Potty Training - Does Your Child "Hold It It"?

I started training my son (who will be 4 in July) on Saturday. When he woke up Sat morning I took off his diaper and said that I had no more and that it was time for big boy underwear. He went 3 times in his pants and then all of a sudden it was like it clicked and he went on the potty and has been accident free ever since. I am pretty amazed at how well it all went!! Then came Monday morning. He woke up dry and went on the potty right away. I took him to daycare and he did not go all day! Not on the potty or in his pants. So essentially 7:30am - 5pm. As soon as we got home he went. He did the same thing yesterday too. Part of me thinks that it is awesome that he can hold it but the other part of me is worried that he is holding it in. Has this ever happened to anyone else??

What can I do next?

My grand daughter seems to be able to hold it way too long too. She goes potty several times a day like normal, but then there are days she doesnt go after 4 or 5 in the afternoon, falls asleep, and sleeps all night and gets up the next morning dry and still doesnt need to go until 9 or 10am. Gosh I wish I could do that!

Women in the military were getting kidney infections from holding it too long. B/c when you are in the desert with a bunch of men, who wants to go behind the tank and squat in front of your co workers? So, they designed something called a Richard that allows them to pee standing up.

My point...is that it's not good to hold it for that long. The daycare needs to be taking him for potty breaks and perhaps giving him a sticker or some reinforcement for when he goes. Perhaps he is the most comfortable going at home and only wants to go there. My son did that with #2 which was hard when we'd be gone from home for a few days. It took a lot of talks to get him to know it's okay to poop in other people's toilets too. :-)

Good luck!!! And that's awesome that he is staying dry over night, my son still has night time accidents!!!

Well, it's not surprising that he trained right away, he is almost four and should be absolutely capable, not like when you train a toddler who just turned 2. If he's never used the toilet at daycare, he may not know what to do about it! He may not know if he should take himself, or ask to go, or even that he is supposed to. I would say that you and his daycare provider should talk to him together about using the bathroom at daycare, and the provider should remind him / take him to the bathroom every few hours til he's used to it. At about to turn four, I'd avoid the potty - that's meant for toddlers, he is old enough to stand and pee is in the real toilet. In a year, he'll be in kindy and there are not potties there. Both of my kids (one boy, one girl), trained right around their third birthdays using only the regular toilet.

He does hold it in sometimes but mostly knows when he has to go. I do not give him any drinks after 7:00 pm so he has enough time to go before bed and hopefully no accident. He has been doing this since 3 yrs old turning 4 in June. God Willing. :)

Yes, both of my kids will hold it FOREVER! My youngest doesn't go at preschool (3.5 hrs) either. So I think of it as normal but obviously not healthy...maybe set up some kind of reward system for not holding at daycare, enlist the teachers to help OR see if you can find out why he doesn't want to go there...some kids are hesitant to go in toliets not their own or just want privacy. The daycare I worked at in high school had a little kid bathroom with two toliets, two kids went at one time and a teacher stood at the open doorway ready to help if needed, I am sure some kids would be less likely to "go" with a set up like that.

Just ask the day care to have him sit on the potty a few times a day to give him the opportunity. My son goes a few times a day 3-5 times a day every few hours, what I think is normal.

My 4 year old daughter has bouts with holding her urine too. It gets frustrating at times. I have tried to explain to her the medical reasons why she shouldn't hold it. Her teacher and school nurse has also been working on this with us for about 4 months now.

I have no answer for you on how to fix it..other than make potty times before transitioning to different activities. Seems to be lessening the "need" to hold it.

I would be concerned too. I would think after awhile he could get an infection. It's a guy thing. I've had quite a few little boys in the daycare do this from time to time.

My baby turned 4 in march and she's been trained since december. She has never had a accident but even this morning I still have to remind her to go pee. She just doesn't think about it I guess? If we go out somewhere, she will hold it unless I make her go! Im so glad im not the only one!
