am crazy for going anymore. It may take a couple of times but it can help.

Mind Over Back Pain (John Sarno) is also a good book.

K., go to webMD for advice. Rest, heat, ice, and lots of different rubs work. May need to use a pain killer like acetaminophen too. It should stop hurting after a few days if it is a pulled muscle. For your own peace of mind, you may want to call your doctor's office and speak with the nurse who can advise you rather than make an appt. right away. I have had many pulled muscles. Sometimes I barely move and they pull. It's because I don't exercise every day.

I would suggest some exercises in the morning to warm up your muscles since you have a young child. Don't exercise that back muscle until it has healed unless the nurse says it's ok. Regardless, if it hurts at any time, stop what you are doing and rest it. If she is old enough to get into the swing, etc., with just a little help from you, then let her do these things for herself. Otherwise, do "core" exercises to strengthen your abs because those are the muscles that really protect your back. I have a very bad back but since I went to a Physical Therapist last year, it has been much better. I learned exercises to strengthen my "core" and how to walk properly up and down stairs. Now my back is much, much better.

There are some good "ice" products available at drug stores. I bought one large enough to cover my lower back. It stays very cold, I keep it in the freezer so it's always ready.

I hope this helps and that you will soon be feeling better.

I would advise you to talk to your doctor's nurse. If you're in pain, you may need to get it looked at, or she/he may have some helpful ideas for you.

In the meantime, check to see if you have some inflamation. If it's tender to the touch, you probably do. Try an ice compress for 5-10 on and off. That's usually what it takes to alleviate inflamation and pain till you see the doctor.

Hope you feel better soon.
