We are trying to really cut back on our expenses. We have to keep home phone service, but our monthly bill is outrageous. We are looking at Vonage. Anyone have any good or bad experiences to share? What do you like and dislike? Anyone done the extension with a cellphone? My hubby has an old iphone that isn't hooked up (as a phone). Would we be able to add it as an extension? Our internet connection is in a room where we would have difficulty setting up a phone. We use wireless for the computer which is now in a different room). Is there any easy way around that (other than the rewiring thing mentioned on their website)? Thanks for any info.!

What can I do next?

Have not had a land line for 6 years. All cell phone and google talk or skype. Long Distance and Conference calling is normally always through Skype or MSN live. Not bad, I save so much more on this.

Overseas is always Skype, unless in emergency then we get a overseas calling card. Skype is like cents for minutes. Instead of dollars and tons of hidden fee's

I have Vonage and the only time I have no phone service is when the DSL is down and yes, of course , when the power is out. It is has happend maybe 3 times so far and it was only for a short time. Vonage runs on your high speed internet connection and will work even when the computer is out. There is a great FAQ page on the Vonage homepage and it answeres just about any question you might have. I was impressed by the speed I had my little box in the mail. I ordered the service on a Saturday afternoon and Monday morning FedEx droped off the selfinstall kit. On the Account page there are services and extentions you can add on and turn on and off to your needs. It is all very easy and less expensice than a landline. I hope this helps.

I hung on to a land line forever even though it was expensive because I wanted to keep my phone number. When I found out you can keep your land line number with Vonage I had the land line disconected.

It serves its purpose but you will lose phone service if the power goes out. I have a cell phone if someone needs to reach me. I keep a cell phone charger every where, work, car and home, just in case. The change saves me $85 a month so it is worth it.

My neighbor has Vonage. Whenever the power is out they lose phone service. If there is no power to your computer, then Vonage doesn't work.

Hey -
I did the same thing you are doing right now and had Vonage for a while. Personally, I did not like it. I could hear fine through the receiver, but my friends and family all complained that they could barely hear me and that there was some kind of noise on the line.

Now, I just have my cell phone and just a separate Panasonic phone which uses blue tooth to sync to my cell phone. So, I have two receivers at the house (one in my room and one in the kitchen). It is synced to two cell phones, so if one of those two cell phones is in the house, that phone will work as well. If one of those two cell phones is not in the house, then it doesn't work. But, the calls go to our cell phones. So, we are fine with it.

The only reason that I wanted to keep a land line was to insure that a phone was accessible when we had a babysitter. But, now, ALL the babysitters show up with their own cell phone. Plus, we leave one of our cell phones at the house when the babysitter comes so that the house phone does work.

Oh, and you don't lose service when the power goes out - which was one of my beefs with Vonage.

I used to use vonage all the time as my work phone and only switched to at&t because we got a better deal when we packaged through them for digital phone. The ONLY issue I had was when I was doing a really really large file download for work and it would muck up the phone connection until the download was done. I'm not talking downloading a music file - i was transferring 100s of megs of files for work over the network....so if you don't do that then Vonage would probably be great. I do have to say I didn't have telemarketers calling me on Vonage, like I do on my at&t phone service. I definitely would recommend them.

I'm not sure how you would hook up an old cell phone to use them. I hooked up their box to my router and used a land line type phone.

They also had excellent customer service.

My hubby has two lines with Vonage. He works from home and has conference calls a lot. He has not had any problems with them and he can take the lines with him when he visits his daughter in PA.

I've had Vonage for a few years and have been very happy with it. Every now and then (once a year?) it will be glitchy and I'll have trouble hearing someone or they'll have trouble hearing me. We bought a cordless phone that comes with 3 handsets...only 1 has a phone jack which plugs into the vonage device, the other 2 just plug into a power outlet, so we're able to have phones throughout the house. We mainly got it because all of our family is in another state. It's nice to be able to call them without the long distance fees and we were able to give them a local number that they can call and then dial our number so they don't have to pay long distance fees either.

We have vonage and I don't really have any complaints. Sometimes the phone rings and no one is there, but that hasn't happened in awhile. We also have cell phones in case of a power outage.

We have had vonage for about 5 yrs and it's great. We very seldom have outages so haven't had a problem with that, but we do have cell phones for back up. Ours runs off our wireless which is in our basement, not sure about the wiring aspect.

We've had Vontage for years and love it. We have a base unit with extra extensions around the house. You might be able to do this so you don't have to do the extra wiring. We also have ours set up so if for some reason the internet goes down it automatically rolls over to our cell phones. We've had no problems and it saves a ton of money.
