Private Kindergarten

I am looking for a private kindergarten that is not particularly for special needs kids, but not for mainstream kids either. My daughter will be entering kindergarten in the fall. If she goes to the public school in our area she will be in regular kindergarten and the pulled out twice a week for speech therapy.
I am wondering if there are any private schools that cater to kids with delays. I have found some that deal with learing differences (adhd/add) but not with developmental delays (speech/physical)

Any suggestions?

I would look into Shelton. I am sending my son there for summer school. They have an excellent program.

Hi Ashley,

I don't know what is leading you towards private school. If it just the fact she will be pulled out for therapy, I would ask the school how many others will be too - I think you'll be surprised about the number. I also have the name of a private therpaist who will come to your home, if you're interested (I found much faster prgress with her than through the schools - you just have to pay for it!)

My son attended a Primrose School and I do know that there were several students there who were in speech therapy. Primrose teachers are more qualified than those you would find at other schools and the curriculum is one of the best in the area. My son attended the Primrose School of Breckinridge Park in Richardson (Renner & North Star), but you can visit www.primroseschools.com for a campus nearest you. Good luck!

If I understand you correctly, you are seeking a private school for mainstream kids that also take kids with special needs. Unfortunately, to be best of my knowledge, what you are looking for does not exist. At least not anywhere around here. I also have a 7 year old daughter with developmental delays and although I was able to find a private day care and preschool that had an inclusive environment, I was not able to find a private kindergarten or elementary school who would mainstream her into their school. Only private schools I could find that would accept her as a student were schools for kids with learning disabilities or mentally challenged. Although the concept is great, I guess families with typically developing kids who can afford private school don't want their kids to learn in the same environment as kids with special needs. Their concern might be that they are paying enough money for private school so they don't want the teacher's attention to be given mostly to the "special" kids. I have thought of placing her in a charter school but haven't looked into that yet to see if the school district's charter school even offers special education.

You might try the Shelton School or perhaps Oak Hill Academy. Althought these two schools are mostly made up of kids with ADD, ADHD, Dyslexia, other than that, they are typical kids with good social skills, etc. I would have loved for my daughter to be at Oak Hill or Shelton, but we could not afford it.

I will be anxious to here if you find anything.

Greetings,

As the mother of a child with DD I've searched the private school sector long and hard only to find that our needs are better met in the public school. There are not any "regular" private schools that offer speech therapy, but most will allow you to have your private therapist come in to the school. Another option regarding the public school is in your child's IEP for special ed. services for speech tell them you don't want pull-out services, that you want push-in services. Research by ASHA (America Speech and Hearing Association) shows that pull-out therapy is not as beneficial as push-in.

I know that the Prince of Peace Catholic school allows therapists to go in and they seem to be pretty supportive. My son's OT goes in there and does services and says it's a great place. Also, TLC Child Development center allows therapists to come in.

Let me know if i can help further.

Good luck

Have you looked at St. Timothy Academy? It is off of Coit and Legacy. (4550 Legacy) I am a speech language pathologist and have talked with St. Timothy about offering services for students at their school. Good luck!
