Potty Training Advice for the Mom of Three Year Old Daughter

My daughter is 3 (will be 4 in Jan.) and we wanted to enroll her in pre-school this fall. They won't accept her unless she is out of diapers. She wants to go to school (most of the time she says this) and uses the big potty every once in a while but not all of the time. Being wet or "dirty" doesn't seem to bother her. We try to encourage her (not pressure) and praise her (not overboard) but nothing really seems to matter!
Any and all suggestions would be appreciated. I don't really care if she misses out on school this year(she has plenty of time),I know she has the ability to do this. I need to know how to help her accomplish this and want to do it on a permanent basis.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you every one for your advice and suggestions! I'm happy to say we are going on day two of potty training. Emma's accomplishments so far way out weigh her accidents and she seems to be doing quite well so far. We are using pull ups at night only and hope to ditch those as soon as she gets the hang of it and can hold all through the night. Thanks again!

I have 2 boys, and although I hear boys are a lot easier, I still think that I may have some tips for you. Buy some big girl underwear, take her out and let her pick them out. Make a big deal of it. And just put her on the pot occasionally, like every 2 hours, I know it is a bit of an inconvenience, but it does help. And when they did go, I had m&m's in a container; 2 for peeing and 4 for pooping. And don't buy the little potty chair, get the foam one that sits on the big pot, that way she can't get off as easy. Hopefully these little suggestions help, I was able to get both of mine fully trained shortly before 2 years doing this.

Try to have her walk around without a diaper on, this seems to work because they can't hide when they have to go. So they come to you cause they don't know what to do, and thats when you show them. It usually takes about 2 or 3 days. Goodluck

Pay attention to when she normally goes and start having her sit on the potty at that time. Or 15 or 20 minutes after she drinks something. Just be consistent with it so it becomes a routine for her.

R.,
I had the exact same problem. My 3 1/2 year old had no interest in the potty. She liked getting new underwear and would go on the potty every once in a great while but then wouldn't do it for weeks later. I stopped trying. I didn't talk about it and then just three weeks ago on a Monday she decided she wanted to wear underwear and go on the potty. I kid you not from that day forward she has been in underwear with no accidents. It was like it had to be her choice to use the potty when she was ready. I was given that advice early on but didn't take it. So I guess the best advice I can give you is let her decide and she will do it when she is ready. My doctor said not to worry, we all get potty trained eventually! You never hear of a kid that never learns to go on the potty!
Hope this helps,
C.

Hi R.~
The only thing I can say is to echo Christine's advice...underwear. It's the only thing that worked for us. If we had him in a diaper or pullup he would use it, if we had him in underwear he would use the potty. We had tried everything else, even candy (which I swore I would never do) to no avail. I have heard some moms on here say to add food coloring to the potty for girls...that sounds like a harmless thing that just might work. Good luck and if you find a good idea, let us know...more potty training coming in about 1.5 yrs!!

Hi R.,
For my son there were 2 things that helped us. We gave him an m&m for each time he peed and 2 for pooping. Also I put him in underware and never went back. For awile I would have him in diapers and then would try underware then when he peed in them I put him back in pullups. I think I was confusing him. So when I put him in underware all the time he got it. It was a little messy for awile and I did alot of laundry but he finally did it. I don't know if that helps but good luck.
Chris
