I was just wondering if anyone knows if you can be pregnant and have dental work done? I'm not pregnant yet, but plan to be soon. However, I have a tooth that chipped and I'm sure it needs to be looked at. Any thoughts?

What can I do next?

Hi L.,

I'd get it taken care of now and make sure that you don't allow them to put amalgam (the silver metals bound by very toxic mercury) in your mouth. I wouldn't wait until I was pregnant and I would avoid any dental work I could while pregnant and nursing... other than cleanings. Check out this website and see what you think: http://www.iaomt.org

Good luck with pregnancy!

You will want to make sure you take care of any dental work aside from cleanings prior to becoming pregnant. Oral hygiene is very important to a healthy pregnancy. Letting a dental problem go puts you at risk of an infection that can put you at a higher risk of preterm labor and or poor pregnancy outcome. Get to the dentist and get your tooth fixed before getting pregnant. You may also determine the cause for your chipped tooth and make sure you are not defficient in vitamins. All women of childbearing age should be taking a daily vitamin to make sure they are getting the folic acid they need to help promote a healthy pregnancy and prevent against birth defects. hope this helped.

I would say it all depends on what needs to be done. I had my teeth cleaned while pregnant. Only thing you cant have done while pregnant is get xrays. If worried I would say get the tooth done before you get pregnant, if possible.

Your teeth are one of the most important parts of your whole body! They are the watch place of all activity and if this is not taken care of immediately it can do serious damge to the rest of you, such as heart diease, diabetes, and not enough to say hurt your chances for a healthy baby. Take care of that tooth before it gets worse and sets decay into your body. Or letting it go could also make the rest of your teeth troubled-yes decay can spread and hurt your nerves eventually causing the lose of teeth. It also helps to take calcium and/or dring lots of milk. To make a healthy baby you must keep yourself healthy-Go for it girl!

I had a root canal done when I was 8 months pregnant. I was a mess worrying about it but in such extreme pain. I found a wonderful endodomist that was 'experienced' and had the right equiptment.
Whatever you can get done before your appointment though, I definitely would.
