Does anyone have any suggestions on how to train a three year old? He is ready cause he tells us when has dirty his diaper. I bought a toliet that sits on the floor. We just can't get him to use it. We have tired to put him in big boys underwear and it hasn't help. Does boys take longer then girls? My daughter took about 3 days to potty train. I am open to any suggestions. Thanks, S.

What can I do next?

For me personally I found something that the kids wanted to do like for my oldest it was dance class and then I told them that they had to be potty trained in order to take the class. I showed her that those were the teachers rules not mine. This put the potty training on my daughter. It wasn't something I was forcing her to do but something she needed to do in order to take dance class. For my middle child it was gymnastics. My son is only 5 months old so I haven't had to experience it with a son yet. But we used the same method when working in the daycare. If the kids wanted to move into the big kids room than they had to be potty trained. It worked with both the girls and the boys.

Good Luck

We just got done potty training my son and what worked for us was to reward him after he went to the bathroom we used little pieces of chocolate but anything your son really likes will work......I also had a poster board up in the bathroom that he got to put a sticker on everytime he went potty. My son was fairly easy but I have heard that boys take a great deal longer to train then girls.......hope I could help

Well in my case boys are extremely hard! My son is 4 and just before he turned 3 I only allowed him under ware during the day. At first he will still have lots and lots of accidents but as soon as he goes rush him to the potty. watch for signs that he has to go. I concentrated on pee first. I took my son about every hour to go potty setting a timer. After like 2 weeks he was going at least 1/2 the time on the potty so I then did a potty sticker chart which helped alot! By 3 we had the pee down pretty good but #2 took alot longer! It was a huge frustrting battle that took time and patience. By 3 1/2 he was potty trained with few accidents here and there. he is now 4 and rarely he has an accident! My daughter was easy also she is 2 1/2 and potty trained so there was a huge difference but she recently regressed to doing #2 in panties but is back on track now:) GOOD LUCK!!!

I wish I could give you the miracle answer...I am in a similar situation. My almost three year old has shown an interest in the potty since he was one, so we bought him a potty chair and a seat to go on the big potty. He started using them both but then slowly stopped. So now we are trying big boy underwear.
He has been doing pee in the potty standing up...still has several accidents a day, but he won't try to make it to the potty to go poop at all. We just started putting him in the big boy underwear this past weekend hoping it would help, but I am starting to think he is losing interest in his big boy underwear too.
We tried rewards and cheering for him but nothing seems to work with him consistently. I have heard boys take longer...but we have a newborn and after two years of this training business are really hoping something will work.
I'd like to send him to a summer program in July too, but he can't go if he's not fully potty trained. We have told him he can go if he stops going in his pants but I'm not sure he cares.
Any suggestions you get are appreciated.

I haven't potty trained a boy (yet), but what worked well for my 3 1/2 year old daughter was to watch her to see how often she went, and then put her on a schedule to try and potty. For example, she was wet every 45 minutes, so at about every 30 minutes, we sat on the potty. Pain in the butt - you bet, but that's what got us fully trained. My child also preferred the ring in the "big girl potty". You can get them with all kids of characters on them - ours was Sesame Street. Good luck!!

We have had similar troubles with my son who will be three in a couple weeks. He has known how to use the toilet for a while now...he would tell us when he was peeing, ask for privacy when he was pooping, etc...I don't really have a fast solution, except to say that we bought a seat that fits over our toilet and he prefers to use it over the one on the floor and might need more patience with your boy.

With our son, we have just tried not to push too hard, and let him set the pace. For the past six months I have asked him every morning if he wanted a diaper or underwear and he almost always chose diaper. This weekend he made huge strides after he and I talked about why he didn't want to wear underwear. He said he was scared he would pee in his underwear. After I reassured him that peeing in your underwear was nothing to be scared about as all you have to do is change it, he decided to wear underwear all weekend and was asking to go the bathroom. He did test out our response to the accidents a couple of times in the beginning. We were all smiles and just changed his pants. We even let him pack his own bag of extra clothes in case it happened when were out. I am sure he will probably have many more accidents, but he seems happy now to try to learn.
