I am a little over 9 weeks right now but had a m/c last year so my Dr. has been doing a lot of blood tests on me. At 7wks my progesterone levels were at a 17, at 8wks down to 14 so I was put on Prometrium. at 9wks levels were at 12. I am still in the normal range but at the lower end. I am wondering if anyone out there has had the same issues but was able to get the levels back up and carry until term with a healthy baby. thanks

What can I do next?

It depends on the Dr. For both my pregnancies I was with a fertility specialist who was extra cautious about everything. She preferred the progesterone level to be above 20. My first pregnancy she had me on progesterone suppositories 2x daily for the first 13 weeks. For this second preganancy for some reason the number kept dropping, etc. and she put me on 1x daily progesterone injections. I started to get close to dropping below again and asked what would happen then and she said they would put me on 2x daily injections, thankfully I never I had to do that. At around 13 weeks she took me off and we are crusing along at 25 weeks. Good luck!

I had the same thing took the same thing prometrium for the first trimester and delivered a healthy 8lb 9oz baby girl 2yrs ago. Pregnant again and on the prometrium again. Some women just have a low level of progesterone. Don't worry all will be fine.

Hi H.,

I had the same issue and took a supplement. Our baby is totally healthy - over 2 years old now !

My one word of advice - the doc advised us to take the supplement but did not suggest a stop date for taking it. So it turns out I took it for a few days longer than necessary - and bought an expensive new bottle to do that, so maybe check in frequently about when to stop taking !

Thanks !

I agree that it might depend on the doctor. Our doctor is pro-life all the way and he will do what it takes to bring any pregnancy to term. I also know someone who had been on progesterone supplements initially twice a week since being pregnant at 6 weeks then the dosage was tapered to once a week until her placenta was able to nourish the baby on its own. What a blessing, they now have a healthy baby :)

H.,
I have the same issues. You need to request that your doctor put you on vaginal suppositories of progesterone immediately. I've done much research and this method seems to be the most effective way of getting the progesterone levels to rise. I have lost 3 babies due to a progesterone deficiency, BUT, I have 2 healthy children I carried to term, only one of those pregnancies needed progesterone treatment.
IF your doctor isn't willing to try this out, FIND ANOTHER ONE. I see Dr. Mary O'Toole at Orange Coast Women's Medical Group in Mission Viejo. Any of the doctors there are great and would be willing to try this with you. I had a doctor last summer who wasn't willing to try and I lost the baby.
Keep in mind that there are no guarantees, but giving all therapies a shot is your best bet.
Good Luck!!

There are progesterone creams rubbed on the belly that will not affect the amount of progesterone your own body produces. I too had progesterone issues (still do) but use the cream to stabilize my numbers.

Prescription progesterone affects the amount of progesterone your adrenals produce, but still, if you must have it to sustain the pregnancy, then you have to do what you have to do.
