Probiotics...during Or After Antibiotics?

Hi moms,
I am currently on an antibiotic for bronchitis and I fully expect to have a yeast infection afterward, as that seems to be the pattern for me. I give my kids probiotics daily and I take them as needed but now I think I've read that if you take them during antibiotics, the antibiotics cancel them out so it's basically wasted. Is that true? Does anyone have experience with this? Should I wait till I'm done with the meds and then take the probiotics or start taking them now?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you, ladies! After reading all the responses, particularly the horror stories, you ladies are absolutely right. I am taking probiotics now and will continue to take them each and every day. Thank you for that important reminder and taking the time to respond!

I would start now. When my son was prescribed an antibiotic they told us to start them right away in case it caused diarrhea. (It never did.)

You just have to time the taking of the pro-biotic with the anti-biotic. Which I think is very hard to do...So depending upon the frequency of your antibiotic, take your pro-biotic 2-4 hours after, but at least 1-2 hours before the next antibiotic. Then take lots after you finish the course of antibiotics.

Sorry you have bronchitis.

START RIGHT AWAY! My daughter got a C. Difficile infection from a course of antibiotics because all of the "good" flora in her stomach was killed off along with the bad (this was a very strong antibiotic). It went undiagnosed for months and she had diarhea the whole time. She lost several pounds (she was 3 years old and several pounds was a significant portion of her body weight) and the GI doc said she was malnourished because she could not maintain her weight. Once they figured out what it was, they told us to start probiotics right away and gave her a different course of antibiotics to fight the C. Diff infection. She eventually got better, but that was a very scary time for us. She was wasting away and nobody could tell me why! They even thought she had Celiac Disease for awhile and put her under anesthesia to do an endoscopy. The whole thing was horrible. I am now a BIG believer in probioitics and even if the antibiotics cancel it out, at least you're staying ahead of the game, so to speak.

Hi! Antibiotics get rid of the "good and bad" flora where taking the probiotics will keep the good flora in the intestine. Same as yogurt. When you take the probiotics you have decreased GI symptoms (bloating, gas) and yeast infections. Take them at the same time.

ALL THE TIME!! For another horror story- a family friend of ours went on an antibiotic but it killed EVERYTHING and some complications happened and now she has 90% of her bowels removed and has those poop bags that will be with her for quite awhile. Her doctor said that if she had yogurt or probiotic she wouldn't of had that happen. With all of my son's ear infections and antibiotic I shovel the yogurt and give him his probiotic.

I have heard mixed reviews on when to start pro-biotics when on abx. I would take them at least 3-4 hours time between the abx while on them and then for at least a month after you have finished the abx. If you are taking them at the same time the pro-biotics will have no value.

Hope this helps, hope you get to feeling better.

Start eating yogurt daily, if not twice daily, while on the antibiotics. That should be enough to fend off the yeast infection.

We have always used Pro-biotics during the course of an antibiotic treatment. You can eat yogurt more frequently or use the over the counter "Pearls". We have always had good results and we used the Probiotics with our little boy EVERYTIME he is on any kind of medicine.

Hope this helps!

During and after. I don't understand your comment about taking them when you need them. Your body always needs them. Our current life style hampers our body's defenses. Probiotics is one way to assist our body keep well.

My son has to take probiotic/antibiotic combos very frequently. We take them together but not at the same time during the day. If he's taking the antibiotics three times a day, then I give him the probiotic either with his midmorning or midafternoon snack. My MD suggests that if you take them together at the same time in the day, then they will cancel each other out but not if taken at different times during the day.

some docs give diflucan with antibiotics for that very reason. Take the probiotics a few hours away from the anti-biotics.
