My husband and I have a wonderful 2 year old son. We had been trying to get pregnant for our second for about a year with no success. My doctor had tested my progesterone at day 23 during my cycle and one month determined it was low and asked me to test again. If nothing happened the next month, she would start me on Clomid. Well, that month I got pregnant without any medical help. My progesterone was tested at 11.2 but my doctor wanted me to start progesterone suppositories for the first trimester. That is where I am now--I am getting them filled tomorrow. I am a little nervous as i have never heard of anyone using these. I would welcome any advice or experience anyone might have with these. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I want to thank all of you for easing my fears on using the progesterone. I have started using the suppositories and they are really no big deal, a little messy. It was hearing all of your experiences though that made me the most comforable. I am still very early pregnant but feeling yuckier by the day, which I think is a good sign!

They will probably have you use them at night. They are messy, so use a pantyliner, and try not to cough or have to get up after putting it in! :) They melt pretty quickly though and are so worth it if they can help you get pregnant! Good luck.

I used them after 2 miscarriages and it resulted in a full term pregnancy. I had to use at night (which was not a huge deal, but then in the morning as well, which required me to plan for an extra 20 mins in bed--I'm not usually up a lot earlier than I have to be!
But I did use them. My doc explained that the embryo with my two miscarriages were not implanting properly and this helped with that. Good luck and they're just a minor inconvenience.

I had to be on progesterone oral medicine with both of my pregnancies. I had to take them until 13 weeks. I was also nervouss about taking them but the doctor said since my progesterone was so low I need to get more so that is why I had to take them. I am happy to say I have 2 beautiful and healthy boy and girl. Good luck.

Hi T.,
Congratulations on your pregnancy. I was on these for my first trimester. They were a little uncomfortable and messy but otherwise fine. Good luck!

Hello! I had to use progesterone suppositories when I got pregnant. It took us a very long time to get pregnant and so when I did my prog. level was low so my doctor put me on that right away. We were very careful because of being afraid of having a miscarriage. I was only on it for the first trimester. I was very confident in my doctors. Now we have a beautiful little girl - a true miracle!

Wishing you the best....keep us posted!

I had low progesterone with my last baby and was on oral progesterone. I would think it is similar only a different way of taking it. The baby is now a healthy, crawling amazing, 8 month old, little girl who is a huge blessing. (right this minute she is grouching though!!!!) Congratulations! A.

I had to use them starting at 16 weeks in my last pregnancy. I used them right before I went to bed but it was messy the next day so pantyliners are a must. But they helped keep my contractions at bay and I made it to 37 weeks! Yeah me!

In one of my pregnancies, my progesterone was low and I took suppositories. Unfortunately, I miscarried at 10 weeks. (I went on to get pregnant w/ twins a few weeks later!)
There are basically two reasons progesterone could be low. First, because the pregnancy isn't progressing well (as in my case) and my body was getting ready to miscarry. In that case, progesterone suppositories would not help. There was something genetically wrong with the fetus (we learned after testing) and giving progesterone would not have changed that. Second, some women don't produce enough progesterone to sustain a pregnancy. If you are in that category, the progesterone could help.

Good luck and I wish an uneventful nine months for you!

I used them after getting pregnant with invitro. They aren't as gross as they sound. Maybe it's because we had already been thorugh so many "unnatural" things trying to get pregnant, but I don't remember anything negative about them. That was 7.5 years ago though.
It seems like it was more like a gel pill that you just insert. Some of it might have come out kind of like discharge but like I said, I don't remember anything really horrible about them.
Good luck!!! and Congrats!

I had to use them for both my pregnancies. Basically as I understand it is that some women just don't produce enough progesterone and progesterone helps maintain the pregnancy so if your Dr recommends it, it can't hurt and could be the difference between a successful pregnancy or a miscarriage. They are very easy to use and you will most likely only need to use them for a little while until your progesterone levels are good. Good luck and congrats on your pregnancy!

My cousin was having a little trouble getting pregnant, so after a HORRIBLE experience with Clomid and still no pregnancy, they were going to start talking about IVF when poof! She got pregnant on her own like you.
She did the progesterone suppositories for the first trimester and now shes about to give birth to a beautiful baby boy.
It's not for everyone, and sometimes I think docs want you to take them when you don't need to. The suppositories are for women with repeat miscarriages who have trouble carrying the baby to term because of low progesterone counts.
I'd do a lot research and ask your doc more questions before you start the suppository.
Good luck, and congrats on the pregnancy! :)

Hi T.,
The Progesterone suppositories during first trimester helps keep progesterone at the correct level until the placenta is big enough to handle progesterone production on its own and decrease the possibility of miscarriage from low progesterone.
My MD put me on Progeseterone before I got pregnant because my levels were to low for a pregnancy. I took them from date of ovulation until the end of the cycle for several cycles while on Clomid. Once pregnant I took them until week 13. Since I was taking it before pregnancy he gave me a choice of oral or suppositories, I chose oral and it worked well. Seems to me that he said if I was already pregnant he would've prescribed suppositories. My daughter is 2 1/2 years old.
A friend of mine was found to have low progesterone during a pregnancy after she had already had 2 miscarriages so her MD put her on Progesterone suppositories. She carried to term, baby is 3 weeks old.
I understand your nervousness, hopefully hearing our experiences will be helpful. Congratulations on your second baby.

the progesterone helps support the pregnancy until the placenta starts making progesterone at 10 or 11 weeks.. I took progestone pills (oral) for the first trimester. It made me tired.. but it is hard to tell how tired I was cause I was pregnant or from the pill.

there is no known risk to the child as it is exactly the same as naturaly occuring progesterone.

my child was born totally normal without birth defects.

i was nervous about using it also, but am so glad i did. if i didn't use it, the doctor told me i would have had a miscarriage. once you are out of the first trimester, you don't need to use it anymore. good luck.

Hi T.,
I also was very nervous. I got preg and had very low prog. I started bleeding a lot and my doc suggested them. I miscarried at 8 weeks though. There was prob a genetic defect I believe. As far as the suppositories, they were not bad at all. My doc told me they make the lining nice and thick. Good luck and I wish you a healthy pregnancy.
